Claims
- 1. A lifting system for a vehicle having an elevating cargo box slidably mounted within a generally U-shaped area and movable between at least an elevated position wherein said vehicle may be driven and a lowered position wherein cargo can loaded or unloaded from said cargo box, said lifting system comprising:
- a cargo box drive arrangement;
- a linear actuator responsive to said cargo box drive arrangement;
- a plurality of cables connected to the elevating cargo box;
- a spool arrangement for enpaging said plurality of cables; and
- a flexible drive transmission element for coupling said linear actuator to said spool arrangement, whereby a tensile force in said flexible drive arrangement is converted into a torque applied by said spool arrangement to said plurality of cables.
- 2. A lifting system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said series of cables are wound about said spool arrangement, and said linear actuator drivingly rotates said spool for winding and unwinding said plurality of cables engaged therewith.
- 3. A lifting system as claimed in claim 2 wherein said spool arrangement is provided with a plurality of cable receiving grooves, each for receiving a one of said plurality of cables.
- 4. A lifting system as claimed in claim 3 wherein said cable receiving grooves have different diameters for winding and unwinding respective ones of said plurality of cables.
- 5. A lifting system as claimed in claim 4 wherein said plurality of cables are connected to respective front and rear portions of said elevating cargo box, and said different diameters effect movement of the rear portion of said elevating cargo box to a greater extent than the front portion of said elevating cargo box.
- 6. A lifting system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said plurality of cables are connected to corners on a first side of the elevating cargo box and said spool arrangement is rotatably mounted on said first side of the elevating cargo box, and there is additionally provided a further plurality of cables, said further plurality of cables being connected to corners on a second side of the elevating cargo box and are connected to a further spool arrangement rotatably mounted on the second side ofthe elevating cargo box, and there is additionally provided a further linear actuator and a further flexible drive transmission element for coupling said further linear actuator to said further spool arrangement, whereby a tensile force in said further flexible drive arrangement is converted into a torque applied by said further spool arrangement to said further plurality of cables.
- 7. A lifting system as claimed in claim 6 wherein there are further provided first and second pulleys coaxially mounted outside of said U-shaped area for supporting said flexible drive arrangement and said further flexible drive arrangement, respectively, said first and second pulleys being rotatably mounted and ganged together for synchronous rotation.
- 8. A lifting system as claimed in claim 7 wherein said flexible drive arrangement and said further flexible drive arrangement each are chains.
- 9. A lifting system as claimed in claim 8 wherein each of said chains is connected to a respective one of said linear actuator and said further linear actuator, said linear actuator and said further linear actuator being mounted outside of the U-shaped area.
- 10. A lifting system as claimed in claim 9 wherein said linear actuator and said further linear actuator each comprise a drive cylinder that receives a pressurized fluid from said cargo box drive arrangement.
- 11. A lifting system as claimed in claim 10 wherein there are provided first and second structural support members for forming respective legs of the U-shaped area, and said first and second drive cylinders are mounted on respective ones of said structural support members.
