Claims
- 1. A liquid fuel burner, comprising:
- (a) a housing having an open top and a fuel inlet;
- (b) a plate enclosing the top of said housing, said plate having fuel passages therethrough;
- (c) wick means on the outer surface of said plate, said wick means communicating with said fuel passages;
- (d) means for pressurizing fuel within said housing to a pressure above atmospheric pressure for propelling fuel through said fuel passages and into said wick means; and
- (e) said plate and said wick means being made from a porous heat resistant material, said wick means and said plate being a unitary member.
- 2. A burner as in claim 1, wherein said heat resistant material is porous ceramic material.
- 3. A burner as in claim 1, wherein said heat resistant material is porous sintered metal.
- 4. A burner as in claim 1, wherein said wick means comprise a plurality of radially disposed ribs projecting from said plate.
- 5. A liquid fuel burner, comprising:
- (a) a housing having an open top and a fuel inlet;
- (b) a plate enclosing the top of said housing, said plate having fuel passages therethrough;
- (c) wick means on the outer surface of said plate, said wick means communicating with said fuel passages;
- (d) means for pressurizing fuel within said housing to a pressure above atmospheric pressure for propelling fuel through said fuel passages and into said wick means; and
- (e) said plate having a first pattern of grooves in its outer surface and a second pattern of grooves, intersecting said first pattern, in its inner surface, the intersection of said groove patterns forming said fuel passages.
- 6. A burner as in claim 5, wherein said wick means comprises stainless steel mesh, said mesh secured in the first pattern of grooves in said plate.
- 7. A burner as in claim 1, further comprising a valve adjacent the fuel inlet to said housing, said valve having a closure member and means for biasing said closure member in an upstream direction to a closed position.
- 8. A burner as in claim 1, further comprising means for igniting said burner.
- 9. A burner as in claim 8, wherein said means for igniting comprises:
- (a) a glow plug adjacent to said housing; and
- (b) a starter wick, one end of said starter wick proximate to said glow plug and the other end adjacent said wick means.
- 10. A burner as in claim 9, further comprising means for directing air around said glow plug.
- 11. A burner as in claim 1, wherein said means for pressurizing fuel comprises a fuel pump in fluid communication with and upstream of the inlet to said housing.
- 12. A burner as in claim 7, wherein said means for pressurizing fuel comprises a fuel pump in fluid communication with and upstream of said valve, said pump pressurizing said fuel to shuttle said closure member in a downstream direction to an open position for conveying fuel through said valve and into said housing.
