Claims
- 1. A light absorbing thermoplastic polymer composition, which comprises a thermoplastic polymer, said thermoplastic polymer selected from the group consisting of polyesters, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyurethanes, polycarbonates, cellulose esters, polyacrylates, polyvinylesters, and polyester-amides, blended with a light absorbing polymer represented by Formula (I)

- wherein active methylene residues (A) are selected from the formulae: ##STR95## wherein Q is selected from a group consisting of a covalent bond, --CO.sub.2 --, --CO--, --S--, --O--, --SO.sub.2 --, --CON(R.sub.2)--, --N(SO.sub.2 R.sub.3)-- and --SO.sub.2 N(R.sub.2)--;
- X is selected from a group consisting of cyano; a phenyloxycarbonyl group optionally substituted with halo, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 cycloalkyl, phenyl, phenoxy, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkanoyloxy, hydroxy, and C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxycarbonyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.9 alkylaminocarbonyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylsulfonyl; C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 cycloalkylsulfonyl; and an aryl group selected from the group consisting of phenyl, naphthyl, phenanthyryl, thienyl, furyl, pyrrolyl, imidazolyl, pyrazolyl, thiazolyl, isothiazolyl, oxazolyl, isoxazolyl, triazolyl, thiadiazolyl, oxadiazolyl, tetrazolyl, thiatrizolyl, oxatrizolyl, pyridyl, pyrimidyl, pyrazinyl, pyridizinyl, thiazinyl, oxazinyl, triazinyl, thiadiazinyl, oxadiazinyl, dithiazinyl, dioxazinyl, oxathiazinyl, tetrazinyl, thiatriazinyl, oxatriazinyl, dithiadiazinyl, imidazolinyl, dihydropyrimidyl, tetrahydropyrimidyl, tetrazolo, purinyl, benzoxazolyl, benzothiazolyl, benzimidazolyl, and indolyl; and said aryl groups substituted once with a group selected from the group consisting of halo, phenoxy, phenyl, hydroxy, amino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro, carboxy, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylsulfonyl, and C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy;
- Y is selected from the group consisting of --O--, --S--, --NH-- and an imino group substituted once with a group selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 cycloalkyl, and an aryl group selected from the group consisting of phenyl, naphthyl, phenanthyryl, thienyl, furyl, pyrrolyl, imidazolyl, pyrazolyl, thiazolyl, isothiazolyl, oxazolyl, isoxazolyl, triazolyl, thiadizolyl, oxadiazolyl, tetrazolyl, thiatrizolyl, oxatrizolyl, pyridyl, pyrimidyl, pyrazinyl, pyridizinyl, thiazinyl, oxazinyl, triazinyl, thiadiazinyl, oxadiazinyl, dithiazinyl, dioxazinyl, oxathiazinyl, tetrazinyl, thiatriazinyl, oxatriazinyl, dithiadiazinyl, imidazolinyl, dihydropyrimidyl, tetrahydropyrimidyl, tetrazolo, purinyl, benzoxazolyl, benzothiazolyl, benzimidazolyl, and indolyl;
- Z.sup.- is a counter anion;
- R is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, or an aryl group selected from the group consisting of phenyl, napthyl, phenanthyryl, thienyl, furyl, pyrrolyl, imidazolyl, pyrazolyl, thiazolyl, isothiazolyl, oxazolyl, isoxazolyl, triazolyl, thiadizolyl, oxadiazolyl, tetrazolyl, thiatrizolyl, oxatrizolyl, pyridyl, pyrimidyl, pyrazinyl, pyridizinyl, thiazinyl, oxazinyl, triazinyl, thiadiazinyl, oxadiazinyl, dithiazinyl, dioxazinyl, oxathiazinyl, tetrazinyl, thiatriazinyl, oxatriazinyl, dithiadiazinyl, imidazolinyl, dihydropyrimidyl, tetrahydropyrimidyl, tetrazolo, purinyl, benzoxazolyl, benzothiazolyl, benzimidazolyl, and indolyl; and said aryl groups substituted once with a group selected from the group consisting of halo, phenoxy, phenyl, hydroxy, amino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro, carboxy, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylsulfonyl, and C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy;
- R.sub.1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy or halogen;
- R.sub.2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl substituted by a group selected from the group consisting of halo, phenyl, phenoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoyloxy, hydroxy, amino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro, carboxy C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylsulfonyl, cyclohexyl, carbamoyl, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylsulfonyl, and C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy; C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 cycloalkyl; or an aryl group selected from the list consisting of phenyl, napthyl, phenanthyryl, thienyl, furyl, pyrrolyl, imidazolyl, pyrazolyl, thiazolyl, isothiazolyl, oxazolyl, isoxazolyl, triazolyl, thiadizolyl, oxadiazolyl, tetrazolyl, thiatrizolyl, oxatrizolyl, pyridyl, pyrimidyl, pyrazinyl, pyridizinyl, thiazinyl, oxazinyl, triazinyl, thiadiazinyl, oxadiazinyl, dithiazinyl, dioxazinyl, oxathiazinyl, tetrazinyl, thiatriazinyl, oxatriazinyl, dithiadiazinyl, imidazolinyl, dihydropyrimidyl, tetrahydropyrimidyl, tetrazolo, purinyl, benzoxazolyl, benzothiazolyl, benzimidazolyl, and indolyl; and said aryl groups substituted once with a group selected from the group consisting of halo, phenoxy, phenyl, hydroxy, amino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro, carboxy, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylsulfonyl, and C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy;
- R.sub.3 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, optionally substituted by one or more groups selected from the group consisting of halo, phenoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoyloxy, hydroxy, amino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro, carboxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylsulfonyl, cyclohexyl, carbamoyl, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylsulfonylamino, and C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy; C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 cycloalkyl; an aryl group selected from the group consisting of phenyl, napthyl, phenanthyryl, thienyl, furyl, pyrrolyl, imidazolyl, pyrazolyl, thiazolyl, isothiazolyl, oxazolyl, isoxazolyl, triazolyl, thiadizolyl, oxadiazolyl, tetrazolyl, thiatrizolyl, oxatrizolyl, pyridyl, pyrimidyl, pyrazinyl, pyridizinyl, thiazinyl, oxazinyl, triazinyl, thiadiazinyl, oxadiazinyl, dithiazinyl, dioxazinyl, oxathiazinyl, tetrazinyl, thiatriazinyl, oxatriazinyl, dithiadiazinyl, imidazolinyl, dihydropyrimidyl, tetrahydropyrimidyl, tetrazolo, purinyl, benzoxazolyl, benzothiazolyl, benzimidazolyl, and indolyl; wherein the divalent moiety B is represented by one of the following formulae: ##STR96## wherein R.sub.4 and R.sub.10 are hydrogen or 1-2 substituents selected from C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy or halogen;
- R.sub.5 and R.sub.12 are selected from unsubstituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl; C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyl; C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 cycloalkyl; phenyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl substituted by one or more groups selected from the group consisting of halo, phenyl, phenoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanoyloxy, hydroxy, amino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro, carboxy C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylsulfonyl, cyclohexyl, carbamoyl, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylsulfonyl, and C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxy; C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 cycloalkyl; and phenyl;
- R.sub.6 is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylene, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 cycloalkylene, phenylene, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylenephenylene C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene-(C.sub.3 -C.sub.8)cycloalkylene-C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene--O--C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene--S--C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene--SO.sub.2 --C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene--O--phenylene--O--C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene--N(SO.sub.2 R.sub.3)C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene, and C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene-phenylene;

- R.sub.13 is selected from C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylene, --O--R.sub.6 -- or N(SO.sub.2 R.sub.3)--R.sub.6 --;
- L is selected from the group consisting of a direct bond, --O--, --CH.sub.2 -- and --CH(CH.sub.3)--; and n is an integer of from about 2 to about 40.
- 2. The light-absorbing thermoplastic polymer composition of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a polyurethane.
- 3. The light-absorbing thermoplastic polymer composition of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is polyvinyl chloride.
- 4. The light-absorbing thermoplastic polymer composition of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is polyvinylidene chloride.
- 5. The light-absorbing thermoplastic polymer composition of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a polycarbonate.
- 6. The light-absorbing thermoplastic polymer composition of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a polyester.
- 7. The light-absorbing thermoplastic polymer composition of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a polyacrylate.
- 8. The light-absorbing thermoplastic polymer composition of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a polyester-amide.
- 9. The light-absorbing thermoplastic polymer composition of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a blend of a polyester and a polycarbonate.
