Claims

                - 1. A light emitting panel assembly comprising a light emitting panel member, a light transition area at one end of said panel member, a slot, cavity or opening in said light transition area, and a light source received within said slot, cavity or opening, said light source and said light transition area including mating elements for locating said light source in said slot, cavity or opening, said light source comprising a plurality of different colored LEDs which are selectively operable to produce a desired light output from said panel member.

                - 2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said slot, cavity or opening is in a back edge of said light transition area, said light source being slidably received into said slot, cavity or opening from said back edge.

                - 3. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said light source has a snap fit in said slot, cavity or opening.

                - 4. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member is shaped to fit a particular application.

                - 5. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member is shaped to fit a particular dental or medical application.

                - 6. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member is three dimensionally curved.

                - 7. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member includes a structural support for other parts or components.

                - 8. The assembly of claim 7 wherein said structural support comprises molded posts on said panel member.

                - 9. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member includes a structural support for an LCD.

                - 10. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member includes a structural support for a printed circuit board.

                - 11. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member is rectangular in cross section and is curved along its length to cause light to be emitted from said panel member to fit a particular application.

                - 12. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member is rectangular in cross section and is curved along its width to cause light to be emitted from said panel member to fit a particular application.

                - 13. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said mating elements comprise tabs on said light source and correspondingly shaped recesses extending into said light transition area to a depth for locating said light source in said slot, cavity or opening in said light transition area when said tabs are fully seated in said recesses.

                - 14. The assembly of claim 13 wherein said tabs extend substantially the full depth of said recesses.

                - 15. The assembly of claim 13 wherein said light source includes two said tabs laterally spaced from each other, and said light transition area includes two said recesses having the same spacing as said tabs for receipt of said tabs in said recesses.

                - 16. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said different colored LEDs are selectively operable to produce different colored light outputs from said panel member.

                - 17. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said different colored LEDs are selectively operable to produce a substantially uniform light output from said panel member.

                - 18. A light emitting panel assembly comprising a light emitting panel member, a light transition area at one end of said panel member, a slot, cavity or opening in said light transition area, and a light source received within said slot, cavity or opening, said light source and said light transition area including mating elements for locating said light source in said slot, cavity or opening, said mating elements comprising tabs on said light source and correspondingly shaped recesses extending into said light transition area to a depth for locating said light source in said slot, cavity or opening in said light transition area when said tabs are fully seated in said recesses, said light source being embedded, potted or bonded in said slot, cavity or opening in said light transition area so as to eliminate any air interface between said light source and said light transition area.
