Claims
- 1. A mold comprising:
a distortable boundary having a rim defining an interior region; a flexible membrane disposable against the rim and covering the interior region of the boundary; and a pressurizer for varying pressure on the membrane so as to distort the surface of the membrane, the boundary rim and the membrane cooperating to form a mold having a shape bounded by the membrane.
- 2. The mold of claim 1, wherein the pressurizer comprises a fluid in contact with the membrane and apparatus for altering a pressure of the fluid.
- 3. The mold of claim 1, wherein the fluid comprises a gas.
- 4. The mold of claim 1, further comprising:
a pressurizing chamber containing the boundary and being partly defined by the membrane, the chamber containing a pressurizing fluid to facilitate distortion of the membrane.
- 5. The mold of claim 1, further comprising:
a second boundary having a shape encompassing a portion of the interior region of the distortable boundary, the distortable boundary further bounding the shape of the membrane.
- 6. The mold of claim 1, further comprising:
a form having an exterior profile for use with the mold created by the boundary rim and the membrane.
- 7. A method of forming an article, the method comprising:
disposing a flexible membrane having a surface over a boundary having a distortable shape; selectively distorting the shape of the boundary; applying pressure to the membrane so as to distort the surface of the membrane; and forming the article on the membrane, the article having a shape dictated by the boundary rim and a depth profile dictated by the distorted membrane.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the pressure is negative.
- 9. The method of claim 7, wherein the pressure is positive.
- 10. The method of claim 7, wherein forming the article includes:
applying a polymer precursor on the surface of the membrane; and curing the precursor into a polymer.
- 11. The method of claim 7, wherein forming the article includes:
applying a curable material to the surface of the membrane, and curing the precursor.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the precursor is cured to form a glass.
- 13. The method of claim 7, wherein the distortable boundary has an interior region, the method further comprising:
disposing a mold edge on the surface of the membrane, wherein the mold edge has a circumferential shape encompassing at least a portion of the interior region of the distortable boundary.
- 14. The method of claim 7, further comprising:
applying a lens precursor to the surface of membrane; applying to the lens precursor a form having an exterior profile; and curing the precursor into a lens having opposed depth profiles dictated by the membrane and the form.
- 15. A molding apparatus, comprising:
a flexible membrane having a first surface; an adjustably distortable boundary abuttably placeable in contact with the flexible membrane; a pressurizer for variably applying pressure upon the first surface of the flexible membrane; wherein the flexible membrane is variably distortable by the pressurizer, and wherein distortion of the adjustably distortable boundary in cooperation with the flexible membrane bound a distortable portion of the flexible membrane.
- 16. The molding apparatus of claim 15, wherein the flexible membrane has a second surface oppositely disposed to the first surface, and wherein a formed item is formable upon the second surface of the flexible membrane.
- 17. The molding apparatus of claim 16, wherein the formed item is a lens.
- 18. The molding apparatus of claim 16, further comprising a mold edge abuttably placeable upon the second surface of the flexible membrane.
- 19. The molding apparatus of claim 18, wherein the mold edge includes an inlet port and an outlet port.
- 20. The molding apparatus of claim 18, wherein the formed item has at least one side, and wherein the mold edge forms the at least one side of the formed item.
- 21. The molding apparatus of claim 20, wherein the mold edge forms the formed item in a shape of a lens for a pair of glasses.
- 22. The molding apparatus of claim 18, wherein the mold edge has a cross-sectional shape that performs as a bellows in a first direction and has increased rigidity in a second direction.
- 23. The molding apparatus of claim 18, further comprising a second surface form abuttably placeable upon the mold edge.
- 24. The molding apparatus of claim 23, wherein the formed item has a first surface portion formed by the flexible membrane, and a second surface portion oppositely disposed the first surface portion.
- 25. The molding apparatus of claim 24, wherein the second surface portion of the formed item is formed by the second surface form.
- 26. The molding apparatus of claim 23, wherein the second surface form includes a surface variation.
- 27. The molding apparatus of claim 26, wherein the surface variation includes a convex protrusion.
- 28. The molding apparatus of claim 26, wherein the surface variation includes a concave depression.
- 29. The molding apparatus of claim 26, wherein the surface variation is usable to form a bifocal portion of the formed item.
- 30. The molding apparatus of claim 23, wherein the second surface form comprises a flexible membrane.
- 31. The molding apparatus of claim 30, wherein the second surface form flexible membrane is variably distortable.
- 32. The molding apparatus of claim 31, wherein the second surface form flexible membrane is variably distortable by the pressurizer.
- 33. The molding apparatus of claim 31, wherein the second surface form flexible membrane is variably distortable by a second surface form pressurizer.
- 34. The molding apparatus of claim 15, further comprising a second boundary abuttably placeable in contact with the flexible membrane.
- 35. The molding apparatus of claim 34, wherein the adjustably distortable boundary has a circumscribed portion, and wherein the second boundary is locatable within the circumscribed portion of the adjustably distortable boundary.
- 36. The molding apparatus of claim 15, further comprising a chamber enclosing the adjustably distortable boundary.
- 37. The molding apparatus of claim 36, wherein the flexible membrane forms one wall of the chamber.
- 38. The molding apparatus of claim 15, further comprising:
at least one adjusting mechanism for adjustably distorting the adjustably distortable boundary.
- 39. The molding apparatus of claim 38, wherein the adjustably distortable boundary includes at least one threaded opening, and wherein each of the at least one adjusting mechanism includes a threaded portion matable with a corresponding one of the at least one threaded opening of the adjustably distortable boundary.
- 40. The molding apparatus of claim 29, wherein each of the at least one adjusting mechanism is rotatable, and wherein rotation of each of the at least one adjusting mechanism produces stress distortion of the adjustably distortable boundary via the corresponding one of the at least one threaded opening of the adjustably distortable boundary.
- 41. The molding apparatus of claim 15, further comprising:
an emission device, wherein an emission by the emission device is directable through the flexible membrane.
- 42. The molding device of claim 41, wherein the emission device is a laser.
- 43. The molding apparatus of claim 42, further comprising:
an alignment guide, wherein the emission is directable through the alignment guide and the flexible membrane.
- 44. The molding apparatus of claim 43, further comprising:
a projection plane upon which the emission is directable so as to reflect a projection image thereon.
- 45. The molding apparatus of claim 44, wherein the projection plane has a calibration reference image placed thereon, the calibration reference image being superimposedly comparable to the projected image.
- 46. The molding apparatus of claim 41, wherein distortion of the flexible membrane by the pressurizer distorts the emission passing through the flexible membrane.
- 47. The molding apparatus of claim 15, further comprising:
a projection plane having a calibration reference image thereon, the calibration reference image being viewable through the flexible membrane.
- 48. The molding apparatus of claim 47, further comprising:
a device containing an image pattern situated such that the calibration reference image viewed through the flexible membrane is superimposedly viewable with the image pattern.
- 49. The molding apparatus of claim 48, wherein the device containing the image pattern comprises a reticle.
- 50. The molding apparatus of claim 47, wherein distortion of the flexible membrane by the pressurizer distorts the calibration reference image viewed through the flexible membrane.
- 51. The molding apparatus of claim 16, wherein the formed item comprises a curable material disposably placed on the second surface of the flexible membrane.
- 52. The molding apparatus of claim 51, wherein the curable material comprises a fluid.
- 53. The molding apparatus of claim 51, further comprising:
a curing device for curing the curable material.
- 54. The molding apparatus of claim 51, wherein the curing device emits ultraviolet light.
- 55. A method of forming a molded item using the apparatus of claim 15.
