Claims
- 1. A socket for an electronic package, comprising:a cover and base housing slidably engaging one another and moveable between open and closed positions along a first axis; a cam assembly slidably received within a pocket in the base housing, said cam assembly being movable along a second axis at a non-parallel angle to said first axis; and a lever rotatably mounted in said base housing and engaging said cam assembly, said lever driving said cam assembly between first and second positions along said second axis when said lever is rotated about a rotational axis parallel to said first axis, said cam assembly engaging said cover to drive the cover in a direction parallel to said first axis between open and closed positions.
- 2. The socket of claim 1, wherein the cam assembly transfers rotary motion of the lever about said rotational axis to linear motion along said first axis.
- 3. The socket of claim 1, wherein said cam assembly includes at least one pusher bar mounted thereon, said pusher bar slidably engaging the cover to drive the cover between open and closed positions.
- 4. The socket of claim 1, wherein said cam assembly includes a plurality of pusher bars and the cover includes an equal plurality of slots slidably receiving said pusher bars, said pusher bars and slots aligning at a non-parallel angle to said first axis such that movement of said cam assembly along said second axis drives the cover along said first axis, said second axis being perpendicular to said first axis.
- 5. The socket of claim 1, wherein said pocket is located near a rear end of the base housing, said pocket including tracks along opposite sides thereof, said cam assembly being slidably received in said tracks and movable within said tracks laterally from one side to another side of the base housing.
- 6. The socket of claim 1, wherein said lever further includes a handle and a leg, said leg including an offset cam journal movable along an arcuate path when said handle is rotated about a rotational axis of the lever, said cam journal engaging said cam assembly to cause the cover to open and close when said handle is rotated.
- 7. The socket of claim 1, wherein said lever includes main journaled portions extending along a common axis that define said rotational axis of the lever, said main journaled portions being separated by an offset cam journal, said pocket including cutouts that receive said main journaled portions, said cutouts being positioned to align said rotational axis parallel to said first axis.
- 8. The socket of claim 1, wherein said lever is rotatable about a rotational axis and directly engages said cam assembly to drive said cam assembly in a direction perpendicular to said first axis, said cam assembly driving the cover along the first axis.
- 9. The socket of claim 1, wherein said cam assembly engages the cover at multiple points evenly distributed along a width of the cover between sides of the cover, thereby spreading actuation force over a wide surface area of the cover.
- 10. The socket of claim 1, wherein the cam assembly includes at least one latch engaging a corresponding latch in the base housing, said latches cooperating to retain the cam assembly within the base housing, while permitting sliding movement of the cam assembly relative to the base housing.
- 11. The socket of claim 1, wherein the base housing and cover include pockets and posts, respectively, engaging one another to prevent rotation of the cover with respect to the base housing.
- 12. A socket for an electronic package, comprising:a cover and base housing having sides slidably engaging one another and front and rear ends, the cover and base housing being moveable between open and closed positions along a socket longitudinal axis; an actuation member moving the cover when said actuation member is rotated about a rotational axis, said actuation member being aligned relative to the cover and base housing such that said rotational axis is parallel to said longitudinal axis along which the cover and base housing move relative to one another, said actuation member driving the cover along said longitudinal axis between open and closed positions when said actuation member is rotated about said rotational axis; and a transferring member adapted to transfer rotary motion of said actuation member about said rotational axis to linear motion along said longitudinal axis.
- 13. The socket of claim 12, wherein said transferring member comprises a cam assembly slidably received within the base housing.
- 14. The socket of claim 12, wherein said transferring member includes a cam assembly having at least one pusher bar mounted thereon, said pusher bar slidably engaging the cover to drive the cover between open and closed positions.
- 15. The socket of claim 12, wherein said transferring member includes a plurality of pusher bars and the cover includes an equal plurality of slots slidably receiving said pusher bars, said pusher bars and slots aligned at an angle to said longitudinal axis such that movement of said actuation member along a transverse axis in a direction perpendicular to said longitudinal axis drives the cover along said longitudinal axis.
- 16. The socket of claim 12, wherein at least one of the cover and base housings define a recessed chamber adapted to receive said transferring member.
- 17. The socket of claim 16, wherein said chamber is located near the rear ends of the cover and base housing, said chamber including tracks along opposite sides thereof, said transferring member including a cam assembly slidably received in said tracks and movable within said tracks laterally from one side to another side of the base housing.
- 18. The socket of claim 12, wherein said actuation member further includes a lever having a handle and a leg rotatable about said rotational axis, said leg including an offset cam journal movable along an arcuate path when said handle is rotated about said rotational axis, said cam journal opening and closing the cover when said handle is rotated.
- 19. The socket of claim 12, wherein said actuation member includes main journaled portions extending along a common axis that defines said rotational axis, said main journaled portions being separated by an offset cam journal.
- 20. The socket of claim 19, wherein at least one of the cover and base housings define a recessed chamber including cutouts that rotatably receive said main journaled portions, said cutouts being positioned to align said rotational axis parallel to said longitudinal axis.
- 21. The socket of claim 12, wherein said actuation member includes a rotating lever and said transferring member includes a sliding cam, said rotating lever being rotatable about said rotational axis and driving said sliding cam in a direction at a non-parallel angle to said longitudinal axis, said sliding cam driving the cover along said longitudinal axis.
- 22. The socket of claim 12, wherein said transferring member engages the cover at multiple points evenly distributed along a width of the cover between the sides of the cover, thereby spreading actuation force over a wide surface area of the cover.
- 23. The socket of claim 12, wherein the transferring member includes at least one latch engaging a corresponding latch in the base housing, said latches cooperating to retain the transferring member within the base housing, while permitting sliding movement of the transferring member relative to the base housing.
- 24. The socket of claim 12, wherein the base housing and cover include pockets and posts, respectively, engaging one another to prevent rotation of the cover with respect to the base housing.
- 25. A socket for an electronic package, comprising:a cover and base housing having sides slidably engaging one another and front and rear ends, the cover and base housing being moveable between open and closed positions along a socket longitudinal axis, at least one of the cover and base housing having a recessed chamber; and an actuation member including a slidable cam assembly received in said chamber moving the cover when said actuation member is rotated about a rotational axis, said chamber aligning said actuation member relative to the cover and base housing such that said rotational axis is parallel to said longitudinal axis along which the cover and base housing move relative to one another, said actuation member driving the cover along said longitudinal axis between open and closed positions when said actuation member is rotated about said rotational axis.
- 26. A socket for an electronic package, comprising:a cover and base housing having sides slidably engaging one another and front and rear ends, the cover and base housing being moveable between open and closed positions along a socket longitudinal axis, at least one of the cover and base housing having a recessed chamber; and an actuation member received in said chamber moving the cover when said actuation member is rotated about a rotational axis, said chamber aligning said actuation member relative to the cover and base housing such that said rotational axis is parallel to said longitudinal axis along which the cover and base housing move relative to one another, said actuation member driving the cover along said longitudinal axis between open and closed positions when said actuation member is rotated about said rotational axis, wherein said actuation member includes a cam assembly slidably received within a journaled portion of said chamber, said cam assembly transferring rotary motion of said actuation member about said rotational axis to linear motion along said longitudinal axis.
