Claims
- 1. A non-flammable linear non-graphitic carbonaceous polymeric fiber having improved elongability and processability which comprises a non-graphitic heat treated irreversibly set linear stabilized polyacrylonitrile based fiber having an LOI greater than 40, said fiber having an elongability of about 2.5 to 9% and a pseudoelongability of about zero.
- 2. The fiber of claim 1 wherein said stabilized polyacrylonitrile based fiber is selected from the group consisting of acrylonitrile homopolymers, acrylonitrile copolymers and acrylonitrile terpolymers.
- 3. The fiber of claim 2 wherein said copolymers and terpolymers contain at least 85 mole percent acrylic units and up to 15 mole percent of one or more monovinyl units.
- 4. The fiber of claim 1, wherein the fiber has a carbon content less than 85 percent, a nitrogen content of more than 18%, and wherein said fiber is electrically nonconductive, does not possess any electrostatic dissipating characteristics, and has an electrical resistance of greater than 4.times.10.sup.3 ohms/cm, when measured on a 6K tow of fiber having a single fiber diameter of 4 to 20 microns.
- 5. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the fiber has a carbon content of greater than 65 percent and a nitrogen content of about 14 to 18%, low electrical conductivity and electrostatic dissipating characteristics, an electrical resistance of from 4.times.10.sup.6 to 4.times.10.sup.3 ohms/cm when measured on a 6K tow of fiber having a single fiber diameter of 4 to 20 microns, and an elongation of about 4 to 9%.
- 6. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the fiber have a carbon content of at least 85 percent, a nitrogen content of at least 5%, is electrically conductive, has an electrical resistance of less than 4.times.10.sup.3 ohms/cm when measured on a 6K tow of fibers having a single fiber diameter of 4 to 20 microns, and has an elongation of about 2.5 to 4%.
- 7. The fiber of claim 1 wherein said fiber has a strand tenacity of about 2 to 9 g/d.
