Claims
- 1. An armature assembly including
a plurality of windings; a base portion; a plurality of teeth extending from the base portion and about which the windings can be positioned, and wherein the plurality of teeth are spaced apart from each other to define slot openings at ends of and between adjacent teeth; and magnetic inserts shaped to enclose one or more of the slot openings between adjacent teeth.
- 2. The armature assembly of claim 1, wherein the base portion and plurality of teeth are formed of laminations.
- 3. The armature assembly of claim 1, wherein the plurality of teeth are spaced apart by a first dimension and the slot openings at the ends of and between adjacent teeth have a dimension which is approximately the same as the first dimension.
- 4. The armature assembly of claim 1, wherein the magnetic inserts are formed of laminations.
- 5. The armature assembly of claim 1, wherein the magnetic inserts are wedge shaped and the ends of the plurality of teeth are shaped to couple with the wedge shape of the magnetic inserts.
- 6. The armature assembly of claim 5 wherein a dovetail arrangement is provided between the ends of the plurality of teeth and the wedge shaped magnetic inserts.
- 7. The armature assembly of claim 5 wherein the magnetic inserts have a trapezoidal cross section.
- 8. The armature assembly of claim 3, wherein the ends of the plurality of teeth are notched and the magnetic inserts are shaped to couple to the notched ends of the plurality of teeth.
- 9. The armature assembly of claim 7 further including a mounting bracket which extends beyond outer edges of the base portion, and wherein the mounting bracket is coupled to the base portion of the armature assembly in a dovetail arrangement.
- 10. The armature assembly of claim 9 wherein the base portion has a thickness and the mounting bracket has a thickness in such a way to create proper combined cross-section.
- 11. An armature assembly including
a plurality of windings; a base portion; a plurality of teeth extending from the base portion and about which the windings can be positioned; and a mounting bracket formed of magnetic material and shaped to couple with the base portion and to extend beyond outer edges of the base portion.
- 12. An armature assembly including
a plurality of windings, a base portion, a plurality of teeth extending from the base portion and about which the windings can be positioned, and in which the plurality of teeth are spaced apart from each other so as to define slot openings at ends of and between adjacent teeth, and magnetic inserts having a wedge shape and fitted into notches formed in the adjacent teeth to enclose the slot openings between adjacent teeth.
- 13. A stack assembly for use in an armature assembly of the type including a plurality of windings, the stack assembly comprising
a base portion; a plurality of teeth extending from the base portion and about which the windings can be positioned; and wherein the plurality of teeth are spaced apart from each other so as to define slot openings at ends of and between adjacent teeth, and magnetic inserts shaped to enclose one or more of the slot openings between adjacent teeth.
- 14. The stack assembly of claim 13 wherein, the base portion and plurality of teeth are formed of laminations.
- 15. The stack assembly of claim 13, wherein the plurality of teeth are spaced apart by a first dimension and the slot openings at the ends of and between adjacent teeth have a dimension which is approximately the same as the first dimension.
- 16. The stack assembly of claim 13, wherein the magnetic inserts are formed of laminations.
- 17. The stack assembly of claim 13, wherein the magnetic inserts are wedge shaped and the ends of the plurality of teeth are shaped to couple with the wedge shape of the magnetic inserts.
- 18. The stack assembly of claim 17 wherein a dovetail arrangement is provided between the ends of the plurality of teeth and the wedge shaped magnetic inserts.
- 19. The stack assembly of claim 17 wherein the magnetic inserts have a trapezoidal cross section.
- 20. The stack assembly of claim 15, wherein the ends of the plurality of teeth are notched and the magnetic inserts are shaped to couple to the notched ends of the plurality of teeth.
- 21. The stack assembly of claim 19 further including a magnetic mounting bracket which extends beyond outer edges of the base portion, and wherein the mounting bracket is coupled to the base portion of the armature assembly in a dovetail arrangement.
- 22. The stack assembly of claim 21 wherein the base portion has a thickness and the mounting bracket has a thickness selected so that the combined thickness is sufficient for conduction of magnetic flux.
- 23. A stack assembly for use in an armature assembly which includes a plurality of windings, the stack assembly comprising
a base portion; a plurality of teeth extending from the base portion and about which the windings can be positioned; and a mounting bracket formed of magnetic material and shaped to couple with the base portion and to extend beyond outer edges of the base portion.
- 24. A stack assembly of the type used in an armature assembly which includes a plurality of windings, the stack assembly comprising
a base portion; a plurality of teeth extending from the base portion and about which the windings can be positioned, and in which the plurality of teeth are spaced apart from each other so as to define slot openings at ends of and between adjacent teeth; and magnetic inserts in the shape of wedges are fitted into notches formed in the adjacent teeth to enclose the slot openings between adjacent teeth.
- 25. A linear brushless DC motor comprising
a field assembly; and an armature assembly positioned to be separated from the field assembly by a gap, the armature assembly including
a magnetic mounting bracket; a stack assembly which includes
a base portion; a plurality of teeth extending from the base portion, wherein the plurality of teeth are spaced apart from each other to define slot openings at ends of and between adjacent teeth; and magnetic inserts in the shape of wedges fitted into notches formed in the adjacent teeth to enclose the slot openings between adjacent teeth; and a plurality of windings positioned about the plurality of teeth of the stack assembly.
