Claims
- 1. A compound represented by the following general formula (1): ##STR34## wherein H.sub.1, H.sub.2, H.sub.3, H.sub.4, H.sub.5, H.sub.6, H.sub.7 and H.sub.8 represent independently a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, provided that at least one of them is a halogen atom; R.sub.1 represents a moiety which is an alkyl group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms provided that one or more methylene groups (--CH.sub.2 --) which are not successive in the alkyl group are replaced with an oxygen atom (--O--) in the form of ether, and provided that an alkoxy group having 1 to 19 carbon atoms is exluded; Y.sub.1 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and one or more methylene groups in Y.sub.1 independently may be replaced with an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, a dihydroxysilyl group, a dimethylsilylene group, --CH.dbd.CH-- or --C.tbd.C--; X.sub.1, X.sub.2 and X.sub.3 represent independently a covalent bond, a 1,2-ethylene group or a 1,4-butylene group.
- 2. The compound according to claim 1 wherein Y.sub.1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms.
- 3. The compound according to claim 1 wherein H.sub.1, H.sub.2, H.sub.3, H.sub.4, H.sub.5, H.sub.6, H.sub.7 and H.sub.8 represent independently a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, provided that at least one of them is a fluorine atom.
- 4. The compound according to claim 1 wherein X.sub.1, X.sub.2 and X.sub.3 represent independently a covalent bond.
- 5. The compound according to claim 1 wherein any one of X.sub.1, X.sub.2 and X.sub.3 represents a 1,2-ethylene group.
- 6. A liquid crystal composition comprising at least one compound according to claim 1.
- 7. A liquid crystal composition comprising at least one compound according to claim 1 as a first component, and as a second component at least one compound selected from the group consisting of the compounds of the formula (2), (3) or (4): ##STR35## wherein R.sub.2 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; Y.sub.2 represents a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom, OCF.sub.3, OCF.sub.2 H, CF.sub.3, CF.sub.2 H or CFH.sub.2 ; L.sub.1, L.sub.2, L.sub.3 and L.sub.4 represent independently a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom; Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 represent independently a 1,2-ethylene group, --CH.dbd.CH-- or a covalent bond; and a is 1 or 2.
- 8. A liquid crystal composition comprising at least one compound according to claim 1 as a first component, and as a second component at least one compound selected from the group consisting of the compounds of the formula (5), (6), (7), (8) or (9): ##STR36## wherein R.sub.3 is a fluorine atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms, and any methylene group in said alkyl or alkenyl group may be replaced by one or more oxygen atoms (--O--), provided that two or more successive methylene groups are not replaced by oxygen atoms; ring B represents 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl; ring C represents 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; ring D represents 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z.sub.3 represents a 1,2-ethylene group, --COO-- or a covalent bond; L.sub.5 and L.sub.6 represent independently a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom; and b and c represent independently 0 or 1, ##STR37## wherein R.sub.4 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; L.sub.7 represents a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom; and d represents 0 or 1, ##STR38## wherein R.sub.5 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, ring E and ring F represent independently 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z.sub.4 and Z.sub.5 represent independently --COO-- or a covalent bond; Z.sub.6 represents --COO-- or --C.tbd.C--; L.sub.8 and L.sub.9 represent independently a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom; Y.sub.3 represents a fluorine atom, OCF.sub.3, OCF.sub.2 H, CF.sub.3, CF.sub.2 H or CFH.sub.2 ; and e, f and g represent independently 0 or 1, ##STR39## wherein R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 represent independently an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group having 2 to 10 atoms, and any methylene group in said alkyl or alkenyl group may be replaced by one or more oxygen atoms, provided that two or more successive methylene groups are not replaced by oxygen atoms; ring H represents 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; ring I represents 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z.sub.6 represents --C.tbd.C--, --COO--, a 1,2-ethylene group, --CH.dbd.CH--C.tbd.C-- or a covalent bond; and Z.sub.7 represents --COO-- or a covalent bond, ##STR40## wherein R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 represent independently an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group having 2 to 10 atoms, and any methylene group in said alkyl or alkenyl group may be replaced by one or more oxygen atoms, provided that two or more successive methylene groups are not replaced by oxygen atoms; ring J represents 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; ring K represents 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene wherein at least one or more hydrogen atoms on the ring are optionally substituted by fluorine atoms, or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; ring L represents 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z.sub.8 and Z.sub.10 present independently --COO--, a 1,2-ethylene group or a covalent bond; Z.sub.9 represents --CH.dbd.CH--, --C.tbd.C--, --COO-- or a covalent bond; and h represents 0 or 1.
- 9. A liquid crystal composition comprising at least one compound according to claim 1 as a first component, and as a second component at least one compound selected from the group consisting of the components of the formula (2), (3) or (4), and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of the compounds of the formula (5), (6), (7), (8) or (9), ##STR41## wherein R.sub.2 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; Y.sub.2 represents a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom, OCF.sub.3, OCF.sub.2 H, CF.sub.3, CF.sub.2 H or CFH.sub.2 ; L.sub.1, L.sub.2, L.sub.3 and L.sub.4 represent independently a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom; Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 represent independently a 1,2-ethylene group, --CH.dbd.CH-- or a covalent bond; and a is 1 or 2, ##STR42## wherein R.sub.3 is a fluorine atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms, and any methylene group in said alkyl or alkenyl group may be replaced by one or more oxygen atoms (--O--), provided that two or more successive methylene groups are not replaced by oxygen atoms; ring B represents 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl; ring C represents 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; ring D represents 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z.sub.3 represents a 1,2-ethylene group, --COO-- or a covalent bond; L.sub.5 and L.sub.6 represent independently a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom; and b and c represent independently 0 or 1, ##STR43## wherein R.sub.4 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; L.sub.7 represents a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom; and d represents 0 or 1, ##STR44## wherein R.sub.5 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, ring E and ring F represent independently 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z.sub.4 and Z.sub.5 represent independently --COO-- or a covalent bond; Z.sub.6 represents --COO-- or --C.tbd.C--; L.sub.8 and L.sub.9 represent independently a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom; Y.sub.3 represents a fluorine atom, OCF.sub.3, OCF.sub.2 H, CF.sub.3, CF.sub.2 H or CFH.sub.2 ; and e, f and g represent independently 0 or 1, ##STR45## wherein R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 represent independently an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group having 2 to 10 atoms, and any methylene group in said alkyl or alkenyl group may be replaced by one or more oxygen atoms, provided that two or more successive methylene groups are not replaced by oxygen atoms; ring H represents 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; ring I represents 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z.sub.6 represents --C.tbd.C--, --COO--, a 1,2-ethylene group, --CH.dbd.CH--C.tbd.C-- or a covalent bond; and Z.sub.7 represents --COO-- or a covalent bond, ##STR46## wherein R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 represent independently an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group having 2 to 10 atoms, and any methylene group in said alkyl or alkenyl group may be replaced by one or more oxygen atoms, provided that two or more successive methylene groups are not replaced by oxygen atoms; ring J represents 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; ring K represents 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene wherein at least one or more hydrogen atoms on the ring are optionally substituted by fluorine atoms, or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; ring L represents 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z.sub.8 and Z.sub.10 present independently --COO--, a 1,2-ethylene group or a covalent bond; Z.sub.9 represents --CH.dbd.CH--, --C.tbd.C--, --COO-- or a covalent bond; and h represents 0 or 1.
- 10. A liquid crystal display element wherein the liquid crystal composition according to claim 6 is used.
