- 2. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the side wall of the sheath defines an opening, and the catheter tube is secured to the pivot assembly such that the catheter tube will bend outwardly through the opening in the side wall in response to sliding movement of the catheter tube toward the distal region of the sheath.
- 3. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pivot assembly includes a base member and a pivot member pivotable relative to the base member.
- 4. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 3, wherein the base member comprises a socket and the pivot member comprises a ball adapted to be received in the socket.
- 5. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 4, further comprising:
a pin extending across the socket such that the ball is secured within the socket.
- 6. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 4, wherein the pivot member further comprises a connector adapted to be secured to the distal region of the catheter tube and a neck member extending from the ball to the connector.
- 7. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 6, wherein the neck member defines a substantially circular cross-section.
- 8. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 6, wherein the neck member defines a substantially non-circular cross-section.
- 9. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 6, wherein the base member defines a slot through which the neck of the pivot member pivots, and the pivot member and base member slot are configured such that the pivot member is substantially prevented from rotating when a portion thereof is within the slot.
- 10. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 3, wherein the base member defines a slot through which the pivot member pivots.
- 11. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 10, wherein the slot and pivot member are configured such that the pivot member is substantially prevented from rotating when a portion thereof is within the slot.
- 12. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 3, wherein the pivot member is pivotably secured to the base member by a pin.
- 13. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 3, wherein the base member and pivot member are formed from substantially rigid material.
- 14. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the interior bore of the sheath defines a longitudinal axis and the pivot assembly allows the distal region of the catheter tube to pivot at least approximately 180 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis.
- 15. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 14, wherein the pivot assembly allows the distal region of the catheter tube to pivot at least approximately 270 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis.
- 16. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the interior bore of the sheath defines a longitudinal axis and the pivot assembly allows the distal region of the catheter tube to pivot up to approximately 180 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis.
- 17. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:
at least one operative element carried by the catheter tube.
- 18. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 17, wherein the at least one operative element includes an electrode.
- 19. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the distal region of the sheath defines a distal end, and the pivot assembly is located in spaced relation to the distal end of the sheath.
- 20. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sheath defines an inner surface having a shape, the catheter tube defines an outer surface having a shape, and the respective shapes of the outer surface of the catheter tube and inner surface of the sheath are such that rotation of the catheter tube relative to the sheath is limited to a predetermined range.
- 21. A catheter assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sheath defines an inner surface having a shape, the catheter tube defines an outer surface having a shape, and the respective shapes of the outer surface of the catheter tube and inner surface of the sheath are such that rotation of the catheter tube relative to the sheath is substantially prevented.
- 22. A probe, comprising:
a sheath including a side wall defining an interior bore and a distal region; a bendable tube carried for sliding movement in the interior bore of the sheath, the tube defining a distal region; and a pivot assembly associated with the distal region of the sheath and the distal region of the tube.
- 23. A probe as claimed in claim 22, wherein the side wall of the sheath defines an opening, and the tube is secured to the pivot assembly such that the tube will bend outwardly through the opening in the side wall in response to sliding movement of the tube toward the distal region of the sheath.
- 24. A probe as claimed in claim 22, wherein the pivot assembly includes a base member and a pivot member pivotable relative to the base member.
- 25. A probe as claimed in claim 24, wherein the base member comprises a socket and the pivot member comprises a ball adapted to be received in the socket.
- 26. A probe as claimed in claim 25, further comprising:
a pin extending across the socket such that the ball is secured within the socket.
- 27. A probe as claimed in claim 22, further comprising:
at least one operative element carried by the tube.
- 28. A probe as claimed in claim 27, wherein the at least one operative element includes an electrode.
