The present disclosure herein relates to a light emitting element, a polycyclic compound for the light emitting element, and a display device including the light emitting element.
Recently, the development of an organic electroluminescence display device, as an image display device, is being actively conducted. The organic electroluminescence display device and/or the like includes a so-called “self-luminescent” light emitting element in which holes and electrons, respectively injected from a first electrode and a second electrode combine in an emission layer of the display device. Subsequently, a luminescent material of the emission layer (e.g., light emitting layer) emits light to implement display (e.g., of an image).
The application of a light emitting element to a display device requires, or there is a desire or demand for, a light emitting element having improved light efficiency, improved service life, and/or the like. Therefore, the need exists for research and development on materials for a light emitting element capable of stably attaining such characteristics or desires, and such development is being continuously pursued.
In recent years, two areas of research being conducted to implement a highly efficient light emitting element, include technologies pertaining to phosphorescence emission, utilizing triplet state energy and delayed fluorescence, utilizing triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) (e.g., in which singlet excitons are generated by collision of triplet excitons). Another area of research being developed is thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials utilizing delayed fluorescence phenomenon.

It will be understood that, although the terms “first,” “second,” and/or the like, may be utilized herein to describe one or more suitable components, these components should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only utilized to distinguish one component from another. For example, a first component could be termed a second component, and, similarly, a second component could be termed a first component, without departing from the scope of example embodiments of the present disclosure. As utilized herein, the singular forms, “a,” “an,” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.
In the present application, it will be understood that the terms “include,” “includes,” “including,” “comprise,” “comprises”, “comprising,” “has,” “having,” and/or “have,” and/or the like specify the presence of features, numbers, steps, operations, component, parts, or combinations thereof disclosed in the specification, but do not exclude the possibility of presence or addition of one or more other features, numbers, steps, operations, component, parts, or combinations thereof.

The emission layer EML in the light emitting element ED of one or more embodiments may include a polycyclic compound according to one or more embodiments. In the light emitting element ED of one or more embodiments, the emission layer EML may include a first compound, which is the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments, and at least one of a second compound or a third compound. Additionally, in the light emitting element ED of one or more embodiments, the emission layer EML may further include a fourth compound. The second compound may include a tricyclic fused ring containing a nitrogen atom as a ring-forming atom. The third compound may include a hexagonal ring group containing at least one nitrogen atom as a ring-forming atom. The fourth compound may include an organometallic complex. The second to fourth compounds are described in more detail elsewhere herein.
In the present specification, the first compound may be referred to as a polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments. The polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments includes, as a central structure, a pentacyclic fused ring containing two nitrogen (N) atoms and one boron (B) atom as ring-forming atoms. The two nitrogen atoms may be referred to as (e.g., divided into) a first nitrogen atom and a second nitrogen atom. In the present specification, the pentacyclic fused ring central structure may be referred to as a “core part (e.g., region).”
The polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may include a structure in which first to third aromatic rings are fused via the first nitrogen atom, the second nitrogen atom, and the boron atom. The first aromatic ring may be linked to the second aromatic ring via the boron atom and the first nitrogen atom. The second aromatic ring may be linked to the third aromatic ring via the boron atom and the second nitrogen atom. The second aromatic ring may be linked to each (e.g., all) of the first nitrogen atom, the second nitrogen atom, and the boron atom. In some embodiments, the first to third aromatic rings may each be linked to the boron atom.
The polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may have a substituent introduced into at least one selected from among the first to third aromatic rings in the pentacyclic fused ring central structure. For example, the introduction of the substituent into each of the first to third aromatic rings may protect the boron atom of the core part (e.g., region). Accordingly, the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may exhibit the characteristics with improved or suitable material stability.
In the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments, parts (e.g., regions) of the first nitrogen atom and the second nitrogen atom in the core part may have high electron density. In the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments, a substituent capable of suppressing Dexter energy transfer may be linked to at least one of the first nitrogen atom or the second nitrogen atom in the core part (e.g., regions). For example, the substituent linked to at least one of the first nitrogen atom or the second nitrogen atom in the core part (e.g., region) may be a heteroaryl group containing a nitrogen (N) atom, an oxygen (O) atom, or a sulfur (S) atom as a ring-forming atom. The polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments includes a first substituent linked to the core part (e.g., region) to more effectively protect the boron atom of the core part (e.g., region), and thus, may have a chemical stabilization effect of the compound and may contribute to improving the service life of the light emitting element ED by suppressing Dexter energy transfer. In some embodiments, the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments includes the first substituent linked to the nitrogen atom of the core part (e.g., region), and thus has an improved absorbance, thereby facilitating energy transfer from the host in the light emitting element ED. Accordingly, the light emitting element ED including the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments as a luminescent material may have improved luminous efficiency and service life. In the present specification, the heteroaryl group linked to at least one of the first nitrogen atom or the second nitrogen atom may be referred to as a first substituent.
The first substituent may be represented by Formula A. In Formula A, X may be NRa, O, or S, and Ra may be a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group. The first substituent represented by Formula A may exhibit electron pulling (e.g., withdrawing) properties at position 1 and position 4. The first substituent may be linked to the nitrogen atom of the core part at a position having electron pulling (e.g., withdrawing) properties. When the first substituent is linked to the nitrogen atom of the core part (e.g., region) of the polycyclic compound at position 1, the planar characteristics of the core part (e.g., region) may be broken, and thus the first substituent included in the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may be linked to at least one of the first nitrogen atom or the second nitrogen atom of the core part (e.g., region) at position 4. As a result, the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may have enhanced multiple resonance effects due to highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) sequential separation between atoms in the core part (e.g., region) including the nitrogen atom and the boron atom.
The polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may further include a substituent (or a second substituent) having a high (e.g., large amount of) steric hindrance further substituted at the first substituent linked to the core part (e.g., region), and thus the protecting effect of the core part (e.g., region) may be enhanced, thereby further increasing the material stability. For example, in the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments, the introduction of the second substituent at position 6 of the first substituent linked to the nitrogen atom of the core part (e.g., region) may maximize or increase the suppression of Dexter energy transfer, and may keep the intermolecular distance between the polycyclic compound and a host and/or the like included in the light emitting element ED. Accordingly, the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may have maximized or increased material stability in the light emitting element ED, thereby improving the service life.
The light emitting element ED of one or more embodiments may include the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments. The polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may be represented by Formula 1: In the polycyclic compound represented by Formula 1, the benzene ring, to which R3 is linked, may correspond to the aforementioned first aromatic ring, the benzene ring, to which R1 is linked, may correspond to the aforementioned second aromatic ring, and the benzene ring, to which R2 is linked, may correspond to the aforementioned third aromatic ring.
In Formula 1, X1 may be NR8, O, or S. In the polycyclic compound represented by Formula 1, a heteroaryl group which contains X1 as a ring-forming atom and is linked to the nitrogen atom of the core part (e.g., region) may correspond to the aforementioned first substituent. The first substituent may be linked to the nitrogen atom of the core part at position 4, and thus may suppress or reduce the intermolecular interaction.
In Formula 1, R1 to R5 may each independently be a hydrogen atom, a deuterium atom, a cyano group, a halogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group having 5 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms.
For example, R1 to R3 may each independently be a hydrogen atom, a deuterium atom, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group having 5 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms. For example, in the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments, R1 to R3 may each independently be a hydrogen atom, a deuterium atom, a substituted or unsubstituted t-butyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted carbazole group. When each of R1 to R3 is substituted with another substituent, it may be substituted with a deuterium atom, a cyano group, or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group. For example, it may be substituted with a deuterium atom, a cyano group, an unsubstituted t-butyl group, and/or the like, but the embodiment of the present disclosure is not limited thereto. For example, R4 and R5 may each independently be a hydrogen atom or a deuterium atom, but the embodiment of the present disclosure is not limited thereto.
In Formula 1, R6 may be a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group having 5 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms. For example, R6 may be a substituted or unsubstituted t-butyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted biphenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted terphenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted fluorenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted dibenzofuran group, a substituted or unsubstituted dibenzothiophene group, or a substituted or unsubstituted carbazole group. When R6 is substituted with another substituent, it may be substituted with a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group. For example, it may be substituted with an unsubstituted t-butyl group, an unsubstituted phenyl group, and/or the like, but the embodiment of the present disclosure is not limited thereto.
In one or more embodiments, R6 may be represented by any one among (e.g., selected from among) the substituents in Substituent Group 1.
The polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may exhibit a steric hindrance effect that may prevent or reduce other materials (e.g., compounds) (e.g., it is difficult for other materials to) access to the core part (e.g., region). For example, the steric hindrance effect may occur as a substituent of R6 is additionally introduced at position 6 of the first substituent linked to the nitrogen atom of the core part (e.g., region). Accordingly, in the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments, the suppression of the Dexter energy transfer is maximized or increased, and the material stability in the light emitting element ED may be further improved.
In Formula 1, R7 may be a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group having 5 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms. For example, R7 may be a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted biphenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted terphenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted carbazole group, a substituted or unsubstituted dibenzofuran group, or a substituted or unsubstituted dibenzothiophene group. When R7 is substituted with another substituent, it may be substituted with a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group. For example, it may be substituted with an unsubstituted t-butyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted biphenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted fluorenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted carbazole group, a substituted or unsubstituted dibenzofuran group, a substituted or unsubstituted dibenzothiophene group, and/or the like, but the embodiment of the present disclosure is not limited thereto.
In Formula 1, R8 may be a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms. For example, R8 may be a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group.
In Formula 1, n1, n4, and n5 may each independently be an integer of 0 to 3. n2 and n3 may each independently be an integer of 0 to 4. When each of n1 to n5 is 0, the polycyclic compound according to one or more embodiments may not be substituted with each of R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5. The case where each of n1, n4, and n5 is 0 may be the same as the case where each of n1, n4, and n5 is 3 and three R1's, three R4's, and three R5's are each hydrogen atoms. In some embodiments, the case where each of n2 and n3 is 0 may be the same as the case where each of n2 and n3 is 4 and four R2's and four R3's are each hydrogen atoms. When each of n1 to n5 is an integer of 2 or greater, a plurality of R1's, R2's, R3's, R4's, and R5's may each be the same or at least one may be different from the rest.
For example, when n1 is 3, R1 bound to the second aromatic ring in the para relation to the boron atom of the core part may be a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group having 5 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms, and the remaining two R1's bound to the second aromatic ring may all be hydrogen atoms or deuterium atoms. However, the embodiment of the present disclosure is not limited thereto, and the number and type or kind of substituted R1 may vary with one or more embodiments of the polycyclic compound.
For example, when each of n2 and n3 is 4, R3 bonded to the first aromatic ring in the para relation to the boron atom of the core part and R2 bonded to the third aromatic ring may be a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group having 5 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms, and the remaining three R3 bonded to the first aromatic ring and the remaining three R2 bonded to the third aromatic ring may each be hydrogen atoms or deuterium atoms. However, the embodiment of the present disclosure is not limited thereto, and the numbers and types (kinds) of substituted R2 and R3 may vary with one or more embodiments of the polycyclic compound.
In one or more embodiments, n1+n2+n3≠0, and at least one among R1 to R3 may not be a hydrogen atom. For example, the polycyclic compound represented by Formula 1 of one or more embodiments may have at least one substituent selected from among R1 to R3 rather than a hydrogen atom substituted at the core part. For example, each of R1 to R3 may be provided in plurality, and at least one selected from among a plurality of R1's to R3's may each not be a hydrogen atom.
In the polycyclic compound represented by Formula 1 of one or more embodiments, at least one hydrogen atom may be substituted with a deuterium atom. In one or more embodiments, at least one hydrogen atom selected from among X1 and R1 to R7 in Formula 1 may be substituted with a deuterium atom. For example, at least one selected from among X1 and R1 to R7 may be a deuterium atom or a substituent containing a deuterium atom.
The polycyclic compound represented by Formula 1 of one or more embodiments may be represented by Formula 2. For example, Formula 2 represents a structure in which substituents may be substituted at each of the first to third aromatic rings. Accordingly, the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may exhibit a steric hindrance effect that may prevent other materials (e.g., compounds) (e.g., it is difficult for other materials to) access to the core part (e.g., region) because the first substituent is linked to the nitrogen atom of the core part (e.g., region) and substituents are linked to the first to third aromatic rings. Thus, the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may maximize or increase the effect of protecting the core part.
For example, the boron atom contained in the core part has electron-deficient characteristics due to an empty p-orbital, and thus may easily bonded to other nucleophiles or deterioration products (e.g., radicals, and/or the like) (e.g., in the light-emitting element). When the boron atom is bonded to other nucleophiles or deterioration products, the boron atom having a trigonal planar bonding structure in the core part (e.g., region) of the polycyclic compound may be converted into a tetrahedral bonding structure, which may be a cause of deterioration in the light-emitting element. Because the first substituent is linked to the nitrogen atom of the core part (e.g., region) and substituents that may have a steric hindrance effect on each of the first to third aromatic rings, the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may effectively protect the empty p-orbital of the boron atom, thereby preventing or reducing the deterioration due to the structural deformation of materials.
In Formula 2, the definitions as described in Formula 1 may be applied to X1, R4 to R7, n4, and n5.
In Formula 2, R11, R21, and R31 may each independently be a hydrogen atom, a deuterium atom, a cyano group, a halogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group having 5 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms. For example, R11, R21, and R31 may each independently be a hydrogen atom or a deuterium atom.
In Formula 2, n11 may be an integer of 0 to 2, and n21 and n31 may each independently be an integer of 0 to 3. In Formula 2, when each of n11, n21, and n31 is 0, the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may not be substituted with each of R11, R21, and R31. When each of n11, n21, and n31 is 2 or greater, a plurality of R11's, R21's, and R31's may each be the same or at least one may be different from the rest.
In Formula 2, R12, R22 and R32 may each independently be a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group having 5 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms. For example, R12, R22, and R32 may each independently be a substituted or unsubstituted t-butyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted carbazole group. When each of R12, R22, and R32 is substituted, each may be substituted with a deuterium atom, a t-butyl group, and/or the like, but the embodiment of the present disclosure is not limited thereto.
In one or more embodiments, at least one of R12, R22, or R32 may be in a para relation to the boron atom of the core part (e.g., region). For example, R12 may be linked to the second aromatic ring in the para relation to the boron atom of the core part (e.g., region). In some embodiments, R22 may be linked to the third aromatic ring in the para relation to the boron atom of the core part (e.g., region), and R32 may be linked to the first aromatic ring in the para relation to the boron atom of the core part (e.g., region). However, the embodiment of the present disclosure is not limited thereto, and R22 and R32 may be bonded to the third aromatic ring and the first aromatic ring, respectively, in a meta relation to the boron atom of the core part (e.g., region).

For example, Ri5 may be a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group. The first substituent containing X1 as a ring-forming atom is linked to the first nitrogen atom of the core part (e.g., region), and the first substituent containing X2 as a ring-forming atom is linked to the second nitrogen atom of the core part (e.g., region), and thus the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may suppress or reduce the intermolecular interaction.
In Formula 4, i2 and i3 may each independently be an integer of 0 to 3. Ri2 and Ri3 may each independently be a hydrogen atom, a deuterium atom, a cyano group, a halogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group having 5 to 30 ring-forming carbon atoms. For example, Ri2 and Ri3 may each independently be a hydrogen atom or a deuterium atom.
When each of i2 and i3 is 0, the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may not be substituted with each of Ri2 and Ri3. The case where each of i2 and i3 is 0 may be the same as the case where each of i2 and i3 is 3, and three Ri2's and three Ri3's are each hydrogen atoms. For example, Ri4 may be a substituted or unsubstituted t-butyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted biphenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted terphenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted fluorenyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted dibenzofuran group, a substituted or unsubstituted dibenzothiophene group, or a substituted or unsubstituted carbazole group. When Ri4 is substituted with another substituent, it may be substituted with a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group. For example, it may be substituted with an unsubstituted t-butyl group, an unsubstituted phenyl group, and/or the like, but the embodiment of the present disclosure is not limited thereto. In one or more embodiments, Ri4 may be represented by any one selected from among the substituents listed in Substituent Group 1 as described herein.
In Formula 3 and Formula 4, the definitions as described in Formula 1 may be applied to X1, R1 to R6, and n1 to n5.

In Formula D-1, R61 to R66 may each independently be a hydrogen atom, a deuterium atom, a halogen atom, a cyano group, a substituted or unsubstituted silyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted thio group, a substituted or unsubstituted oxy group, a substituted or unsubstituted amine group, a substituted or unsubstituted boron group, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted alkenyl group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 60 ring-forming carbon atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group having 2 to 60 ring-forming carbon atoms. In Formula D-1, d1 to d4 may each independently be an integer of 0 to 4. In Formula D-1, when each of d1 to d4 is 0, the fourth compound may not be substituted with each of R61 to R64. The case where each of d1 to d4 is 4 and R61's to R64′ are each hydrogen atoms may be the same as the case where each of d1 to d4 is 0. When each of d1 to d4 is an integer of 2 or more, a plurality of R61's to R64's may each be the same or at least one among the plurality of R61's to R64's may be different from the others.

The emission layer EML of one or more embodiments may include the first compound, which is a fused polycyclic compound, and at least one of the second to fourth compounds. For example, the emission layer EML may include the first compound, the second compound, and the third compound. In the emission layer EML, the second compound and the third compound may form an exciplex, and the energy may be transferred from the exciplex to the first compound, thereby emitting light.
In some embodiments, the emission layer EML may include the first compound, the second compound, the third compound, and the fourth compound. In the emission layer EML, the second compound and the third compound may form an exciplex, and the energy may be transferred from the exciplex to the fourth compound and the first compound, thereby emitting light. In one or more embodiments, the fourth compound may be a sensitizer. The fourth compound included in the emission layer EML in the light emitting element ED of one or more embodiments may serve as a sensitizer to deliver energy from the host to the first compound that is a light emitting dopant. For example, the fourth compound serving as an auxiliary dopant accelerates energy delivery to the first compound that is a light emitting dopant, thereby increasing the emission ratio of the first compound. Therefore, the emission layer EML of one or more embodiments may improve luminous efficiency. In some embodiments, when the energy delivery to the first compound is increased, an exciton formed in the emission layer EML is not accumulated inside the emission layer EML and emits light rapidly, and thus deterioration of the device may be reduced. Therefore, the service life of the light emitting element ED of one or more embodiments may increase.
The light emitting element ED of one or more embodiments may include all of the first compound, the second compound, the third compound, and the fourth compound, and the emission layer EML may include the combination of two host materials and two dopant materials. In the light emitting element ED of one or more embodiments, the emission layer EML may concurrently (e.g., simultaneously) include the second compound and the third compound, which are two different hosts, the first compound that emits a delayed fluorescence, and the fourth compound including an organometallic complex, thereby exhibiting excellent or suitable luminous efficiency characteristics.
In one or more embodiments, the fourth compound represented by Formula D-1 may represented at least one among the compounds represented by Compound Group 4. The emission layer EML may include at least one selected from among the compounds represented by Compound Group 4 as a sensitizer material.
In the embodiment compounds presented in Compound Group 4, “D” refers to a deuterium atom.
When the emission layer EML in the light emitting element ED of one or more embodiments includes each (e.g., all) of the first compound, the second compound, and the third compound, with respect to the total weight of the first compound, the second compound, and the third compound, the content (e.g., amount) of the first compound may be about 0.1 wt % to about 5 wt %. However, the embodiment of the present disclosure is not limited thereto. When the content (e.g., amount) of the first compound satisfies the described proportion, the energy transfer from the second compound and the third compound to the first compound may increase, and thus the luminous efficiency and device service life may increase.
The contents of the second compound and the third compound in the emission layer EML may be the rest (e.g., total weight of the emission layer EML) excluding the weight (e.g., amount) of the first compound. For example, the contents of the second compound and the third compound in the emission layer EML may be about 65 wt % to about 95 wt % with respect to the total weight of the first compound, the second compound, and the third compound.
In the total weight of the second compound and the third compound, the weight ratio of the second compound and the third compound may be about 3:7 to about 7:3.
When the contents (e.g., amounts) of the second compound and the third compound satisfy the described ratio, a charge balance characteristic in the emission layer EML are improved, and thus the luminous efficiency and device service life may increase. When the contents (e.g., amounts) of the second compound and the third compound deviate from the described ratio range, a charge balance in the emission layer EML is broken, and thus the luminous efficiency may be reduced and the device may be easily deteriorated.
When the emission layer EML includes the fourth compound, the content (e.g., amount) of the fourth compound in the emission layer EML may be about 4 wt % to about 30 wt % with respect to the total weight of the first compound, the second compound, the third compound, and the fourth compound. However, the embodiment of the present disclosure is not limited thereto. When the content (e.g., amount) of the fourth compound satisfies the described content (e.g., amount), the energy delivery from the host to the first compound which is a light emitting dopant may be increased, thereby a luminous ratio may be improved, and thus the luminous efficiency of the emission layer EML may be improved. Then, the resulting product was further purified by sublimation purification to obtain final purity. The obtained compound was identified as Compound 135 through ESI-LCMS. ESI-LCMS: [M]+: 1512.3
The polycyclic compounds utilized in Examples and Comparative Examples are listed in Table 1.
Light emitting elements including the polycyclic compound of an example or Comparative Example Compound in the emission layer were manufactured as follows. The polycyclic compounds of examples were utilized as a dopant material for the emission layer to manufacture the light emitting elements of Examples 1 to 4, respectively. Comparative Example Compound C1 to C3 were utilized as a dopant material for the emission layer to manufacture the light emitting elements of Comparative Examples 1 to 3, respectively.
A glass substrate (made by Corning Co.), on which an ITO electrode of about 15 ohm per square centimeter (Ω/cm2) (about 1,200 angstrom (Å)) was formed as a first electrode, was cut to a size of about 50 millimeter (mm)×50 mm×0.7 mm, cleansed by ultrasonic waves utilizing isopropyl alcohol and pure water for about five minutes each, and then irradiated with ultraviolet rays for about 30 minutes and exposed to ozone and cleansed. The glass substrate was installed on a vacuum deposition apparatus.
On the first electrode, NPD (N,N′-Di(1-naphthyl)-N,N′-diphenyl-(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diamine) was deposited to form a 300 Å-thick hole injection layer, and on the hole injection layer, Compound H-1-1 was deposited to form a 200 Å-thick hole transport layer. Next, on the hole transport layer, CzSi was deposited to form a 100 Å-thick emission-auxiliary layer.
On the emission-auxiliary layer, a host mixture, a phosphorescent sensitizer, and a dopant were co-deposited at a weight ratio of about 85:14:1 to form a 350 Å-thick emission layer. As the host mixture, Compound HT1 which is a hole transporting host and Compound ETH66 which is an electron transporting host were provided at a weight ratio of about 5:5. As the phosphorescent sensitizer material, Compound AD-37 was utilized. As the dopant material, Example Compound or Comparative Example Compound was utilized.
On the emission layer, TSPO1 was deposited to form a 200 Å-thick hole blocking layer. Then, on the hole blocking layer, TPBI was deposited to form a 300 Å-thick electron transport layer, and then on the upper portion of the electron transport layer, LiF was deposited to form a 10 Å-thick electron injection layer. Next, on the upper portion of the electron injection layer, Al was deposited to form a 3,000 Å-thick second electrode, thereby manufacturing a light emitting element.
The compounds utilized to manufacture the light emitting element are as follows:
The light emitting elements of Examples and Comparative Examples were evaluated and the results are shown in Table 2. In the light emitting elements of Examples and Comparative Examples, each of driving voltage (V), luminous efficiency (candela per ampere per year (cd/A/y)), and emission wavelength at a current density of 1,000 (milliampere per square centimeter (mA/cm2)) was measured by utilizing Keithley MU 236 and a luminance meter PR650, and the results are shown in Table 2. The service life was expressed as a relative element service life by measuring the time taken to reach 95% brightness relative to an initial brightness and comparing the measurement with that of Comparative Example 3. The service life of Comparative Example 3 was set as 100%, and the service lives of Examples and Comparative Examples were expressed as a relative ratio in Table 2.
Referring to the results of Table 2, the light emitting elements of Examples and of Comparative Examples all emit blue light. In some embodiments, the light emitting elements of Examples 1 to 6 utilized the polycyclic compounds according to examples as a luminescent material, and thus exhibited low driving voltage characteristics as compared with the light emitting elements of Comparative Examples 1 to 3.
It may be seen that the light emitting elements of Examples 1 to 6 exhibit high luminous efficiency and long service life characteristics as compared with the light emitting elements of Comparative Examples 1 to 3. In particular, it may be seen that Examples 1 to 6 exhibit high luminous efficiency and significantly improved service life characteristics as compared with Comparative Examples 1 to 3. For example, the polycyclic compounds utilized in Examples may have a structure which includes, as a central structure, the pentacyclic fused ring containing two nitrogen atoms and one boron atom as ring-forming, and in which a substituent capable of suppressing Dexter energy transfer is linked to at least one of the two nitrogen atoms, thereby exhibiting excellent or suitable material stability. Accordingly, the light emitting elements of Examples including the polycyclic compounds of examples in the emission layers may concurrently (e.g., simultaneously) exhibit excellent or suitable luminous efficiency and service life characteristics as compared with those of Comparative Examples including Comparative Example Compounds in the emission layers.
The light emitting element of one or more embodiments may include the polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments, thereby exhibiting high efficiency and long service life characteristics.
The polycyclic compound of one or more embodiments may contribute to the improvement in the light efficiency and a long service life of the light emitting element.
In some embodiments, a display device of one or more embodiments may include the light emitting element which exhibits the described effects, thereby exhibiting characteristics that the quality of images and the display efficiency are improved.
