Claims
- 1. A linear motor comprising:
- a plurality of armature windings defining a path;
- a stage movable on said path;
- said stage including n motor magnets facing said plurality of armature windings;
- said plurality of motor magnets having alternating magnetic polarities in faces thereof facing said plurality of armature windings;
- said n motor magnets occupying a span S;
- m of said plurality of armature windings occupying said span S;
- m.noteq.n;
- each of said plurality of armature windings including a switch for connecting drive power thereto;
- means for switching drive power to those of said plurality of armature windings facing said n motor magnets; and
- automatic means for performing said switching only when an end one of said n magnets in said span S is substantially centered on one of said armature windings, whereby switching is performed at minimum current, with the generation of minimum switching noise.
- 2. A linear motor according to claim 1, wherein said automatic means includes means for switching power to an armature winding at a first end of said span substantially simultaneously with removing power from a second armature winding at a second end of said span.
- 3. A linear motor according to claim 1, wherein said means for switching includes:
- a magnetically actuated sensor aligned with a center of each armature winding;
- each sensor controlling its respective switch to an on condition when exposed to a magnetic field, and controlling its respective switch to an off condition in an absence of said magnetic field;
- a switch control magnet movable with said stage;
- said switch control magnet having a length substantially equal to said span S;
- said control magnet producing said magnetic field; and
- said switch control magnet being substantially aligned with said span S, whereby armature windings are automatically turned on when they pass within said span S and are automatically turned off as they pass out of said span S.
- 4. A linear motor according to claim 1, wherein n=5+4k where k is an integer.
- 5. A linear motor according to claim 4, wherein m=n-1.
- 6. A linear motor according to claim 1, wherein m=n-1.
- 7. A linear motor according to claim 1, wherein said armature windings contain substantially no magnetic material.
- 8. A linear motor according to claim 1, wherein said armature windings are wound with magnetic material.
