Claims
- 1. A method for the treatment of a pain condition in an animal, which comprises:
- intramuscularly injecting a therapeutically effective dose of a solution of a water-soluble analgesic or antagonist drug solubilized within a polymer matrix, wherein the polymer matrix contains a negatively charged polymer selected from the group consisting of hyaluronic acid salts, chondroitin sulfate and mixtures thereof and a nonionic polymer selected from the group consisting of carboxymethylcellulose sodium, hydroxyethylcellulose, hydroxyproplcellulose and mixtures thereof in an aqueous solution wherein the ratio of the negatively charged polymer to the nonionic polymer is 1:0.5 to 2; and wherein the dosage is effective to provide therapeutically effective levels of the drug for a period of time at least 18 hours with amounts of drug which would be considered less than therapeutically effective for such time periods.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the condition is alleviated without significantly modifying motor or sensory function.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the condition is pain associated with a neoplastic or cancerous condition.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the condition is back pain.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the condition is associated with a surgical procedure.
- 6. A method for the treatment of drug addiction in an animal, which comprises:
- intramuscularly injecting a therapeutically effective dose of a solution of a water-soluble analgesic or antagonist drug composition comprising the drug dispersed within a polymer matrix which is solubilized in an aqueous medium wherein the ratio of the negatively charged polymer to the nonionic polymer is 1:0.5 to 2; and wherein the polymer matrix contains a negatively charged polymer selected from the group consisting of hyaluronic acid salts, chondroitin sulfate and mixtures thereof blended with a nonionic polymer selected from the group consisting carboxymethylcellulose sodium, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxyproplcellulose and mixtures thereof.
