Claims
- 1. A suspension assembly for suspending an endless track beneath a tracked vehicle chassis and for maintaining the track at a generally uniform tension during compressive travel of the suspension assembly toward the vehicle chassis, the suspension assembly comprising:
- an elongated slide rail having a forward end, a rearward end and a bottom track engaging portion;
- a front suspension arm having an upper end adapted for pivotal connection to the vehicle chassis and a lower end pivotally connected to the slide rail;
- a rear suspension arm having an upper end for pivotal connection to the vehicle chassis and a lower end pivotally connected to the slide rail;
- biasing means for urging the slide rail away from the vehicle chassis; and
- a slide rail regulator for regulating upward movement of the forward end of the slide rail to upward movement of the rearward end of the slide rail during at least a portion of the compressive travel.
- 2. The suspension assembly of claim 1 wherein the side rail regulator comprises a portion of the rear suspension arm.
- 3. The suspension assembly of claim 1 wherein a portion of the side rail regulator comprises a telescoping relationship with a portion of the suspension assembly.
- 4. The suspension assembly of claim 3 wherein the telescoping relationship comprises a slot formed in the slide rail and the lower end of the rear suspension arm slidably disposed within the slot.
- 5. The suspension assembly of claim 1 wherein a portion of the side rail regulator comprises a sliding relationship relative to a portion of the suspension assembly.
- 6. The suspension assembly of claim 1 wherein the front and rear suspension arms comprise a generally equal length.
- 7. The suspension assembly of claim 1 wherein the biasing means comprise a rear piston and cylinder assembly extending between the slide rail and the vehicle chassis.
- 8. The suspension assembly of claim 1 wherein the slide rail regulator regulates forward movement of the lower end of the rear suspension arm relative to the length of the slide rail.
- 9. The suspension assembly of claim 1 wherein the slide rail regulator regulates rearward movement of the lower end of the rear suspension arm relative to the length of the slide rail.
- 10. The suspension assembly of claim 1 further comprising a flexible endless track disposed in sliding engagement with the slide rail.
- 11. The suspension assembly of claim 1 wherein the slide rail regulator regulates pivotal movement of the upper end of the rear suspension arm relative to the vehicle chassis.
- 12. The suspension assembly of claim 1 wherein the slide rail regulator regulates pivotal movement of the upper end of the forward suspension arm relative to the vehicle chassis.
- 13. The suspension assembly of claim 1 wherein the forward suspension arm is substantially parallel to the rear suspension arm during compressive travel of the suspension system.
- 14. The suspension assembly of claim 1 wherein the forward suspension arm, the rear suspension arm, the slide rail and the vehicle chassis comprise a parallelogram linkage system.
- 15. A suspension assembly for suspending an endless track beneath a tracked vehicle chassis and for maintaining the track at a generally uniform tension during compressive travel of the suspension assembly toward the vehicle chassis, the suspension assembly comprising:
- an elongated slide rail having a forward end, a rearward end and a bottom track engaging portion;
- biasing means for urging the slide rail away from the vehicle chassis;
- a front suspension arm having an upper end adapted for pivotal connection to the vehicle chassis and a lower end pivotally connected to the slide rail;
- a rear suspension arm having an upper end for pivotal connection to the vehicle chassis and a lower end pivotally connected to the slide rail, a portion of the rear suspension arm comprising a telescoping relationship with a portion of the suspension assembly such that upward movement of the forward end of the slide rail is coupled to upward movement of the rearward end of the slide rail during at least a portion of the compressive travel.
- 16. The suspension assembly of claim 15 wherein the telescoping relationship is with the slide rail.
