Claims
- 1. A ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer comprising the repeating units of the general formula (I) ##STR140## in which: k is an interger from 1 to 30; and ##STR141## where: X is --COO-- or --OCO--; and
- R.sup.2 is --COOR.sup.3, or --OR.sup.3
- where:
- R.sup.3 is ##STR142## R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 being each independently --CH.sub.3, a halogen radical, or --CN, m and n being each independently an integer from 0 to 10 with the proviso that n is not 0 when R.sup.4 is --CH.sub.3, p being 0 or 1, and C marked with being an asymmetric carbon atom.
- 2. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 wherein the number average molecular weight of the liquid-crystalline polymer is from 2,000 to 400,000.
- 3. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 wherein the number average molecular weight of the liquid-crystalline polymer is less than 2,000 and not less than 1,000.
- 4. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claims 2 or 3 wherein k is an integer from 4 to 10.
- 5. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claims 2 or 3 wherein R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR143##
- 6. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claims 2 or 3 wherein R.sup.3 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR144##
- 7. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1, wherein k is an integre of from 4 to 10.
- 8. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 wherein R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR145## and R.sup.3 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR146##
- 9. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 2 or claim 3 wherein R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR147## and R.sup.3 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR148##
- 10. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 comprising the repeating units of the following formula ##STR149##
- 11. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 comprising the repeating units of the following formula ##STR150##
- 12. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 comprising the repeating units of the following formula ##STR151##
- 13. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 comprising the repeating units of the following formula ##STR152##
- 14. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 comprising the repeating units of the following formula ##STR153##
- 15. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 comprising the repeating units of the following formula ##STR154##
- 16. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 comprising the repeating units of the following formula ##STR155##
- 17. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 comprising the repeating units of the following formula ##STR156##
- 18. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 comprising the repeating units of the following formula ##STR157##
- 19. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 comprising the repeating units of the following formula ##STR158##
- 20. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 comprising the repeating units of the following formula ##STR159##
- 21. the ferroelectric liquid-crystalline polymer of claim 1 comprising the repeating units of the following formula ##STR160##
