Claims
- 1. A liner hanger apparatus, for use in a subterranean wellbore, comprising:
- a tubular body defining a generally cylindrical exterior surface;
- a gripping assembly disposed circumferentially about at least a portion of said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body, operable in a plurality of operating modes including a radially-reduced running mode of operation and a radially-enlarged gripping mode of operation, wherein, in switching between said running and gripping modes of operation, said tubular body is axially displaced relative to at least a portion of said gripping assembly; and
- wherein said gripping assembly includes at least one ring-shaped component which is secured to said tubular body by a thermally-set non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling between an interior surface of said at least one ring-shaped component and a portion of said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body.
- 2. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:
- said at least one ring-shaped component of said gripping assembly at least in-part retains portions of said gripping assembly in a fixed position relative to said tubular body during said running mode of operation and at least in-part retains portions of said gripping assembly in a fixed position relative to said tubular body during said gripping mode of operation.
- 3. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:
- said thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling between said at least one ring-shaped component of said gripping assembly and said tubular body at least in-part transfers an axial load from said tubular body to said gripping assembly during said radially-enlarged gripping mode of operation.
- 4. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:
- after make-up of said thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling, maintaining said at least one ring-shaped component and said tubular body in substantially similar thermal conditions prevents decoupling of said thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling.
- 5. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:
- during assembly operations said at least one ring-shaped component of said gripping assembly is temporarily oversized with respect to corresponding regions on said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body to allow make-up of said thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling, but which shrink to prevent decoupling of said thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling.
- 6. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:
- said gripping assembly is secured in a selected axial position upon said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body substantially entirely by said at least one ring-shaped component.
- 7. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:
- said gripping assembly is secured upon said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body substantially entirely by said at least one ring-shaped component without requiring weldment between components of said gripping assembly and said tubular body.
- 8. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:
- said gripping assembly includes an upper ring-shaped retainer component and a lower ring-shaped retainer component, with the remaining gripping assembly components retained in a selected axial position upon said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body intermediate said upper and lower ring-shaped retainer components, and with at least said upper ring-shaped component of said gripping assembly providing a thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling with said tubular body which limits upward axial displacement of said gripping assembly relative to said tubular body.
- 9. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 8, wherein:
- said lower ring-shaped component of said gripping assembly also provides a thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling with said tubular body which limits downward axial displacement of said gripping assembly relative to said tubular body.
- 10. A liner hanger apparatus, for use in a wellbore with at least one tubular member disposed therein defining a wellbore surface, comprising:
- a tubular body including a generally cylindrical exterior surface which defines a selected outer diameter dimension for said tubular body;
- a gripping assembly disposed circumferentially about at least a portion of said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body, operable in a plurality of operating modes including a radially-reduced running mode of operation and a radially-enlarged gripping mode of operation, wherein, in switching between said running and gripping modes of operation, said tubular body is axially displaced relative to at least a portion of said gripping assembly, said gripping assembly including:
- at least one cone ring, each having a tapered exterior surface, extending from a radially narrow end to a radially enlarged end, and an interior surface defining a selected inner diameter dimension;
- a plurality of gripping slips, each having an exterior surface defining a plurality of gripping teeth and an interior surface for sliding engagement with said tapered exterior surface of selected ones of said at least one cone ring;
- a guide assembly for retaining said plurality of gripping slips in selected radial positions relative to said tubular body while allowing relative axial movement between said tubular body and said plurality of gripping slips;
- wherein, during assembly, thermal energy is applied to said at least one cone ring to expand temporarily said selected inner diameter dimension of said at least one cone ring to an expansion dimension which is greater than said selected outer diameter dimension of said tubular body to allow said at least one cone ring to be slidably urged about said tubular body;
- wherein, dissipation of said thermal energy from said at least one cone ring allows return of said at least one cone ring toward said selected inner diameter dimension, creating a shrink-fit coupling between said at least one cone ring and said tubular body.
- 11. A liner hanger apparatus, according to claim 10, wherein:
- said gripping assembly is secured in a selected axial position upon said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body substantially entirely by said at least cone ring.
- 12. A liner hanger apparatus, according to claim 10, wherein:
- said gripping assembly is secured to said tubular body substantially entirely by said at least one cone ring without requiring weldment between components of said gripping assembly and said tubular body.
- 13. A liner hanger apparatus, according to claim 10, wherein:
- said gripping assembly further includes at least one ring-shaped retainer member; and
- said gripping assembly is retained in a selected axial position upon said generally cylindrical exterior surface substantially intermediate said at least one cone ring and said at least one ring-shaped retainer member.
- 14. A liner hanger apparatus, for use in a subterranean wellbore, comprising:
- a tubular body defining a generally cylindrical exterior surface;
- a gripping assembly disposed circumferentially about at least a portion of said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body, operable in a plurality of operating modes including a radially-reduced running mode of operation and a radially-enlarged gripping mode of operation, wherein, in switching between said running and gripping modes of operation, said tubular body is axially displaced relative to at least a portion of said gripping assembly;
- said gripping assembly including at least one ring-shaped component which is secured to said tubular body at a thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling interface of an interior surface of said at least one ring-shaped component and a portion of said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body;
- wherein, at said thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling interface, at least one of said exterior surface of said tubular body and said interior surface of said at least one ring-shaped component includes a plurality of groove members and a plurality of land members, with at least said land members in interference engagement with a radially aligned engagement surface.
- 15. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 14, wherein:
- said at least one ring-shaped component of said gripping assembly at least in-part retains portions of said gripping assembly in a fixed position relative to said tubular body during said running mode of operation and at least in-part retains portions of said gripping assembly in a fixed position relative to said tubular body during said gripping mode of operation.
- 16. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 14, wherein:
- after make-up of said thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling, maintaining said at least one ring-shaped component and said tubular body in substantially similar thermal conditions prevents decoupling of said thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling.
- 17. A liner hanger apparatus, for use in a subterranean wellbore, comprising:
- a tubular body defining a generally cylindrical exterior surface;
- a gripping assembly disposed circumferentially about at least a portion of said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body, operable in a plurality of operating modes including a radially-reduced running mode of operation and a radially-enlarged gripping mode of operation, wherein, in switching between said running and gripping modes of operation, said tubular body is axially displaced relative to at least a portion of said gripping assembly;
- said gripping assembly including at least one ring-shaped component which is secured to said tubular body by at least one groove-and-land thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling between a plurality of groove members and land members disposed on an interior surface of said at least one ring-shaped component and a plurality of groove members and land members disposed on a portion of said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body; and
- said groove-and-land thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling including a plurality of said land members which are oversized with respect to a plurality of said groove members to provide a permanent coupling.
- 18. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 17, wherein:
- said groove-and-land thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling includes a plurality of land members which are in interference fitting relation with a plurality of groove members to provide a permanent coupling.
- 19. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 17, wherein:
- said groove-and-land thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling between said at least one ring-shaped component of said gripping assembly and said tubular body at least in-part transfers an axial load from said tubular body to said gripping assembly during said gripping mode of operation.
- 20. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 17, wherein:
- said at least one ring-shaped component of said gripping assembly at least in-part retains portions of said gripping assembly in a fixed position relative to said tubular body during said running mode of operation and at least in-part retains portions of said gripping assembly in a fixed position relative to said tubular body during said gripping mode of operation.
- 21. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 17, wherein:
- after make-up of said groove-and-land thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling, maintaining said at least one ring-shaped component and said tubular body in substantially similar thermal conditions prevents decoupling of said groove-and-land thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling.
- 22. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 17, wherein:
- said plurality of groove members and land members disposed on an interior surface of said at least one ring-shaped component are threads disposed on said interior surface of said at least one ring-shaped component; and
- said plurality of groove members and land members disposed on a portion of said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body are threads disposed on a portion of said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body.
- 23. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 22, wherein:
- after make-up of said thermally-set, non-screwed, shrink-fit coupling, maintaining said at least one ring-shaped component and said tubular body is substantially similar thermal conditions prevents decoupling of said at least one ring-shaped component and said tubular body.
- 24. A liner hanger apparatus, for use in a wellbore with at least one tubular member disposed therein defining a wellbore surface, comprising:
- a tubular body defining a generally cylindrical exterior surface;
- a gripping assembly disposed circumferentially about at least a portion of said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said tubular body, operable in a plurality of operating modes including a radially-reduced running mode of operation and a radially-enlarged gripping mode of operation, wherein, in switching between said running and gripping modes of operation, said tubular body is axially displaced relative to at least a portion of said gripping assembly;
- said gripping assembly including:
- at least one cone ring, each having a tapered exterior surface, extending from a narrow end to an enlarged end, and an interior surface with a plurality of threads defined by crest and root portions;
- a plurality of gripping slips, each having an exterior surface defining a plurality of gripping teeth and an interior surface for sliding engagement with said at least one cone ring;
- a guide assembly for retaining said plurality of gripping slips in selected radial positions relative to said tubular body while allowing relative axial movement between said tubular body and said plurality of gripping slips;
- said tubular body including at least one externally-threaded region corresponding to each of said at least one cone ring, each of said at least one externally-threaded region including a plurality of threads defined by crest and root portions;
- wherein a plurality of said crest portions of said threads of said at least one externally-threaded region of said tubular body are larger than a plurality of corresponding root portions of said threads of said at least one cone ring;
- wherein, during assembly, thermal energy is applied to said at least one cone ring to expand said at least one cone ring to allow sliding make-up of said at least one cone ring and said tubular body;
- wherein, cooling of said at least one cone ring creates a shrink fit between said plurality of threads of said at least one cone ring and said at least one externally-threaded region of said tubular body.
- 25. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 24, wherein:
- said at least one cone ring comprises upper and lower cone rings which are secured by a shrink-fit threaded coupling with upper and lower externally-threaded regions on said tubular body.
- 26. A liner hanger apparatus according to claim 24, wherein:
- said gripping assembly is secured to said tubular body without weldments between said gripping assembly and said tubular body.
- 27. A liner hanger assembly according to claim 24, wherein:
- during a gripping mode of operation, an axial load on said tubular body is transferred through said at least one externally-threaded region of said tubular body, said plurality of threads on said interior surface of said at least one cone ring, said at least one cone ring, said plurality of gripping slips, to said wellbore surface defined by said at least one tubular member.
- 28. A liner hanger apparatus kit, for assembly with a wellbore tubular disposed at a remote location, said wellbore tubular having a generally cylindrical exterior surface which defines a selected outer diameter, comprising:
- at least one cone ring member having a tapered exterior surface and a generally cylindrical interior surface;
- a gripping slip assembly which is concentrically disposable about at least a portion of said wellbore tubular; and
- wherein for at least one of said at least one cone ring said generally cylindrical interior surface defines a selected inner diameter which is smaller than said selected outer diameter of said wellbore tubular, which can be heated to expand to allow sliding makeup of said at least one cone ring and said wellbore tubular, wherein cooling of said cone ring causes a shrink fit between said at least one cone ring and said wellbore tubular.
- 29. A liner hanger apparatus kit, for assembly with a wellbore tubular disposed at a remote location, said wellbore tubular having a generally cylindrical exterior surface, said wellbore tubular including upper and lower threads of preselected crest and root dimensions, comprising:
- at least one cone ring member having a tapered exterior surface, and a generally cylindrical interior surface with a plurality of threads formed thereon of preselected crest and root dimensions;
- a gripping slip assembly which is concentrically disposable about at least a portion of said threaded wellbore tubular;
- a retainer ring having a generally cylindrical interior surface with a plurality of threads formed thereon of preselected crest and root dimensions;
- wherein said threads of said at least one cone ring and said retainer ring are dimensioned to include a plurality of crest portions which are oversized with respect to corresponding root portions of said upper and lower threads on said generally cylindrical exterior surface of said wellbore tubular, but which can be heated to expand to allow sliding make-up of said at least one cone ring with said wellbore tubular at said upper threads, and sliding make-up of said retainer ring with said wellbore tubular at said lower threads, with said gripping assembly disposed therebetween;
- wherein cooling of said at least one cone ring and said at least one retainer ring causes a permanent shrink fit between said at least one cone ring, said retainer ring, and said wellbore tubular.
