Claims
- 1. A long-period heat storage accumulator adapted to contain a large volume of water where the accumulator is for use with a power station and where the accumulator has means for filling and removing water therefrom, the improvement comprising in that said accumulator is contained with a cavern formed from a rock formation whereby the pressure of the water in the accumulator is contained by the rock formation and in that an accumulator wall is spaced from the rock formation with the space between the rock formation and the wall being filled with compressed gas at a pressure equal approximately to the pressure of adjacent hot water.
- 2. A long period heat storage accumulator according to claim 1 wherein the space between the wall of the accumulator and the rock formation is filled with a saturated vapor of a liquid the critical temperature of which lies below the lowest operating temperature of the storage water but above the temperature of a gas accumulator container connected with the interior of the accumulator.
- 3. A long period heat storage accumulator according to claim 2 having in addition means for maintaining the temperature of gas in the gas accumulator at a specified value.
- 4. A long period heat storage accumulator according to claim 2 wherein said gas is an aliphatic hydrocarbon.
- 5. A long-period heat storage accumulator adapted to contain a large volume of water where the accumulator is for use with a power station and where the accumulator has means for filling and removing water therefrom, the improvement comprising in that said accumulator is contained within a cavern formed from a rock formation whereby the pressure of the water in the accumulator is contained by the rock formation and in that a wall of the accumulator comprises a plurality of U-shaped rings with gaps between adjacent rings to absorb longitudinal expansion.
