Claims
- 1. A process for preparing CF.sub.3 CH.sub.2 F which comprises
- contacting CF.sub.3 CH.sub.2 Cl with a liquid SbF.sub.5-x Cl.sub.x composition, where x=0 to 2, at an effective temperature in the range of about 40.degree. C. to about 175.degree. C. to form a reaction mixture, said liquid SbF.sub.5-x Cl.sub.x composition present for contacting with the CF.sub.3 CH.sub.2 Cl in a stoichiometric quantity sufficient to provide at least one F for every Cl of said CF.sub.3 CH.sub.2 Cl to be replaced;
- maintaining said contacting and temperature until at least a portion of the CF.sub.3 CH.sub.2 Cl has been converted to CF.sub.3 CH.sub.2 F; and
- recovering CF.sub.3 CH.sub.2 F from the reaction mixture.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the liquid SbF.sub.5-x Cl.sub.x is characterized by x=less than 1.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein the liquid SbF.sub.5-x Cl.sub.x is characterized by x=0.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the liquid SbF.sub.5-x Cl.sub.x is characterized by X=1 to 2.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein the liquid SbF.sub.5-x Cl.sub.x is characterized by x=a fractional number between 1 and 2, including mixtures of SbF.sub.4 Cl and SbF.sub.3 Cl.sub.2.
- 6. The process of claim 1 wherein the temperature is about 60.degree. C. to about 125.degree. C.
- 7. The process of claim 1 wherein the temperature is about 70.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein the contacting and maintaining steps occur in the presence of less than a molar proportion of HF based on the Sb compound.
- 9. The process of claim 1 wherein the contacting and maintaining steps occur in the in the substantial absence of HF.
- 10. The process of claim 1 further including the step of forming CF.sub.3 CH.sub.2 Cl in situ from a suitable underfluorinated precursor, C.sub.2 H.sub.2 Y.sub.4, where Y=Cl or F, with at least two of Y being Cl.
- 11. The process of claim 10 wherein the underfluorinated precursor is selected from the group consisting of 1,1,1,2-tetrachlorethane (CCl.sub.2 CH.sub.2 Cl), 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (CHCl.sub.2 CHCL.sub.2), 1-fluoro-1,1,2-trichloroethane (CFCl.sub.2 CH.sub.2 Cl), 1-fluoro-1,2,2-trichloroethane (CHFClCHCl.sub.2), 1,1-difluoro-2,2-dichloroethane (CHF.sub.2 CHCl.sub.2), 1,1-difluoro-1,2-dichloroethane (CF.sub.2 ClCH.sub.2 Cl), and mixtures thereof.
