Claims
- 1. A medical device for use with an implantable lead comprising:
- a connector cavity having an entrance end and a proximal end and adapted to receive a lead connector pin of said lead, said pin having an open end; and
- an electrically nonconducting elastomeric gasket located within said connector cavity and adapted to contact and seal the open end of the lead connector pin against fluid intrusion when the lead connector pin is residing within said connector cavity wherein said connector cavity has a lead connector pin electrical contact zone located between said entrance end and said proximal end, and wherein said gasket is located between said lead connector pin electrical contact zone and said proximal end without extending into said electrical contact zone when said lead is residing within said connector cavity.
- 2. The medical device of claim 1 wherein said gasket has a shape chosen from the group consisting of a flat-faced disk, a convex-faced disk, and a sphere.
- 3. The medical device of claim 1 wherein said gasket fixedly abuts said proximal end of said connector cavity.
- 4. The medical device of claim 1 wherein said connector cavity further includes circumferential sealing rings located within said connector cavity between said lead connector pin contact zone and said gasket.
- 5. The medical device of claim 2 wherein said electrically nonconducting elastomeric gasket comprises a material chosen from a group consisting of acrylonitrile butadiene, highly saturated nitrile, fluorocarbon, ethylene/propylene/diene terpolymer, styrene butadiene, chloroprene, isobutylene/isoprene (butyl), silicone rubber, fluorosilicone, polyacrylate, ethylene acrylic, chlorosulfonated polyethylene, chloropolyethylene, epichlorohydrin, natural or synthetic polyisoprene, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, and polybutadiene.
- 6. A medical device for use with an implantable lead comprising:
- a connector cavity having an entrance end and a proximal end and adapted to receive a lead connector pin of said lead, said pin having an open end; and
- an electrically nonconducting elastomeric gasket located within said connector cavity and adapted to contact and seal the open end of the lead connector pin against fluid intrusion when the lead connector pin is residing within said connector cavity, wherein said connector cavity has a lead connector pin electrical contact zone located between said entrance end and said proximal end, and wherein said gasket is located between said electrical contact zone and said proximal end without extending into said electrical contact zone when said lead is residing within said connector cavity; wherein said gasket comprises an interface material for contacting the open end of the lead connector pin and a bulk material located between said interface material and said proximal end.
- 7. The medical device of claim 6 wherein said bulk material has a higher elastic modulus than said interface material.
- 8. The medical device of claim 6 wherein said electrically nonconducting elastomeric gasket comprises a material chosen from a group consisting of acrylonitrile butadiene, highly saturated nitrile, fluorocarbon, ethylene/propylene/diene terpolymer, styrene butadiene, chloroprene, isobutylene/isoprene (butyl), silicone rubber, fluorosilicone, polyacrylate, ethylene acrylic, chlorosulfonated polyethylene, chloropolyethylene, epichlorohydrin, natural or synthetic polyisoprene, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, and polybutadiene.
- 9. A connector assembly comprising:
- a connector cavity having an entrance end, a proximal end, and a lead connector pin electrical contact zone located between said entrance end and said proximal end, and having an electrically nonconducting elastomeric sealing device located between said lead connector pin electrical contact zone and said proximal end without extending into said electrical contact zone; and
- a lead connector having a lead connector pin open end and residing within said connector cavity wherein said sealing device is in contact with said lead connector pin open end, thereby sealing said lead connector pin open end against fluid intrusion.
- 10. The connector assembly of claim 9 wherein said connector cavity is formed within a pulse generator header.
- 11. The connector assembly of claim 9 wherein said connector cavity is formed within a lead adaptor.
- 12. The connector assembly of claim 9 wherein said electrically nonconducting elastomeric sealing device comprises a material chosen from a group consisting of acrylonitrile butadiene, highly saturated nitrile, fluorocarbon, ethylene/propylene/diene terpolymer, styrene butadiene, chloroprene, isobutylene/isoprene (butyl), silicone rubber, fluorosilicone, polyacrylate, ethylene acrylic, chlorosulfonated polyethylene, chloropolyethylene, epichlorohydrin, natural or synthetic polyisoprene, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, and polybutadiene.
