Claims
- 1. A liquid crystal device, comprising: a pair of substrates and a chiral smectic liquid crystal disposed between the pair of substrates, each of the pair of substrates having an electrode for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal, wherein
- the chiral smectic liquid crystal is placed in an alignment state in which the liquid crystal molecules have a single average molecular axis perpendicular to the smectic layer of the chiral smectic liquid crystal under no electric field application within a temperature range giving chiral smectic C phase, wherein the single average molecular axis provides the darkest observable state through cross nicol polarizers.
- 2. A device according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal shows a cone angle H which is less than the cone angle H obtained at room temperature.
- 3. A device according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal provides a layer inclination angle .delta. of 6 degrees or less.
- 4. A device according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal provides a smectic A temperature range of at least 18.2.degree. C.
