- 1. A method for determining when a phase locked loop achieves phase lock, the method comprising the steps of:sensing the phase difference between an output signal from a variable frequency oscillator and a data signal to produce an error signal representative of the sensed phase difference; adjusting the frequency of the oscillator responsive to the error signal in a sense to reduce the difference by filtering the error signal through a wide band filter; comparing the error signal to a threshold value so as to generate an indication when the error signal drops below the threshold value; counting a time interval only after generation of the indication; substituting a narrow band filter for the wide band filter after the time interval is counted; and recovering data from the data signal responsive to the output signal from the oscillator only after the lock signal is produced.
