Claims
- 1. A closure suitable for mounting onto a container, said closure being molded in one piece from a plastic resilient material and comprising a top portion and a skirt portion depending from the underside of the top portion, characterized in that an annular sealing rib projects downwardly from the underside of the top portion, said rib including a first portion having a substantially cylindrical inner surface, the first portion being contiguous with the top portion and lying radially inward of the skirt, and a second, frusto-conical, portion contiguous with the end of the first portion distal to the top portion and extending radially inwardly to terminate in a circular free edge, the first portion having an internal diameter relative to the external diameter of the neck of the container to which the closure is to be attached such that during engagement of the closure with the neck, the second, frusto-conical, portion will be engaged by the free end of the neck and folded back against the substantially cylindrical inner surface of the first portion of the rib to form a seal between at least an outer surface of the neck of the container and the closure.
- 2. The closure of claim 1, and further wherein the rib has a shape, size and material of construction such that, during final movement attaching the closure to the container, said rib is disposed in a sealing relation between the top surface of said free end of the neck of the container and the underside of the top portion.
- 3. A closure as defined in claim 2 and further wherein the undersurface of the top portion is defined in part by a second annular rib depending from the underside of the top portion of the closure.
- 4. A closure as defined in claim 3 and further wherein the second rib extends radially inwardly and away from said top portion and is tapered in cross-section.
- 5. A closure as defined in claim 4 wherein said first portion of the rib joins said top portion at a position radially displaced from said skirt so as to define a generally annular gap between said first portion and the skirt.
- 6. A closure for a container, said closure being molded in one piece from a resilient plastic material and comprising a top portion and a skirt portion depending from the underside of the top portion, said closure further having means for mounting the closure onto a container, characterized in that an annular sealing rib projects downwardly from the underside of the top portion, said rib including a first portion having a substantially cylindrical inner surface, the first portion being contiguous with the top portion and lying radially inward of the skirt, and a second, frusto-conical, portion contiguous with the end of the first portion distal to the top portion and extending radially inwardly to terminate in a circular free edge, the first portion having an internal diameter relative to the external diameter of the neck of the container to which the closure is to be attached such that during engagement of the closure with the neck, the second, frusto-conical, portion will be engaged by the free end of the neck and folded back against the substantially cylindrical inner surface of the first portion of the rib to form a gas-tight seal between at least an outer surface of the neck of the container and the closure.
- 7. The closure of claim 6, and further wherein the rib has a shape, size and material of construction such that, during final movement attaching the closure to the container, said rib is disposed in a sealing relation between the top surface of said free end of the neck of the container and the underside of the top portion.
- 8. A closure as defined in claim 6 and further wherein the undersurface of the top portion is defined in part by a second annular rib depending from the underside of the top portion of the closure.
- 9. A closure as defined in claim 6 and further wherein the second rib extends radially inwardly and away from said top portion and is tapered in cross-section.
- 10. A closure as defined in claim 6 wherein said first portion of the rib joins said top portion at a position radially displaced from said skirt so as to define a generally annular gap between said first portion and the skirt.
- 11. The closure of claim 10, and further wherein the skirt portion has means for mounting the closure onto a container.
- 12. The closure of claim 11, and further wherein the rib has a shape, size and material of construction such that, during final movement attaching the closure to the container, said rib is disposed in a sealing relation between the top surface of said free end of the neck of the container and the underside of the top portion.
- 13. A closure as defined in claim 11 and further wherein the undersurface of the top portion is defined in part by a second annular rib depending from the underside of the top portion of the closure.
- 14. A closure as defined in claim 11 and further wherein the second rib extends radially inwardly and away from said top portion and is tapered in cross-section.
- 15. A closure as defined in claim 11 wherein said first portion of the rib joins said top portion at a position radially displaced from said skirt so as to define a generally annular gap between said first portion and the skirt.
- 16. The closure of claim 11, and further wherein the means for mounting the closure onto a container are disposed on the inner surface of the skirt portion.
- 17. The closure of claim 16, and further wherein the rib has a shape, size and material of construction such that, during final movement attaching the closure to the container, said rib is disposed in a sealing relation between the top surface of said free end of the neck of the container and the underside of the top portion to thereby position.
- 18. A closure as defined in claim 16 and further wherein the undersurface of the top portion is defined in part by a second annular rib depending from the underside of the top portion of the closure.
- 19. A closure as defined in claim 16 and further wherein the second rib extends radially inwardly and away from said top portion and is tapered in cross-section.
- 20. A closure as defined in claim 16 wherein said first portion of the rib joins said top portion at a position radially displaced from said skirt so as to define a generally annular gap between said first portion and the skirt.
- 21. A closure for a container, said closure being molded in one piece from a resilient plastic material and comprising a top portion and a skirt portion depending from the underside of the top portion, said closure further having means for cooperating with means on a container to thereby mount the closure on the container, characterized in that an annular sealing rib projects downwardly from the underside of the top portion, said rib including a first portion having a substantially cylindrical inner surface, the first portion being contiguous with the top portion and lying radially inward of the skirt, and a second, frusto-conical, portion contiguous with the end of the first portion distal to the top portion and extending radially inwardly to terminate in a circular free edge, the first portion having an internal diameter relative to the external diameter of the neck of the container to which the closure is to be attached such that during engagement of the closure with the neck, the second, frusto-conical, portion will be engaged by the free end of the neck and folded back against the substantially cylindrical inner surface of the first portion of the rib to form a gas-tight seal between at least an outer surface of the neck of the container and the closure.
- 22. The closure of claim 21, and further wherein the rib has a shape, size and material of construction such that, during final movement attaching the closure to the container, said rib is disposed in a sealing relation between the top surface of said free end of the neck of the container and the underside of the top portion.
- 23. A closure as defined in claim 21 and further wherein the undersurface of the top portion is defined in part by a second annular rib depending from the underside of the top portion of the closure.
- 24. A closure as defined in claim 21 and further wherein the second rib extends radially inwardly and away from said top portion and is tapered in cross-section.
- 25. A closure as defined in claim 21 wherein said first portion of the rib joins said top portion at a position radially displaced from said skirt so as to define a generally annular gap between said first portion and the skirt.
- 26. The closure of claim 21 and further wherein the cooperative means on the closure are disposed on the skirt of the closure.
- 27. The closure of claim 26, and further wherein the rib has a shape, size and material of construction such that, during final movement attaching the closure to the container, said rib is disposed in a sealing relation between the top surface of said free end of the neck of the container and the underside of the top portion.
- 28. A closure as defined in claim 26 and further wherein the undersurface of the top portion is defined in part by a second annular rib depending from the underside of the top portion of the closure.
- 29. A closure as defined in claim 26 and further wherein the second rib extends radially inwardly and away from said top portion and is tapered in cross-section.
- 30. A closure as defined in claim 26 wherein said first portion of the rib joins said top portion at a position radially displaced from said skirt so as to define a generally annular gap between said first portion and the skirt.
- 31. The closure of claim 26 and further wherein the cooperative means on the closure are disposed on the inner surface of the skirt of the closure.
- 32. The closure of claim 31, and further wherein the rib has a shape, size and material of construction such that, during final movement attaching the closure to the container, said rib is disposed in a sealing relation between the top surface of said free end of the neck of the container and the underside of the top portion.
- 33. A closure as defined in claim 31 and further wherein the undersurface of the top portion is defined in part by a second annular rib depending from the underside of the top portion of the closure.
- 34. A closure as defined in claim 31 and further wherein the second rib extends radially inwardly and away from said top portion and is tapered in cross-section.
- 35. A closure as defined in claim 31 wherein said first portion of the rib joins said top portion at a position radially displaced from said skirt so as to define a generally annular gap between said first portion and the skirt.
- 36. A closure for a pressurized container, said closure being molded in one piece from a plastic resilient material and comprising a top portion and a skirt portion depending from the underside of the top portion, said closure further having means for mounting the closure to a container, which means together with a sealing rib depending from the underside of the top portion hermetically seal a container to which the closure is mounted, characterized in that an annular sealing rib projects downwardly from the underside of the top portion, said rib including a first portion having a substantially cylindrical inner surface, the first portion being contiguous with the top portion and lying radially inward of the skirt, and a second, frusto-conical, portion contiguous with the end of the first portion distal to the top portion and extending radially inwardly to terminate in a circular free edge, the first portion having an internal diameter relative to the external diameter of the neck of the container to which the closure is to be attached such that during engagement of the closure with the neck, the second, frusto-conical, portion will be engaged by the free end of the neck and folded back against the substantially cylindrical inner surface of the first portion of the rib to form a gas-tight seal between at least an outer surface of the neck of the container and the closure.
- 37. The closure of claim 36, and further wherein the rib has a shape, size and material of construction such that, during final movement attaching the closure to the container, said rib is disposed in a sealing relation between the top surface of said free end of the neck of the container and the underside of the top portion.
- 38. A closure as defined in claim 36 and further wherein the undersurface of the top portion is defined in part by a second annular rib depending from the underside of the top portion of the closure.
- 39. A closure as defined in claim 36 and further wherein the second rib extends radially inwardly and away from said top portion and is tapered in cross-section.
- 40. A closure as defined in claim 36 wherein said first portion of the rib joins said top portion at a position radially displaced from said skirt so as to define a generally annular gap between said first portion and the skirt.
- 41. The closure of claim 36, and further wherein the cooperative means on the closure are disposed on the skirt of the closure.
- 42. The closure of claim 41, and further wherein the rib has a shape, size and material of construction such that, during final movement attaching the closure to the container, said rib is disposed in a sealing relation between the top surface of said free end of the neck of the container and the underside of the top portion.
- 43. A closure as defined in claim 41 and further wherein the undersurface of the top portion is defined in part by a second annular rib depending from the underside of the top portion of the closure.
- 44. A closure as defined in claim 41 and further wherein the second rib extends radially inwardly and away from said top portion and is tapered in cross-section.
- 45. A closure as defined in claim 41 wherein said first portion of the rib joins said top portion at a position radially displaced from said skirt so as to define a generally annular gap between said first portion and the skirt.
- 46. The closure of claim 41, and further wherein the cooperative means on the closure are disposed on the inner surface of the skirt.
- 47. The closure of claim 46, and further wherein the rib has a shape, size and material of construction such that, during final movement attaching the closure to the container, said rib is disposed in a sealing relation between the top surface of said free end of the neck of the container and the underside of the top portion.
- 48. A closure as defined in claim 46 and further wherein the undersurface of the top portion is defined in part by a second annular rib depending from the underside of the top portion of the closure.
- 49. A closure as defined in claim 46 and further wherein the second rib extends radially inwardly and away from said top portion and is tapered in cross-section.
- 50. A closure as defined in claim 46 wherein said first portion of the rib joins said top portion at a position radially displaced from said skirt so as to define a generally annular gap between said first portion and the skirt.
