Claims
- 1. A single mode optical waveguide fiber optimized to have low attenuation comprising:
- a core glass region having a refractive index profile;
- an annular clad glass layer surrounding and in contact with the core glass region, the clad glass layer having a refractive index profile, wherein at least a portion of the core index profile is greater than at least a portion of the clad layer index profile; wherein, said core region includes,
- a center segment having an outer radius r.sub.1, a relative index .DELTA..sub.1 %, and a centerline having a relative index,
- a first annular segment, surrounding and in contact with the center segment, having a relative index .DELTA..sub.2 %, and,
- a second annular segment, surrounding and in contact with the first annular segment, having a center radius r.sub.3, a relative index .DELTA..sub.3 %, and a width W.sub.3 ;
- wherein,
- .DELTA..sub. %>.DELTA..sub.3 %.gtoreq..DELTA..sub.2 %.gtoreq.0; and,
- the center segment has an .alpha.-profile, for which .alpha.=1, the index profile of the first annular segment is a step, and the index profile of the second annular segment is a rounded step; and,
- the centerline relative index is less than or equal to .DELTA..sub.1 %, .DELTA..sub.1 % is in the range 0.77% to 1.30%, r.sub.1 is in the range 2.04 .mu.m to 3.41 .mu.m, .DELTA..sub.2 % is in the range 0 to 0.16%, .DELTA..sub.3 % is in the range 0 to 0.51%, r.sub.3 is in the range 5.53 .mu.m to 10.21 .mu.m, and w.sub.3 is in the range 0 to 5.76 .mu.m.
- 2. The single mode waveguide of claim 1 further characterized by an inner and an outer profile volume wherein the inner volume is in the range 2.67 units to 3.62 units and the outer volume is in the range 1.00 units to 7.85 units; and wherein,
- the combinations of profile parameters selected from the prescribed ranges provide a single mode waveguide having attenuation at 1550 nm less than or equal to 0.203 dB/km.
- 3. The single mode waveguide of claim 2 wherein zero dispersion wavelength is in the range 1575 nm to 1595 nm, total dispersion slope.ltoreq.0.10 ps/nm.sup.2 -km, mode field diameter in the range 7.9 .mu.m to 9.1 .mu.m, cut off wavelength.ltoreq.1500 nm, and pin array bending induced attenuation is less than or equal to 8 dB.
- 4. The single mode waveguide of claim 1 further characterized by an inner and an outer profile volume wherein the inner volume is about 3.02 units and the outer volume is about 3.9 units; and wherein,
- the combinations of profile parameters selected from the prescribed ranges provide a single mode waveguide having attenuation at 1550 nm less than or equal to 0.19 dB/km.
- 5. A single mode optical waveguide fiber optimized to have low attenuation comprising:
- a core glass region having a refractive index profile;
- an annular clad glass layer surrounding and in contact with the core glass region, the clad glass layer having a refractive index profile, wherein at least a portion of the core index profile is greater than at least a portion of the clad layer index profile; wherein, said core region includes,
- a center segment having a relative index .DELTA..sub.1 % and an outer radius r.sub.1 and a centerline having a relative index,
- an annular segment having relative index .DELTA..sub.2 % and radius r.sub.2 measured from the waveguide centerline to the outer edge of the first annular region, wherein,
- the centerline relative index is less than or equal to .DELTA..sub.1 %,
- the center segment has an .alpha.-profile, for which .alpha.=1 and the index profile of the first segment is a step index profile,
- .DELTA..sub. % is in the range 0.86% to 1.25%, r.sub.1 is in the range 1.84 .mu.m to 2.38 .mu.m, and .DELTA..sub.2 % is in the range 0.03% to 0.10%, r.sub.2 is in the range 6.50 .mu.m to 10.54 .mu.m.
- 6. The single mode waveguide of claim 5 further characterized by an inner and an outer profile volume wherein the inner volume is in the range 2.76 units to 3.35 units and the outer volume is in the range 2.24 units to 7.77 units; and wherein,
- the combinations of profile parameters selected from the prescribed ranges provide a single mode waveguide having attenuation at 1550 nm less than or equal to 0.203 dB/km.
- 7. The single mode waveguide of claim 6 wherein, zero dispersion wavelength in the range 1575 nm to 1595 nm, total dispersion slope.ltoreq.0.10 ps/nm.sup.2 -km, mode field diameter in the range 7.9 .mu.m to 9.1 .mu.m, cut off wavelength.ltoreq.1500 nm, and pin array bending induced attenuation is less than or equal to 8 dB.
