Claims
- 1. A liquid crystal display comprising:
- a transparent substrate provided with a transparent electrode pattern whereby the transparent substrate and the transparent electrode pattern provide a first inner surface;
- an opposed substrate provided with an opposed electrode pattern whereby the opposed substrate and the opposed electrode pattern provide a second inner surface, said transparent and opposed electrode patterns being arranged in order to define a plurality of pixels inbetween;
- a chiral smectic liquid crystal layer disposed between the first and second inner surfaces;
- one of the inners surfaces contiguous to the liquid crystal being an unrubbed, uneven surface; and
- the other inner surface being a rubbed, oriented surface,
- wherein each said pixel comprises a plurality of regions having various thicknesses dispersed in the pixel.
- 2. A display of claim 1 wherein said uneven surface is formed by growing polycrystalline layer on the substrate.
- 3. A display of claim 1 wherein the unevenness of the surface is on the order or more which is hardly discriminated by naked eyes.
- 4. A display of claim 3 further comprising color filters provided for the display.
- 5. A display of claim 1 further comprising means for defining a plurality of picture elements on the liquid crystal layer, each picture element containing a plurality of the domains.
- 6. A display of claim 5 wherein at least part of the electrode pattern is fabricated as a polycrystalline layer providing said uneven surface.
- 7. A display of claim 1 where said rubbed, oriented surface comprises a rubbed, oriented film provided at said other surface.
- 8. A display of claim 7 where said rubbed, oriented film is provided at least at said transparent electrode and said unrubbed, uneven surface is provided at least at said opposed electrode.
- 9. A display of claim 1 where said rubbed, oriented surface is provided at least at said transparent electrode and said unrubbed, uneven surface is provided at least at said opposed electrode.
