Claims
- 1. Apparatus adapted for supporting a spare tire on the underside of a vehicle, comprising:
- a pair of spaced apart side members adapted for attaching to the underside of the vehicle, each said side member having a track;
- a carriage adapted to receive the spare tire and supported by said tracks so that said carriage is moveable between a retracted tire storage position and an extended position; and
- an elongate locking bar attached to said carriage so as to be movable relative to said carriage, such that said bar is movable while said carriage is fixed, and having ends engageable with corresponding said side members, said locking bar having two sections intermediate the ends which are grippable respectively by a user's hands for moving said carriage between said storage position and said extended position and for effecting locking of said carriage to said side members by movement of said locking bar with respect to said carriage, and including means on one end of said locking bar lockable with one said side member when said locking bar is moved to a first position, and unlockable with said one side member when said locking bar is moved to a second position.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said one side member and said one end of said locking bar include means responsive to a rotational movement of said locking bar relative to said carriage for effecting said lock therebetween.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said one side member includes one of an irregular shaped mating male or female part, and said one end of said locking bar includes the other of said mating male or female part, said male and female parts being adapted for fully locking and unlocking in response to less than one rotation of the locking bar.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said one side member includes an aperture spaced from an edge of said one side member and a smaller channel between said edge and said aperture, and said one end of said locking bar includes a narrowed part which can pass through said channel for said engagement but which cannot pass through said channel when in said locked position.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said one side member and said one end of said locking bar include means responsive to a longitudinal movement of said locking bar relative to said carriage for effecting said lock therebetween.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, further including means for engaging said locking bar at the ends thereof to corresponding said side members so that said locking bar supports said carriage to said side members.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1, further including a first apertured flange fixed to said locking bar and a second apertured flange fixed to said carriage in a position with respect to said first flange so that said apertures are aligned when said locking bar is locked to said one side member and said flanges can be padlocked together to prevent movement of said carriage to said extended position.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7, further including spring means for biasing said first flange toward said second flange.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8, further including a handle grip fixed to said locking bar for facilitating movement of said locking bar against said spring bias means.
- 10. Apparatus adapted for supporting a spare tire on the underside of a vehicle, comprising:
- a pair of spaced apart side members adapted for attaching to the underside of the vehicle, said side members each including an inclined track and a locking aperture;
- a tire carriage adapted for holding the spare tire, said carriage having upright side ends each with a shaft moveable within a respective said track for allowing movement of said carriage between an upper retracted tire storage position and a lower extended position, said carriage further including an upright rear and with a cylindrical part;
- a transverse locking bar rotatable within said carriage cylindrical part and extending between the side members, said locking bar including two sections intermediate the ends thereof which are grippable by a user's hands, said locking bar further including irregular shaped ends which are insertable into the locking apertures in said side members in response to axial rotation of the locking bar; and
- whereby the user can grip the locking bar and move the carriage between the storage and extended positions and lock and unlock the carriage with respect to the side members without moving the user's hands from the locking bar.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10, further including a pair of apertured padlock tabs, one tab being connected to the locking bar and one tab being connected to the carriage cylindrical part.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11, further including means for biasing said padlock tabs together, said means also being effective to bias said locking bar in a locked position with respect to said side members.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein each end of said locking bar includes a flat narrowed part which includes a width greater than a thickness thereof, and said side member apertures include a generally round hole and a narrowed aperture connecting said round holes to respective rear edges of said side members, whereby the flat narrowed part ends of the locking bar can be inserted through the respective narrowed aperture into the round holes, and said locking bar can be rotated and locked to prevent the ends from being removed from the round holes of said side members.
