Claims
- 1. An apparatus for compacting refuse, comprising:
a housing, said housing having an accommodation defined therein into which a receptacle for accumulating refuse can be located, said housing having a door by which refuse from outside the housing can be introduced into the receptacle, and a movable panel operable to permit the receptacle to be removed from said housing when full; a compression member mounted within said housing, said compression member being moveable to compress refuse collected in the receptacle; a drive enclosed within said housing, said drive being connected to move said compression member; an automatic control system mounted within said housing, said control system including a sensor mounted within said housing, said sensor being operable to gauge the level of refuse in the receptacle; said control system being connected to said drive; said drive and said compression member being operable by said control system to compact refuse in the receptacle activated in response to a signal from said sensor corresponding to a known height of refuse in the receptacle.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said apparatus has an inlet closure member operable to lock said door during operation of said compression member.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said apparatus includes the receptacle.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said compression member is moveable to an inactive position and said apparatus includes a proximity sensor connected to cause said inlet closure member to release when said compression member is in said inactive position and said proximity sensor senses an object near said inlet.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said control system senses resistive loading of said compression member by the refuse.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein operation of said compression member is constrained by any one of (a) a load limit; and (b) a displacement limit.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein operation of said compression member is constrained by a receptacle full limit condition and said apparatus has an signalling device for signalling to an operator that said receptacle full limit condition has been reached.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said apparatus includes a weight sensor mounted to gauge the amount of refuse in the receptacle and said “receptacle full” limit condition is signalled by said weight sensor.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 7 further comprising a load sensor for gauging the resistance opposing said drive and a sensor for gauging displacement of said compression member, and said “receptacle full” limit condition is determined as a function of signals received from said load sensor and from said sensor for gauging displacement of said compression member.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said compression member is moveable to engage and disengage the refuse, and said apparatus has a wiper mounted to discourage refuse from clinging to said compression member when said compression member is disengaged from the refuse.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said drive is free of hydraulic elements.
- 12. An apparatus for compacting refuse as claimed in claim 1 wherein
said drive includes a scissors mechanism having a pair of input legs extending from a common fulcrum, said input legs having input feet mounted to said structure, and a pair of output legs having output feet mounted to said compression member; one of said input feet is mounted to pivot about a first axis whose location is fixed
relative to said structure; and said compression member is constrained to move in a direction parallel to the bisector of the angle defined between said input legs.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein one of said output feet is constrained to pivot about a second axis whose location is fixed relative to said compression member, said first and second axis being parallel.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein one of said output feet is constrained to pivot about a second axis whose location is fixed relative to said compression member, said first and second axes being parallel and lying in a common plane parallel to said bisector.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein
said drive includes a scissors mechanism having a pair of input feet mounted to said structure and a pair of output feet mounted to said compression member; one of said input feet is constrained to pivot about a first axis whose location is fixed relative to said structure; the other of said inlet feet is constrained to follow a first linear path lying on a radius from said first axis; one of said output feet is constrained to pivot about a second axis, whose location is fixed relative to said compression member; the other of said output feet is constrained to follow a second linear path lying on a radius from said second axis; said first and second axes being parallel and lying in a common plane; said first and second paths being parallel; the others of said input and output feet both lying to the same side of said plane; and said paths being perpendicular to said plane.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein said drive comprises a pair of said scissors mechanisms mounted in parallel.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein:
the others of said output feet of said pair of parallel scissors mechanisms each has one of a pair of gears mounted thereto; said gears are mounted to a common shaft parallel to said second axis; and each of said gears is constrained to mesh with a linear rack mounted to said compression member.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein:
said drive further includes a motor, screw driven by said motor, and a yoke engaged to be moved by said screw; said yoke has a screw follower mounted to ride on said screw, a drag member connected to move the other of said input feet and a resilient member mounted to transmit motion between said screw follower and said drag member.
- 19. A method of compacting refuse in a refuse receptacle with a compression member, comprising the steps of:
gauging the level of refuse in the receptacle; sending a signal when the refuse is ready to be compressed; moving the compression member to compress the refuse in response to the signal; and governing the movement of the compression member according to the resistance presented by the refuse.
- 20. The method of claim 19 wherein said step of governing includes monitoring load feedback from said compression member.
- 21. The method of claim 20 wherein said step of monitoring load feedback includes monitoring the current of a motor driving said compression member.
- 22. The method of claim 19 wherein said step of moving includes extending the compression member on a compression stroke; and said step of governing includes ending said compression stroke in response to one of the conditions chosen from the set of conditions consisting of:
(a) a full stroke displacement limit condition; (b) a load limit condition; and (c) a receptacle full limit condition.
- 23. The method of claim 19 wherein said step of governing includes gauging the weight of refuse in said receptacle.
- 24. The method of claim 19 wherein said method includes the step of preventing more refuse from entering the receptacle when the compression member is in motion.
- 25. The method of claim 19 wherein the step of moving the compression member includes returning the compression member to an initial position.
- 26. The method of claim 25 wherein said step of returning includes cushioning the arrival in said initial position.
- 27. The method of claim 19 wherein the step of gauging includes the steps of waiting for refuse to be put in said receptacle.
- 28. The method of claim 27 wherein said step of waiting includes the steps of:
sensing for persons near said receptacle; and opening an accessway to permit refuse to enter the receptacle when persons are near said receptacle.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said drive includes an electric motor, said control system monitors motor current, and said control system operates to retract said compression member when resistance to compression causes the motor current to exceed a current limit value.
- 30. A waste collection apparatus comprising:
a housing having a chamber defined therein for accommodating a receptacle for accumulating waste; said housing having a door by which refuse from outside the housing can be introduced into the receptacle; a control system for said apparatus, said control system having an audio signal generating system operatively connected thereto; and said audio signal generating system being operable to emit an audio signal to a user of said apparatus.
- 31. The apparatus of claim 30 wherein said audio signal generating system is a voice system.
- 32. The apparatus of claim 30 wherein said control system is mounted to said housing.
- 33. The apparatus of claim 30 further including a sensor for detecting the level of waste collected in the receptacle, said level detecting sensor being operatively associated with said control system.
- 34. The apparatus of claim 33 further including a compression member for compacting waste collected in the receptacle, said control system being operable to actuate said compression member.
- 35. The apparatus of claim 34 wherein said control system initiates actuation of said compression member when said level detecting sensor is activated.
- 36. The apparatus of claim 35 wherein said door is moveable between open and closed positions; said control system being operable to maintain said door in said closed position when said level detecting sensor is activated.
- 37. The apparatus of claim 33 wherein said audio signal generating system is operatively associated with said level detecting sensor; and said audio signal generating system emitting an audio signal when said level detecting sensor is inoperative.
- 38. The apparatus of claim 30 wherein said door is moveable between open and closed positions; said control system being operable to urge said door to said open position.
- 39. The apparatus of claim 38 further including a proximity sensor for detecting a user, said proximity sensor being operatively associated with said door and said control system, said control system urging said door to said open position when said proximity sensor is activated.
- 40. The apparatus of claim 38 further including a compression member for compacting waste collected in the receptacle, said compression member being operatively associated with said control system; said compression member being inoperable when said proximity sensor is activated.
- 41. The apparatus of claim 30 further including a proximity sensor for detecting a user, said audio signal generating system being operatively associated with said proximity sensor, and said audio signal generating system emitting an audio signal when said proximity sensor is inoperative.
- 42. The apparatus of claim 30 further including a sensor for detecting the level of waste collected in the receptacle and a proximity sensor for detecting a user, each sensor being operatively associated with said audio signal generating system, said audio signal generating system emitting an audio signal when said proximity sensor and said level detecting sensor are activated simultaneously.
- 43. The apparatus of claim 42 further including a compression member for compacting waste collected in the receptacle, said control system being operable to actuate said compression member, said compression member being inoperable when said proximity sensor and said level detecting sensor are activated simultaneously.
- 44. The apparatus of claim 43 wherein said door is moveable between open and closed positions; said control system being operable to maintain said door in said closed position when said proximity sensor and said level detecting sensor are activated simultaneously.
