Claims
- 1. A liquid crystal device, comprising: a pair of substrates each provided with a transparent electrode, and a liquid crystal disposed in a chiral smectic phase between the substrates; at least one of said pair of substrates having thereon an alignment film comprising a polyimide obtained through a reaction of at least two species of tetracarboxylic anhydrides of the following formula (III): ##STR43## wherein R.sub.31 denotes a tetravalent organic group, and a diamine of the following formula (IV): ##STR44## wherein R.sub.41 and R.sub.42 denote the same or different alkyl groups having 1-10 carbon atoms.
- 2. A device according to claim 1, wherein said liquid crystal in a chiral smectic phase has a non-helical structure.
- 3. A device according to claim 1, wherein the alignment film is disposed on both substrates.
- 4. A device according to claim 3, wherein the alignment films on both substrates have been subjected to uniaxial aligning treatment in mutually parallel directions.
- 5. A device according to claim 4, wherein the uniaxial aligning treatment is rubbing.
- 6. A device according to claim 3, wherein the alignment films on both substrates have been subjected to uniaxial aligning treatment in directions which are parallel and the same.
- 7. A device according to claim 6, wherein the uniaxial aligning treatment is rubbing.
- 8. A device according to claim 3, wherein the alignment films on both substrates have been subjected to uniaxial aligning treatment in directions which are parallel and opposite.
- 9. A device according to claim 8, wherein the uniaxial aligning treatment is rubbing.
- 10. A device according to claim 3, wherein the alignment films on both substrates have been subjected to uniaxial aligning treatment in directions which intersect with each other.
- 11. A device according to claim 10, wherein the uniaxial aligning treatment is rubbing.
- 12. A device according to claim 1, wherein R.sub.31 denotes ##STR45##
- 13. A device according to claim 1, wherein said chiral smectic liquid crystal is a liquid crystal which successively assumes isotropic phase, cholesteric phase and smectic A phase on temperature decrease.
- 14. A device according to claim 1, wherein R.sub.41 and R.sub.42 denote an alkyl group having 1-5 carbon atoms.
- 15. A liquid crystal apparatus, including a liquid crystal device, comprising: a pair of substrates each provided with a transparent electrode, and a liquid crystal disposed in a chiral smectic phase between the substrates; and voltage application means for applying voltages to the transparent electrodes:
- at least one of said pair of substrates having thereon an alignment film comprising a polyimide obtained through a reaction of at least two species of tetracarboxylic anhydrides of the following formula (III): ##STR46## wherein R.sub.31 denotes a tetravalent organic group, and a diamine of the following formula (IV): ##STR47## wherein R.sub.41 and R.sub.42 denote the same or different alkyl groups having 1-10 carbon atoms.
