In the field of in store product advertising for retail stores, a large number of methods and devices exist to convey information about a product brand. Unfortunately, most of these devices and methods are physical and static in nature, such as the traditional posters, cards and placards placed proximate the products which may often times have difficulty in attracting the consumer's attention. However, such advertising displays have the benefit of being inexpensive to both produce and maintain. Since such advertising displays are inexpensive the displays can be disposed at the end of a product advertising period.
Electronic based devices such as kiosks, programmable overhead projectors and large LCD and LED television screens, which deliver video and audio advertisement of products to the consumer at retail stores outlet are effective in not only attracting but also capturing the consumer's attention. However, the aforementioned electronic based devices usually have bulky hardware which generally require a fixed installation proximal a power source in the retail outlet. In addition the display screens are relatively expensive to not only purchase but also set up and maintain as they generally require specialized technicians to install the advertising messages as well as provide periodic maintenance and repair of the devices. If a retailer, producer, manufacturer or other trader of branded products or services has outlets in multiple locations, the cost of purchasing and maintaining the aforementioned electronic based devices may increase exponentially. In addition, if the outlets are located in remote or semi-remote locations, it may be difficult to obtain a technician to perform not only periodic maintenance and repair but also to install the messages to be delivered.
A feature of the invention described herein is that it provides a low cost advertising display as well as a low cost method of temporary in store product advertising for retail stores, which may be located in different geographical areas. A further feature of the invention is the electronic and static advertisement of a product that is installed in the advertising display may be created, installed, and manufactured in a different geographical area and then delivered to retail stores where the advertising displays can be set on or proximate a product shelf by an unskilled worker. Further features of the invention described herein is that the aforementioned advertising display provides, an advertising or information display that is relatively inexpensive to manufacture, that is both a static and repeatable video/audio advertisement; that can be supplied at little or no costs to the retail store that can be delivered to the retail store outlets in a ready to use condition. That is, no specialized technician is required to install any messages and no repairs and maintenance is required since the advertising display device is in a self contained housing and when the advertising program is finished may be mailed back to a recycler when the battery in the advertising display is discharged or when the advertising display becomes inoperable due to damage or when the adverting program is completed.
A further feature of the present invention is that since the aforementioned device is intended as a replacement for the traditional store product advertising items such as posters, cards and placards that are placed around or proximate products, the device may be set easily set up by any employee of the retail store outlet who is familiar with the static advertising displays.

Typically, the inexpensive stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player 10 includes an electronic display screen 11 preferably having a depth “d” of less than 1 centimeter so as to use as the same amount of shelf space as conventional static advertising material. An example of electronic display screen 11 may include but is not limited to an ultra-thin and slightly flexible LCD or LED screen which may have touch screen capabilities.
The stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player 10 also includes a flash memory storage unit 12, which functions to store a repeatable video and audio advertisement of a product that may be filed in various formats including but not limited to AVI, Real Video, MP3/MP4, Quick Time™, MPEG1, MPEG2, and MPEG4 thereon. It is noted that flash memory storage unit 12 may comprise single-level cell based memory such as those found in solid-state drives or multi-level cell memory such as those found in USB drives. Although flash memory storage unit 12 may be tailored in capacity to fulfill the need of the size of the video and audio advertisement files, it is preferred that a playing time of the video and audio advertisement is less than a minute since the life of the battery is of limited duration and the unit is either disposed of or recycled after the battery fails.
Connecting electronic display screen 11 to flash memory storage unit 12 is a video player 13, which has the ability to access the repeatable video and audio advertisement stored on flash memory storage unit 12 and play the repeatable video and audio advertisement on electronic display screen 11 on demand. By “on demand” it is meant that stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player 10 may be activated directly by a consumer, activated by a motion sensor, activated by sound or the various combinations. Although stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player 10 is designed to play one repeatable video and audio advertisement of the product on electronic display screen 11 on demand, alternative embodiments may include a stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player having the capability of playing multiple repeatable video and audio advertisement of a product on the electronic display means based on consumer interaction via a touch screen or for some form of push buttons.
A feature of the present invention is that stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player 10 does not use an external power source and is self-powered by a battery and preferably a low cost rechargeable or non-rechargeable battery 14, which are typically disposed after being discharged. Although the life of stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player 10 may vary depending upon use, the life of the stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player 10 preferably is use driven rather than time driven. That is, life of the stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player 10 is based on the life of battery 14, which may typically last for a period of 2-3 weeks since the video player requires the battery to operate. The life of the stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player 10 may also be limited by, the number of cycles/use or playing time of the repeatable video and audio advertisement of the product and is dependent on the duration of the video display since the video display consumes energy from the battery.
A feature relating to the cost of the present invention is that once the battery 14 is discharged the battery cannot be recharged by user and the stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player 10 is either disposed of or preferably sent to a recycler for recycling. Examples of suitable batteries for powering stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player include but are not limited to primary (single-use or “disposable”) batteries and thin film solid-state smart battery that are integral to the flash memory storage unit 12. Thus, the maximum life of the advertising display is limited by the life of the battery powering the display.
In the example shown the stand-alone battery powered flash memory video player 10 includes a set of graphics 15 on a front face 10a of flash memory video player 10 to induce customers to watch the video and audio advertisement on flash memory video player 10. The set of graphics 15 on flash memory video player 10 may also include LED lights thereon to further attract consumers to watch the video and audio advertisement on flash memory video player 10.
Box housing 26 also includes a mailing label 28 located on the exterior surface of box housing 26, which is normally not visible to the customer watching the video and audio advertisement on electronic display screen 11. Although mailing label 28 may be located at various locations on box housing 26, mailing label 28
