Claims
- 1. A locking assembly for retaining a pair of shutters in a closed position on a dwelling, said locking assembly comprising:
a backing bracket adapted to be fixedly mounted to the dwelling for maintaining the shutters spaced from the dwelling when the shutters are in the closed position; a retention bracket comprising a retention portion and a locking portion, said retention portion being spaced from said backing bracket for enclosing at least a portion of the shutters between said retention portion and said backing bracket when the shutters are in the closed position to prevent the shutters from opening from the closed position, and said locking portion extending substantially transversely from said retention portion to operatively engage said backing bracket; and a fastener extending through said backing bracket and said locking portion of said retention bracket to lock said retention bracket to said backing bracket for retaining the shutters in the closed position.
- 2. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said backing bracket comprises a first backing component for said fixed mounting to the dwelling and a second backing component mounted to said first backing component for receiving said locking portion of said retention bracket and for maintaining the shutters spaced from the dwelling when the shutters are in the closed position.
- 3. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 2 wherein said first backing component comprises a central portion having first and second sides.
- 4. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 3 wherein said first backing component further comprises a first flange portion extending from said first side of said central portion, and a second flange portion extending from said second side of said central portion, wherein at least one of said first and second flange portions receive at least one fastener for said fixed mounting of said backing bracket to the dwelling.
- 5. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 4 wherein said first backing component further comprises first and second support legs spaced from one another and extending substantially transversely from at least one of said central portion and said flange portions to define a gap for supporting said second backing component.
- 6. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 5 wherein said flange portions and said first and second support legs are integral with said central portion.
- 7. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 5 wherein said second backing component is at least partially disposed in said gap between said first and second support legs for said mounting to said first backing component.
- 8. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 7 wherein said fastener extends through said first support leg, said second backing component, said locking portion of said retention bracket, and said second support leg to retain the shutters in the closed position.
- 9. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 5 wherein said second backing component comprises a first lateral section and a second lateral section at least partially spaced from said first lateral section to define a locking channel therebetween.
- 10. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 9 wherein said first and second lateral support sections extend substantially parallel to said retention portion of said retention bracket for enclosing the portion of the shutters.
- 11. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 9 wherein said first support leg of said first backing component abuts said first lateral section of said second backing component to maintain said second backing component spaced from the dwelling, and said second support leg of said first backing component abuts said second lateral section of said second backing component to maintain said second backing component spaced from the dwelling.
- 12. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 9 wherein said locking channel extends substantially transversely from said first and second lateral sections into said gap of said first backing component.
- 13. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 12 wherein said locking portion of said retention bracket extends from said retention portion into said locking channel to operatively engage said second backing component.
- 14. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 13 wherein said fastener extends through said first support leg, said locking channel, said locking portion of said retention bracket, and said second support leg to retain the shutters in the closed position.
- 15. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 14 further comprising an intermediate fastener extending through said locking channel and said locking portion of said retention bracket for providing additional support to retain the shutters in the closed position.
- 16. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 2 wherein said second backing component comprises a first lateral section and a second lateral section at least partially spaced from said first lateral section to define a locking channel therebetween.
- 17. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 16 wherein said first and second lateral support sections extend substantially parallel to said retention portion of said retention bracket for enclosing the portion of the shutters.
- 18. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 16 wherein said first and second lateral support sections extend substantially parallel to a side of the dwelling.
- 19. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 16 wherein said first backing component abuts said first and second lateral sections of said second backing component to maintain said second backing component spaced from the dwelling.
- 20. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 16 wherein said locking channel extends substantially transversely from said first and second lateral sections for mounting said second backing component to said first backing component.
- 21. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 20 wherein said locking portion of said retention bracket extends from said retention portion into said locking channel to operatively engage said second backing component.
- 22. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 21 wherein said fastener extends through said first backing component, said locking channel, and said locking portion of said retention bracket to retain the shutters in the closed position.
- 23. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said backing bracket comprises a central portion having first and second sides.
- 24. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 23 wherein said backing bracket further comprises a first flange portion extending from said first side of said central portion, and a second flange portion extending from said second side of said central portion, wherein at least one of said first and second flange portions receive at least one fastener for said fixed mounting of said backing bracket to the dwelling.
- 25. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 24 wherein said backing bracket further comprises first and second support legs spaced from one another and extending substantially transversely from at least one of said central portion and said flange portions to define a gap for receiving said locking portion of said retention bracket.
- 26. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 25 wherein said first and second support legs extend from at least one of said central portions and said flange portions to maintain the shutters spaced from the dwelling when the shutters are in the closed position.
- 27. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 25 wherein said flange portions and said first and second support legs are integral with said central portion.
- 28. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 25 wherein said locking portion of said retention bracket is at least partially disposed in said gap between said first and second support legs for locking said retention bracket to said backing bracket.
- 29. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 28 wherein said fastener extends through said first support leg, said locking portion of said retention bracket, and said second support leg to retain the shutters in the closed position.
- 30. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said backing bracket comprises a first lateral section and a second lateral section at least partially spaced from said first lateral section to define a locking channel therebetween.
- 31. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 30 wherein said first and second lateral support sections extend substantially parallel to said retention portion of said retention bracket for enclosing the portion of the shutters.
- 32. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 30 wherein said locking channel extends substantially transversely from said first and second lateral sections for said fixed mounting of said backing bracket to the dwelling.
- 33. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 32 wherein said locking portion of said retention bracket extends from said retention portion into said locking channel to operatively engage said backing bracket.
- 34. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 33 wherein said fastener extends through said locking channel and said locking portion of said retention bracket to retain the shutters in the closed position.
- 35. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said backing bracket is generally U-shaped.
- 36. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said retention bracket is generally T-shaped.
- 37. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said backing bracket is adapted to be fixedly mounted to one of a sill and a header of the dwelling.
- 38. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 37 further comprising a second backing bracket adapted to be fixedly mounted to the other of the sill and header of the dwelling.
- 39. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 38 further comprising:
a second retention bracket comprising a second retention portion and a second locking portion, said second retention portion being spaced from said second backing bracket for enclosing the portion of the shutters between said second retention portion and said second backing bracket when the shutters are in the closed position to prevent the shutters from opening from the closed position, and said second locking portion extending substantially transversely from said second retention portion to operatively engage said second backing bracket; and a second fastener extending through said second backing bracket and said second locking portion of said second retention bracket to lock said second retention bracket to said second backing bracket for retaining the shutters in the closed position.
- 40. A locking assembly for retaining a pair of shutters in a closed position on a dwelling, said locking assembly comprising:
a first backing component adapted to be fixedly mounted to the dwelling for maintaining the shutters spaced from the dwelling when the shutters are in the closed position; a second backing component mounted to said first backing component for maintaining the shutters spaced from the dwelling when the shutters are in the closed position; a retention bracket comprising a retention portion and a locking portion, said retention portion being spaced from said second backing component for enclosing at least a portion of the shutters between said retention portion and said second backing component-when the shutters are in the closed position to prevent the shutters from opening from the closed position, and said locking portion extending substantially transversely from said retention portion to operatively engage said first backing component; and a fastener extending through said first backing component, said second backing component, and said locking portion of said retention bracket to lock said retention bracket to said backing bracket for retaining the shutters in the closed position.
- 41. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 40 wherein said first backing component comprises:
a central portion having first and second sides; a first flange portion extending from said first side of said central portion; and a second flange portion extending from said second side of said central portion; wherein at least one of said first and second flange portions receive at least one fastener for said fixed mounting of said first backing component to the dwelling.
- 42. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 41 wherein said first backing component further comprises first and second support legs spaced from one another and extending substantially transversely from at least one of said central portion and said flange portions to define a gap for supporting said second backing component.
- 43. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 42 wherein said second backing component is at least partially disposed in said gap between said first and second support legs for said mounting to said first backing component.
- 44. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 43 wherein said fastener extends through said first support leg, said second backing component, said locking portion of said retention bracket, and said second support leg to retain the shutters in the closed position.
- 45. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 44 wherein said second backing component comprises a first lateral section and a second lateral section at least partially spaced from said first lateral section to define a locking channel therebetween.
- 46. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 45 wherein said first and second lateral support sections extend substantially parallel to said retention portion of said retention bracket for enclosing the portion of the shutters.
- 47. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 46 wherein said first support leg of said first backing component abuts said first lateral section of said second backing component to maintain said second backing component spaced from the dwelling, and said second support leg of said first backing component abuts said second lateral section of said second backing component to maintain said second backing component spaced from the dwelling.
- 48. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 47 wherein said locking channel extends substantially transversely from said first and second lateral sections into said gap of said first backing component.
- 49. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 48 wherein said locking portion of said retention bracket extends from said retention portion into said locking channel to operatively engage said second backing component.
- 50. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 49 wherein said fastener extends through said first support leg, said locking channel, said locking portion of said retention bracket, and said second support leg to retain the shutters in the closed position.
- 51. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 50 further comprising an intermediate fastener extending through said locking channel and said locking portion of said retention bracket for providing additional support to retain the shutters in the closed position.
- 52. A locking assembly for retaining a pair of shutters in a closed position on a dwelling, said locking assembly comprising:
a central portion adapted to be fixedly mounted to the dwelling; first and second support legs spaced from one another and extending substantially transversely from said central portion to define a gap; first and second lateral sections extending substantially transversely to said first and second support legs for maintaining the shutters spaced from the dwelling when the shutters are in the closed position, said first and second lateral support sections being at least partially spaced from one another to define a locking channel, wherein said locking channel is at least partially disposed in said gap between said first and second support legs for mounting said first and second lateral sections to said central portion; a retention portion spaced from said first and second lateral sections for enclosing at least a portion of the shutters between said retention portion and said first and second lateral sections when the shutters are in the closed position to prevent the shutters from opening from the closed position; a locking portion extending substantially transversely from said retention portion to operatively engage said locking channel; and a fastener extending through said first support leg, said locking channel, said locking portion, and said second support leg to lock said retention portion to said locking channel and said central portion for retaining the shutters in the closed position.
- 53. A locking assembly as set forth in claim 52 wherein said central portion and said first and second support legs are integral, and said retention portion and said locking portion are integral.
- 54. A shutter assembly for protecting an opening of a dwelling, said shutter assembly comprising:
first and second shutters pivotable between an open position and a closed position; a backing bracket adapted to be fixedly mounted to the dwelling for maintaining said shutters spaced from the dwelling when said shutters are in said closed position; a retention bracket comprising a retention portion and a locking portion, said retention portion being spaced from said backing bracket for enclosing at least a portion of said shutters between said retention portion and said backing bracket when said shutters are in said closed position to prevent the shutters from opening from said closed position, and said locking portion extending substantially transversely from said retention portion to operatively engage said backing bracket; and a fastener extending through said backing bracket and said locking portion of said retention bracket to lock said retention bracket to said backing bracket for retaining said shutters in said closed position.
- 55. A shutter assembly as set forth in claim 54 further comprising a shutter gap defined between said shutters in said closed position.
- 56. A shutter assembly as set forth in claim 55 wherein said locking portion extends substantially transversely from said retention portion through said shutter gap to operatively engage said backing bracket.
