Claims
- 1. A pharmaceutical composition having antitussive activity comprising an effective amount of the 1-isomer of 3-(4-phenyl-1-piperazinyl)-1,2-propanediol isolated from a racemic mixture of the 1- and d-isomers, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, said composition exhibiting, when administered to a patient, an essentially equivalent antitussive activity but a substantially lower secondary sedative activity, than a composition comprising a like amount of the racemic mixture.
- 2. A method of treating coughs while minimizing undesirable central nervous system side effects which comprises orally administering to a patient an effective dosage of the pharmaceutical composition according to claim 1.
