Claims
- 1. A portable sign support arrangement, comprising:
a portable base including a leg support portion; a force accumulator tube of hollow predetermined cross-section supported by the base; a support tube; at least one of said force accumulator tube and said support tube having a hollow cross-section for telescopic engagement in a close-sized fit with the other of said force accumulator tube and said support tube so as to have a predetermined portion of said support tube extending beyond the free edge of said force accumulator tube; an insertion limiter cooperating with said force accumulator tube and said support tube so as to limit telescopic engagement of said support tube and said force accumulator tube, aligning said predetermined portion adjacent the free edge of said force accumulator tube; and said predetermined portion of said support tube including a plurality of weakening members adjacent the free edge of said force accumulator tube; so that a lateral force applied to said sign support arrangement generally at or below said weakening members is accumulated at said free edge of said force accumulator tube and is developed at said predetermined portion of said support tube to sever said support tube into upper and lower portions and to impart rotation to said upper portion.
- 2. The support arrangement of claim 1 wherein said force accumulator tube is joined to the leg support so as to be rigidly supported by the base.
- 3. The support arrangement of claim 1 wherein said force accumulator tube and has a free edge spaced from the base is coupled to the leg support by a spring member.
- 4. The support arrangement of claim 3 wherein said spring member includes at least one generally upright spring coil.
- 5. The support arrangement of claim 3 wherein said force accumulator tube is coupled to the spring coil through at least one bracket member secured to the force accumulator tube by at least one threaded fastener member.
- 6. The support arrangement of claim 5 further comprising a coil connector threadingly engaged with the spring coil and wherein said at least one bracket member is coupled to the coil connector by at least one threaded fastener member.
- 7. The support arrangement of claim 3 wherein said spring deflection member includes at least one generally horizontal spring coil.
- 8. The support arrangement of claim 1 wherein said support tube is coupled to the base by a coupler member telescopically engaged with said support tube, a portion of said coupler member comprising said force accumulator tube.
- 9. The support arrangement of claim 8 wherein the support accumulator tube is telescopically received within the coupler member.
- 10. The support arrangement of claim 8 wherein the coupler member is telescopically received within the support tube.
- 11. The support arrangement of claim 1 wherein said coupler member has at least two stepped portions of different cross-sectional size.
- 12. The support arrangement of claim 1 wherein said coupler member has a generally uniform cross-sectional size.
- 13. The support arrangement of claim 1 wherein said support tube is inserted within said force accumulator tube.
- 14. The support arrangement of claim 1 wherein said weakening members comprise apertures in said support tube.
- 15. The support arrangement of claim 14 wherein said support tube has four walls disposed between four outside corners and said weakening members comprise pairs of apertures in each wall, said apertures immediately adjacent said outside corners.
- 16. The support arrangement of claim 14 wherein said apertures comprise generally round holes.
- 17. The support arrangement of claim 14 wherein said apertures comprise generally triangular holes.
- 18. The support arrangement of claim 17 wherein said triangular holes define an acute angle directed toward one of said outside corners.
- 19. The support arrangement of claim 14 wherein said support tube has four walls disposed between four outside corners and said weakening members comprise notches formed in said outside corners.
- 20. The support arrangement of claim 19 wherein said notches extend through said support tube.
- 21. The support arrangement of claim 19 wherein said notches extend into the outer surface of said support tube, but do not extend through said support tube.
- 22. The support arrangement of claim 1 wherein said base includes springs for resilient mounting of said force accumulator tube.
- 23. The support arrangement of claim 22 wherein said springs are loaded with one of said torsional displacement and said bending displacement.
- 24. The support arrangement of claim 1 further comprising a coupler member having a lower portion coupled to said base and an upper portion comprising said force accumulator tube.
- 25. The support arrangement of claim 24 wherein said support tube is telescopically received within said force accumulator tube.
- 26. The support arrangement of claim 24 wherein said force accumulator tube is telescopically received in said support tube.
- 27. A portable folding sign arrangement, comprising:
a flexible message panel configurable in a collapsed storage position and in an unfolded position to assume a substantially flat message displaying configuration; a portable base; a force accumulator tube of hollow predetermined cross-section supported by the base and having a free edge spaced from the base; a support tube supporting the flexible message panel; at least one of said force accumulator tube and said support tube having a hollow cross-section for telescopic engagement in a close-sized fit with the other of said force accumulator tube and said support tube so as to have a predetermined portion of said support tube extending beyond the free edge of said force accumulator tube; an insertion limiter cooperating with said force accumulator tube and said support tube so as to limit telescopic engagement of said support tube and said force accumulator tube, aligning said predetermined portion adjacent the free edge of said force accumulator tube; said predetermined portion of said support tube including a plurality of weakening members adjacent the free edge of said force accumulator tube; and so that a lateral force applied to said sign support arrangement generally at or below said weakening members is accumulated at said free edge of said force accumulator tube and is developed at said predetermined portion of said support tube to sever said support tube into upper and lower portions and to impart rotation to said upper portion.
- 28. The sign support arrangement of claim 27 wherein said support tube is inserted within said force accumulator tube and said weakening members comprising apertures in said support tube.
- 29. The sign support arrangement of claim 28 wherein said support tube has four walls disposed between four outside corners and said weakening members comprise pairs of apertures in each wall, said apertures immediately adjacent said outside corners.
- 30. The sign support arrangement of claim 29 wherein said apertures comprise generally round holes.
- 31. The sign support arrangement of claim 29 wherein said apertures comprise generally triangular holes.
- 32. The sign support arrangement of claim 30 wherein said triangular holes define an acute angle directed toward one of said outside corners.
- 33. The sign support arrangement of claim 28 wherein said support tube has four walls disposed between four outside corners and said weakening members comprise notches formed in said outside corners.
- 34. The sign support arrangement of claim 33 wherein said notches extend through said support tube.
- 35. The sign support arrangement of claim 33 wherein said notches extend into the outer surface of said support tube, but do not extend through said support tube.
- 36. A portable sign support arrangement, comprising:
a portable base including a platform and a leg support portion; a force accumulator tube of hollow predetermined cross-section pivotally supported by the base; a support tube; at least one of said force accumulator tube and said support tube having a hollow cross-section for telescopic engagement in a close-sized fit with the other of said force accumulator tube and said support tube so as to have a predetermined portion of said support tube extending beyond the free edge of said force accumulator tube; a spring member resiliently coupling said force accumulator tube and said portable base; an insertion limiter cooperating with said force accumulator tube and said support tube so as to limit telescopic engagement of said support tube and said force accumulator tube, aligning said predetermined portion adjacent the free edge of said force accumulator tube; and said predetermined portion of said support tube including a plurality of weakening members adjacent the free edge of said force accumulator tube; so that a lateral force applied to said sign support arrangement generally at or below said weakening members is accumulated at said free edge of said force accumulator tube and is developed at said predetermined portion of said support tube to sever said support tube into upper and lower portions and to impart rotation to said upper portion.
- 37. The support arrangement of claim 36 wherein said spring member comprises a pair of generally upright spring coils.
- 38. The support arrangement of claim 37 wherein said force accumulator tube is coupled to the spring coils through bracket members secured to the force accumulator tube by a threaded fastener member.
- 39. The support arrangement of claim 36 wherein said weakening members comprise apertures in said support tube.
- 40. The support arrangement of claim 36 wherein said platform defines an aperture for receiving the lower end of said force accumulator tube, and said force accumulator tube passes through said platform.
- 41. The support arrangement of claim 40 further comprising an axle member supported by said portable base and extending through the lower end of said force accumulator tube to provide pivotal support therefor.
- 42. The support arrangement of claim 41 wherein said spring member comprises a pair of generally upright spring coils which cooperate with said axle member to limit motion of said force accumulator tube generally to pivoting in a plane.
- 43. The support arrangement of claim 42 wherein said force accumulator tube is disposed between said spring coils.
- 44. The support arrangement of claim 43 wherein said spring coils include lower ends coupled to said portable base and upper ends coupled to said force accumulator tube.
- 45. The support arrangement of claim 44 wherein the upper ends of said spring coils are coupled to said force accumulator tube by rigid bracket members.
