Claims
- 1. Apparatus for continually producing signals proportional in amplitude to an angle between the longitudinal centerline of a railroad vehicle and the longitudinal centerline of one truck of said vehicle comprised of a linear motion transducer mechanically affixed between one corner of said truck and the nearest side of said vehicle, said linear transducer being oriented perpendicular to said nearest side of said vehicle when the axis of said truck is parallel to the axis of said vehicle, whereby an output signal is produced that is a function of displacement of said truck corner and said side of said vehicle as a measurement of said angle, and including a second linear motion transducer mechanically affixed between a second corner of said truck diagonally opposite said one corner and the nearest side of said vehicle to said second corner, said second transducer being oriented perpendicular to said nearest side thereof when the axis of said truck is parallel to the axis of said vehicle, whereby a second output signal is produced that is a function of displacement of said second corner of said truck and the nearest side of said second corner, and means for electrically connecting said transducers to algebraically add said output signals for increased sensitivity to any pivotal motion of said truck with respect to said vehicle.
- 2. Apparatus as defined in claim 1, and including a pair of linear motion transducers affixed between diagonally opposite corners of a second truck of said vehicle corresponding to the unused corners of said first truck and sides of said vehicle nearest said diagonally opposite corners, and means for connecting said pair of transducers in series with each other to produce a signal proportional in amplitude to an angle between the longitudinal centerline of a railroad vehicle and the longitudinal centerline of said second truck, and means for adding the output signal of transducers affixed to said one truck to the output signal of transducers affixed to said second truck for doubly increased sensitivity of any pivotal motion of said trucks due to a curve in the railroad, and cancellation of any lateral displacement of said trucks with respect to said vehicle.
- 3. Apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein each transducer is comprised of a potentiometer having a resistance member and a wiper, one end of the resistance member thereof being pivotally affixed to the side of said vehicle and said wiper being pivotally affixed to said corner of said truck.
- 4. Apparatus is defined in claim 3 wherein each transducer affixed to said second truck is like each transducer affixed to said one truck of said vehicle, and wherein a voltage source is electrically connected to the wiper of one transducer of said one truck, and the output of said one transducer at one end of said resistance member is applied to the wiper of a second transducer of said one truck, and the output of said second transducer at one end of said resistance member is applied to said one end of a resistance member of one transducer affixed to said second truck, and the output of the latter one transducer at the wiper thereof is applied to one end of a resistance member of said second tansducer affixed to said second truck, and the output signal, proportional in amplitude to an angle between the longitudinal centerline of a railroad vehicle and the longitudinal centerline of one truck of said vehicle, is obtained from the wiper of the latter second transducer with double sensitivity and cancellation of any independent lateral displacement of each of said trucks with respect to said vehicle.
- 5. Apparatus for continually producing a signal proportional in amplitude to an angle between the longitudinal centerline of a first railroad vehicle having sides and the longitudinal centerline of a second railroad vehicle having sides, said vehicle being hitched in tandem, comprised of a linear motion transducer mechanically affixed between a side of said first railroad vehicle and a corresponding side of said second railroad vehicle, said linear transducer being oriented between corresponding points of said vehicles selected from points on said sides of said vehicles for producing a signal proportional in amplitude to said angle in a horizontal plane and a signal proportional in amplitude to said angle in a vertical plane and including a second linear motion transducer mechanically affixed between a second side of said first railroad vehicle opposite said one side and a second side of said second vehicle opposite said one side of said second vehicle, said second transducer being oriented parallel to said first transducer and means for electrically connecting said transducers to algebraically add said output signals for increased sensitivity to any change in angle between the centerline of said first vehicle and the centerline of said second vehicle.
