Claims
- 1. An L band optical amplifier comprising:
a signal line including:
an input; an output disposed optically downstream of the input; and an amplifying gain medium optically disposed between the input and the output; a laser optically connected to the amplifying gain medium; and means for directing C band light into the amplifying gain medium, wherein the means comprises at least one reflective element optically disposed in the signal line between the input and the amplifying gain medium.
- 2. The L band optical amplifier according to claim 1, wherein the at least one reflective element reflects light within a range of approximately 1535 to 1560 nm.
- 3. The L band optical amplifier according to claim 1, wherein the at least one reflective element comprises a first reflective element and a second reflective element.
- 4. The L band optical amplifier according to claim 3, further comprising a lasing medium optically disposed between the first reflective element and the second reflective element.
- 5. The L band optical amplifier according to claim 1, wherein the signal line further comprises an optical isolator optically disposed between the input and the amplifying gain medium.
- 6. The L band optical amplifier according to claim 1, wherein the means for directing amplified spontaneous emission increases signal gain by approximately 14 dB.
- 7. The L band optical amplifier according to claim 1, wherein the laser is a 980 nm laser.
- 8. The L band amplifier according to claim 1, wherein the amplifying gain medium comprises a first amplifying gain medium and a second amplifying gain medium.
- 9. The L band optical amplifier according to claim 8, wherein the signal line further comprises an optical isolator optically disposed between the amplifying gain medium and the output.
- 10. The L band amplifer according to claim 9, further comprising at least a second reflective element optically disposed in the signal line between the at least one reflective element and the optical isolator.
- 11. The L band amplifer according to claim 10, wherein the at least second reflective element reflects light within a range of approximately 1560 to 1580 nm.
- 12. An L band optical amplifier comprising:
a signal line including:
an input; an output disposed optically downstream of the input; and an amplifying gain medium optically disposed between the input and the output; a laser optically connected to the amplifying gain medium; and means for directing C band light into the amplifying gain medium, wherein the means comprises a C band seed pump and a C-L band coupler optically connecting the C band seed pump to the signal line.
- 13. The L band optical amplifier according to claim 12, wherein the C band seed pump is tunable.
- 14. The L band optical amplifier according to claim 12, wherein the C band seed pump comprises a plurality of C band seed pumps, each of the plurality of C band seed pumps adapted to emit light of differing wavelengths.
