Claims
- 1. A method of making a die with a die cavity for a large relatively flat product to be pultruded through said die, the method comprising:
forming a top plate and a bottom plate from a heat-transmissive material as a rectangular block wherein a width of said top plate and said bottom plate is greater than a width of said die cavity, all surfaces of said top plate and said bottom plate being finished to commodity grade and; facing a bottom surface of said top plate and a top surface of said bottom plate with a highly polished sheet material with heat tranmissive properties, said sheet material fastened to a leading edge of said top plate and said bottom plate and adapted to be fastened to said lengthwise edge of said top plate and said bottom plate; placing a pair of side spacers made of a heat transmissive material between said top surface of said bottom plate and said bottom surface of said top plate, said side spacers at each lengthwise edge of said top plate and said bottom plate, the combination of parts forming a die; drilling fastening holes along each lengthwise edge of said die; fastening the die together utilizing the drilled holes.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said top and bottom plates and said two side die components are made of heat transmissive material selected from the group of construction grade steel and tool grade steel.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said sheets of highly polished material are made of material selected from the group of steel and steel coated with chrome.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said two side die components form a straight edge to said die cavity.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said two side die components are formed of more than one sub-component and form a side edge to the said die cavity that forms a flange in an edge of product.
- 6. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of beveling the edges of the top and bottom plates across the width on the polished sides.
- 7. A die for use in manufacturing composite material parts by pultrusion, the die comprising:
top and bottom plates, generally block-like in shape, of a heat transferring material adapted to be ground to commodity level smoothness, said plates adapted to be connected together via fastening devices; highly polished sheet material adapted to be fastened to a leading edge of said top and bottom plates, and sufficient to face a bottom surface of said top plate and a top surface of said bottom plate; a pair of side spacers adapted to be installed between said faced top and bottom plates, and inner surface of said spacers finished to a highly polished surface and remaining surfaces of said spacer finished to a commodity level.
- 8. The die of claim 7 wherein said commodity level of smoothness is no smoother than a 32 micro inch tolerance.
- 9. The die of claim 7 wherein said highly polished surface exhibits a smoothness no rougher than approximately an 8 micro inch tolerance.
- 10. The die of claim 7 wherein said die is held together by bolts arrayed along a lengthwise edge of said die.
- 11. The die of claim 7 wherein said highly polished material is held to said top and bottom plates by clamping.
- 12. The die of claim 7 wherein a heat-conducting grease is interposed between said highly polished material and said top and bottom plates.
- 13. The die of claim 7 wherein said top and bottom plates are made of construction-grade steel.
- 14. The die of claim 7 wherein said side spacers of made of tool-grade steel.
- 15. The die of claim 7 wherein said highly polished sheet material is fastened to said top and bottom plates by a method selected from the group of adhesiving, brazing, soldering and welding.
- 16. A pultrusion assembly comprising the die of claim 1 being fed by:
an aligning and feeding mechanism; and a resin bath receiving material from said aligning and feeding mechanism and feeding wetted material to said die and further comprising; distributed heaters attached to a top and bottom surface of said die for heating said die; and a pulling mechanism applying pulling force to material exiting said die.
- 17. A method of pultruding product using the die of claim 1 comprising;
supplying material to said die through an aligning and feeding mechanism and a resin bath to wet said material before it enters said die; and attaching puling mechanisms to product exiting said die.
- 18. A pultrusion die made with a material selected from the group of cast metal, ceramic and plastic components faced with polished metal sheet.
