Claims
- 1. A "living" polymer of the formula (R.sup.1).sub.2 M(QPZ").sub.2 or O[M(R.sup.1).sub.2 QPZ"].sub.2 wherein:
- Q is the divalent radical selected from the group consisting of ##STR37## and mixtures thereof; P is a divalent polymeric radical of the formula ##STR38## Z" is --C(R.sup.2)(R.sup.3)--C(O)X'; X is --CN, --CH.dbd.CHC(O)X' or --C(O)X';
- Y is --H, --CH.sub.3, --CN or --CO.sub.2 R, provided, however, when X is --CH.dbd.CHC(O)X', Y is --H or --CH.sub.3 ;
- X' is --OSi(R.sup.1).sub.3, --R, --OR or --NR'R";
- R is:
- (a) hydrocarbyl of up to 20 carbon atoms;
- (b) hydrocarbyl of (a) containing one or more ether oxygen atoms within aliphatic segments thereof; or
- (c) hydrocarbyl of (a) or (b) containing one or more functional substituents that are unreactive under polymerizing conditions;
- each R.sup.1, independently, is hydrocarbyl of up to 20 carbon atoms;
- each of R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is independently selected from:
- (a) H;
- (b) hydrocarbyl of up to 20 carbon atoms;
- (c) hydrocarbyl of (b) containing one or more ether oxygen atoms within aliphatic segments thereof; or
- (d) hydrocarbyl of (b) or (c) containing one or more functional substituents that are unreactive under polymerizing conditions;
- each of R' and R" is independently selected from C.sub.1-4 alkyl;
- each of a and b is independently selected from 0 or a number in the range 1 to about 100,000, provided, however, (a+b) is at least 3; and
- M is Si, Sn or Ge.
- 2. Polymer of claim 1 wherein at least one of said R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 groups contains one or more ether oxygen atoms within any aliphatic segment thereof.
- 3. Polymer of claim 1 wherein at least one of said R.sub.p, R, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 groups contains at least one functional substituent that is unreactive under polymerizing conditions.
- 4. Polymer of claim 3 wherein the functional substituent is selected from --P(O)(NR'R").sub.2, --P(O)[OSi(R.sup.1).sub.3 ].sub.2 and --P(O)(OR.sup.1).sub.2.
- 5. Polymer of claim 1 wherein M is Si.
- 6. Polymer of claim 5 wherein X is --C(O)X'.
- 7. Polymer of claim 6 wherein Y is --H or --CH.sub.3.
- 8. Polymer of claim 7 wherein X' is --OR.
- 9. Polymer of claim 8 wherein R is substituted with at least one --OSi(R.sup.1).sub.3 or --C(O)OR group.
- 10. Polymer of claim 8 wherein R is substituted with at least one --OC(R)(R)OR, --OC(H)(R)OR or ##STR39## group.
- 11. Polymer of claim 8 wherein R is substituted with oxiranyl.
- 12. Polymer of claim 8 wherein R is C.sub.1-20 alkyl, sorbyl, 2-methacryloxyethyl, 2-[(1-propenyl)oxy]ethyl, allyl or 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl.
- 13. Polymer of claim 5 wherein X is --CN.
- 14. Polymer of claim 1 wherein R.sup.1 is --CH.sub.3.
- 15. Polymer of claim 5 wherein at least one of R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is H.
- 16. Polymer of claim 5 wherein R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are CH.sub.3.
- 17. Solution of the polymer of claim 1 dissolved or dispersed in an aprotic solvent.
- 18. Film prepared from the solution of claim 17.
- 19. Fiber prepared from the solution of claim 17.
- 20. Coated substrate prepared from the solution of claim 17.
- 21. Process of preparing a "living" block polymer by contacting under polymerizing conditions:
- (1) the "living" polymer of claim 1;
- (2) the monomer selected from the group consisting of CH.sub.2 .dbd.C(Y)X, ##STR40## and mixtures thereof wherein X, Y and R are as defined in claim 1; and
- (3) a co-catalyst which is a source of fluoride, cyanide or azide ions of a suitable Lewis acid to produce a "living" block polymer containing polymer repeat units of the monomer.
- 22. The living polymer formed in the process of claim 21.
- 23. Molded article prepared from the polymer of claim 1.
- 24. Photosensitive article prepared from the polymer of claim 1.
- 25. Process comprising quenching with an active hydrogen source the "living" polymer of claim 1.
- 26. Process of claim 21 wherein the "living" polymer (1) is contacted under polymerizing conditions a plurality of times sequentially with monomer (2) and co-catalyst (3), provided that the monomer (2) in any sequence is different from that used in the immediately prior sequence.
- 27. Process comprising quenching with an active hydrogen source the "living" polymer of claim 22.

This applicaton is also a continuation-in-part of Ser. No. 549,408, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,524,196. Related subject matter is disclosed and claimed by different inventive entity in commonly assigned application Ser. No. 660,589 filed Oct. 18, 1984 as a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 549,408, U.S. Pat. No. 4,524,196 filed Nov. 7, 1983, which is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 389,111, filed June 17, 1982 and now U.S. Pat. No. 4,414,372 application Ser. No. 660,589 is now U.S. Pat. No. 4,581,428 and application Ser. No. 549,408 is now U.S. Pat. No. 4,524,196.
