[Substrate/Electrode]

[Production Method of Light Emitting Device]

The methods for forming the first layer, the second layer, the third layer and other layers in the light emitting device of the present embodiment include, for example, dry methods such as a vacuum vapor deposition method and the like and the wet methods described in the section of the ink 2, when a low-molecular compound is used, and include, for example, the wet methods described in the section of the ink 2, when a polymer compound is used. The first layer, the second layer, the third layer and other layers may be formed by the wet method described in the section of the ink 2 or may be formed by a dry method such as a vacuum vapor deposition method and the like, using the above-described various inks or inks containing the various materials.

When the first layer is formed by a wet method, it is preferable to use the ink 1. The first layer is preferably formed by a wet method, since production of the light emitting device of the present embodiment is easy. For example, when the first layer is laminated on the second layer (or third layer) utilizing the difference in solubility from the second layer (or third layer), it becomes easy to laminate the first layer by using a solution having low solubility in the second layer (or third layer).

When the second layer is formed by a wet method, it is preferable to use the ink 2. The second layer is preferably formed by a wet method, since production of the light emitting device of the present embodiment is easy.

After formation of the second layer, the polymer compound having a crosslinkable group contained in the second layer can be crosslinked by heating or light irradiation. After forming the second layer, the polymer compound having a crosslinkable group contained in the second layer is preferably crosslinked by heating. Since the second layer is contained in the state where the compound having a crosslinkable group is crosslinked (a crosslinked product of the polymer compound having a crosslinkable group), the second layer is substantially insolubilized in a solvent. Hence, the second layer can be suitably used for lamination of a light emitting device.

The heating temperature for crosslinking is usually 25° C. to 300° C., preferably 50° C. to 260° C., more preferably 130° C. to 230° C., and further preferably 180° C. to 210° C.

The heating time is usually 0.1 minutes to 1000 minutes, preferably 0.5 minutes to 500 minutes, more preferably 1 minute to 120 minutes, and further preferably 10 minutes to 60 minutes.

The type of the light used for irradiation is, for example, ultraviolet ray, near-ultraviolet ray or visible light.

When the third layer is formed by a wet method, it is preferable to use the ink 3. The third layer is preferably formed by a wet method, since production of the light emitting device of the present embodiment is easy.

The light emitting device of the present embodiment can be produced, for example, by sequentially laminating each layer on substrate. Specifically, a light emitting device can be produced by providing an anode on a substrate, providing layers of a hole injection layer, a hole transporting layer and the like on this, providing a light emitting layer on this, providing layers of an electron transporting layer, an electron injection layer and the like on this, and further laminating a cathode on this. As other production methods, a light emitting device can be produced by providing a cathode on a substrate, providing layers of an electron injection layer, an electron transporting layer, a light emitting layer, a hole transporting layer, a hole injection layer and the like on this, and further laminating an anode on this. As further other production methods, a light emitting device can be produced by joining an anode or an anode-side substrate on which each layer is laminated on an anode and a cathode or a cathode-side substrate on which each layer is laminated on a cathode so as to face each other.

In fabrication of the light emitting device of the present embodiment, when the material used for forming a hole injection layer, the material used for forming a light emitting layer, the material used for forming a hole transporting layer, the material used for forming an electron transporting layer and the material used for forming an electron injection layer are each soluble in solvents used in forming layers adjacent to the hole injection layer, the light emitting layer, the hole transporting layer, the electron transporting layer and the electron injection layer, it is preferable to prevent the materials from dissolving in the solvents. The method for preventing dissolution of the material is preferably i) a method using a material having a crosslinkable group or ii) a method of making a difference in the solubility of adjacent layers in a solvent. In the above-described method i), after forming a layer using the material having a crosslinkable group, the layer can be insolubilized by crosslinking the crosslinkable group. Further, in the above-described method ii), for example, when an electron transporting layer is laminated on a light emitting layer by utilizing a difference in solubility, the electron transporting layer can be laminated on the light emitting layer by using an ink having low solubility for the light emitting layer.

[Application of Light Emitting Device]

In order to obtain planar light emission using a light emitting device, a planar anode and a planar cathode may be arranged so that they overlap with each other. In order to obtain a patterned light emission, there are a method of providing a mask with a patterned window on the surface of a planar light emitting device, a method of forming a layer to be a non-light emitting portion with an extremely large thickness to make it substantially non-luminescent, and a method of forming an anode or a cathode, or both electrodes in a Pattern. By forming a pattern by any of the above-mentioned methods and arranging some electrodes so that they can be turned ON/OFF independently, a segment type display device capable of displaying numbers, characters and the like can be obtained. In order to obtain a dot matrix display device, both the anode and the cathode may be formed in stripes and arranged so as to be orthogonal to each other. Partial color display and multi-color display become possible by a method of separately coating a plurality of types of polymer compounds having different emission colors or a method of using a color filter or a fluorescence conversion filter. The dot matrix display device can be passively driven or can be actively driven in combination with TFT or the like. These display devices can be used for displays of computers, televisions, mobile terminals and the like. The planar light emitting device can be suitably used as a planar light source for a backlight of a liquid crystal display device or a planar light source for illumination. If a flexible substrate is used, it can be used also as a curved light source and a curved display device.

In examples, the polystyrene-equivalent number-average molecular weight (Mn) and the polystyrene-equivalent weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of polymer compounds were determined by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) using tetrahydrofuran as the mobile phase. The measurement conditions of SEC are as follows.

The polymer compound to be measured was dissolved at a concentration of about 0.05% by mass in tetrahydrofuran, and 10 μL of the solution was injected into SEC. The mobile phase was flowed at a flow rate of 2.0 mL/min. As the column, PLgel MIXED-B (manufactured by Polymer Laboratories Ltd.) was used. As the detector, UV-VIS Detector (manufactured by Shimadzu Corp., trade name: SPD-10Avp) was used.

LC-MS was measured by the following method.

The measurement sample was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran to a concentration of about 2 mg/mL, and about 1 μL of the solution was injected into LC-MS (manufactured by Agilent Technologies, trade name: 1290 Infinity LC and 6230 TOF LC/MS). As the mobile phase for LC-MS, acetonitrile and tetrahydrofuran were flowed at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min while changing the ratio of acetonitrile/tetrahydrofuran. As the column, SUMIPAX ODS Z-CLUE (manufactured by Sumika Chemical Analysis Service, Ltd., internal diameter: 4.6 mm, length: 250 mm, particle diameter: 3 μm) was used.

NMR was measured by the following method.

Five to ten milligrams (5 to 10 mg) of the measurement sample was dissolved in about 0.5 mL of heavy tetrahydrofuran, and NMR thereof was measured using an NMR apparatus (manufactured by JEOL RESONANCE

Inc., trade name: JNM-ECZ400S/L1).

As the indicator for the purity of a compound, the value of the area percentage of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used. This value is a value at UV=254 nm by HPLC (manufactured by Shimadzu Corp., trade name: LC-20A), unless otherwise stated. In this procedure, the compound to be measured was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran to a concentration of 0.01 to 0.2% by mass, and the solution was injected into HPLC in an amount of 1 to 10 μL depending on the concentration. As the mobile phase of HPLC, acetonitrile and tetrahydrofuran were flowed at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min while changing the ratio of acetonitrile/tetrahydrofuran from 100/0 to 0/100 (volume ratio). As the column, SUMIPAX CDS Z-CLUE (manufactured by Sumika Chemical Analysis Service, Ltd., internal diameter: 4.6 mm, length: 250 mm, particle diameter: 3 μm) was used. As the detector, Photodiode Array Detector (manufactured by Shimadzu Corp., trade name: SPD-M20A) was used.

<Example D1> Fabrication and Evaluation of Light Emitting Device D1
(Formation of Anode and Hole Injection Layer)

An ITO film was attached with a thickness of 45 nm to a glass substrate by a sputtering method, to form an anode. A hole injection material ND-3202 (manufactured by Nissan Chemical Corporation) was spin-coated on the anode, to form a film with a thickness of 35 nm. Under an air atmosphere, the film was heated on a hot plate at 50° C. for 3 minutes, and further, heated at 230° C. for 15 minutes, to form a hole injection layer.

(Formation of Second Layer)

The polymer compound HTL-1 was dissolved at a concentration of 0.7% by mass in xylene. The resultant xylene solution was spin-coated on the hole injection layer to form a film with a thickness of 20 nm, and the film was heated on a hot plate at 180° C. for 60 minutes under a nitrogen gas atmosphere, to form a second layer (hole transporting layer). By this heating, the polymer compound HTL-1 became a crosslinked product.

(Formation of Third Layer)

The compound HM-1 and the metal complex B1 (compound HM-1/metal complex B1=75% by mass/25% by mass) were dissolved at a concentration of 2% by mass in toluene. The resultant toluene solution was spin-coated on the second layer to form a film with a thickness of 80 nm, and the film was heated at 130° C. for 10 minutes under a nitrogen gas atmosphere, to form a third layer (light emitting layer).

(Formation of First Layer)

The compound ET1 was dissolved at a concentration of 0.25% by mass in 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluoro-1-pentanol. The resultant 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluoro-1-pentanol solution was spin-coated on the third layer to form a film with a thickness of 10 nm, and the film was heated at 130° C. for 10 minutes under a nitrogen gas atmosphere, to form a first layer (electron transporting layer).

(Formation of Cathode)

The substrate carrying the first layer formed thereon was placed in a vapor deposition machine and the internal pressure thereof was reduced to 1.0×10−4 Pa or less, then, sodium fluoride was vapor-deposited with a thickness of about 4 nm on the first layer, then, aluminum was vapor-deposited with a thickness of about 80 nm on the sodium fluoride layer, as cathodes. After vapor deposition, sealing was performed using a glass substrate, to fabricate a light emitting device D1.

(Evaluation of Light Emitting Device)

Voltage was applied to the light emitting device D1, to observe EL emission. The external quantum efficiency [%] and the CIE chromaticity coordinate (x,y) at 100 cd/m2 were measured.

A light emitting device CD1 was fabricated in the same manner as in Example D1, except that “the polymer compound HTL-C1” was used instead of “the polymer compound HTL-1” in (Formation of second layer) in Example D1.

Voltage was applied to the light emitting device CD1, to observe EL emission. The external quantum efficiency [%] and the CIE chromaticity coordinate (x,y) at 100 cd/m2 were measured. The CIE chromaticity coordinate (x,y) is xy chromaticity coordinate (x,y) based on the XYZ color system which is an international display method formulated in 1931 by International Illumination Commission (CIE: Commission Internationale de l′Eclairage).
