Claims
- 1. An apparatus for the generation of a gas for use in a gas driven pump, comprising:
- a first container that is adapted to be situated in fluid communication with the pump, said first container containing a first and a second chemical, said first and second chemicals being initially separated from one another by an openable barrier, and reactive upon contact to generate a gas, the apparatus further comprising a separator interposed between the first container and the pump for allowing the gas to be communicated from the first container to the pump while said first and second chemicals remain in said container.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said first chemical is provided as a liquid and said openable barrier comprises a frangible membrane separating said first chemical from said second chemical, such that when said frangible membrane is ruptured, said first chemical contacts said second chemical.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said first chemical is provided as a liquid and said openable barrier is a frangible container, wherein said first chemical is contained in said frangible container, and the second chemical is provided as a powder such that when said frangible container is ruptured, said second chemical is released and contacts said first chemical.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said separator is a gas permeable membrane.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said separator comprises a hydrophobic material through which gas but not liquid can pass.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the hydrophobic material is a polymeric material.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said hydrophobic material is a polypropylene material.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said hydrophobic material is a membrane selected from the group consisting of Tyvek.RTM., Versapel.RTM., Goretex.RTM., Celguard 2400.TM., Porex.RTM., and BMF.TM..
- 9. An apparatus for the generation of a gas used to provide pressure to drive a liquid from a container, comprising:
- a reactant container in fluid communication with a gas chamber, said reactant container and said gas chamber being separated by a gas permeable separator positioned therebetween, said reactant container containing a solid chemical and a liquid chemical, said solid and liquid chemicals being initially separated by a frangible barrier and reactive upon contact to generate a gas, said gas chamber adapted to apply pressure to said liquid in said container.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said separator comprises a gas permeable membrane.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said separator comprises a hydrophobic membrane.
- 12. An apparatus for the generation of a gas used to provide pressure to drive a fluid from a container, comprising:
- a first chemical and a second chemical, said first and second chemicals being initially separated by a frangible barrier and reactive upon contact to generate a gas, and
- a gas permeable separator separating said chemicals from said container, which allows the gas to be communicated through said separator to apply pressure to the fluid in said container while preventing said first and second chemicals from crossing said gas permeable separator.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein said first chemical is provided as a solid and said second chemical is provided as a liquid.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein said second chemical is contained in a frangible ampule.
