Claims
- 1. A light emitting panel assembly comprising a relatively thin and flat light emitting panel member having opposite ends and sides and top and bottom surfaces, a light transition area located at one of said ends, and multiple colored lights associated with said light transition area, the light from a plurality of said multiple colored lights being mixed within said light transition area to produce a desired color of light, and a pattern of light extracting deformities on said panel member for providing a desired light output from one of said surfaces, said multiple colored lights being oriented at different angles relative to each other to facilitate mixing of the light from a plurality of said multiple colored lights in said light transition area.
- 2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein side or end reflectors are provided at selected locations on said panel member.
- 3. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said multiple colored lights are mounted to said light transition area and at least one reflective surface is provided on said light transition area in close proximity to said multiple colored lights for causing a portion of the light emitted from a plurality of said multiple colored lights to be internally reflected by said reflective surface to produce a more uniform density of light across substantially the entire cross sectional area of said one end of said panel member.
- 4. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said multiple colored lights comprise two or more colored LEDs or a single LED with multiple colored chips which simultaneously emit different colored lights that are mixed within said light transition area.
- 5. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said multiple colored lights are insert molded or cast within said light transition area and at least one reflective surface is provided on said light transition area for aiding in mixing the light from a plurality of said multiple colored lights within said light transition area.
- 6. The assembly of claim 5 wherein said reflective surface is located on opposite sides of a plurality of said multiple colored lights.
- 7. The assembly of claim 5 wherein said reflective surface is shaped to cause internal reflection of a portion of the light emitted from a plurality of said multiple colored lights and redirect the different colored internally reflected light at a relatively low ray angle distribution into said one end of said panel member, whereby said panel member may be made thinner and longer than would otherwise be possible and still obtain a substantially uniform light output distribution from one of said surfaces of said panel member over substantially the entire area of one of said surfaces when said panel member is illuminated from said one end.
- 8. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the light from a plurality of said multiple colored lights is mixed within said light transition area to produce substantially white light which is conducted into said panel member.
- 9. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said multiple colored lights comprise a plurality of different colored LEDs which are selectively operable to produce a desired light output from said panel member.
- 10. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said multiple colored lights comprise a plurality of different colored LEDs which are selectively operable to produce different colored light outputs from said panel member.
- 11. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said multiple colored lights comprise a plurality of different colored LEDs which are selectively operable to produce a substantially uniform light output from said panel member.
- 12. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member includes a structural support for other parts or components.
- 13. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member is shaped to fit a particular application.
- 14. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member is shaped to fit a particular dental or medical application.
- 15. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member is rectangular in cross section and said top and bottom surfaces are correspondingly curved along their length and/or width to cause light to be emitted from said one of said surfaces of said panel member to fit a particular application.
- 16. A light emitting panel assembly comprising a relatively thin and flat light emitting panel member having opposite ends and sides and top and bottom surfaces, a light transition area located at one of said ends, and multiple colored lights associated with said light transition area, the light from a plurality of said multiple colored lights being mixed within said light transition area to produce a desired color of light, and a pattern of light extracting deformities on said panel member for providing a desired light output from one of said surfaces, said panel member including a structural support for other parts or components, said structural support comprising molded posts on said panel member.
- 17. A light emitting panel assembly comprising a relatively thin and flat light emitting panel member having opposite ends and sides and top and bottom surfaces, a light transition area located at one of said ends, a light source for supplying light to said light transition area for conduction through said panel member, and a pattern of light extracting deformities on said panel member for providing a desired light output from one of said surfaces, said panel member including a structural support for other parts or components, said structural support comprising molded posts on said panel member.
- 18. The assembly of claim 17 wherein said structural support is for an LCD.
- 19. The assembly of claim 17 wherein said structural support is for a printed circuit board.
