Claims
- 1. A gas, log appliance comprising:
- a housing;
- a substantially enclosed primary combustion chamber within the housing defined by a top wall, a bottom wall and a plurality of side walls, said front wall allowing viewing of the interior of the combustion chamber from a location outside the housing;
- a burner within the primary combustion chamber;
- at least one log within the primary combustion chamber;
- a conduit supplying a combustible fluid to the burner for combustion within the primary combustion chamber;
- an inlet opening in communication with the primary combustion chamber providing an amount of room air to the primary combustion chamber insufficient for completely combusting the combustible fluid, thereby resulting in a flame comprising a yellow color and the generation of combustion products comprising carbon monoxide; and
- a secondary combustion chamber within the housing, said secondary combustion chamber being in communication with the primary combustion chamber and comprising a catalytic converter for receiving at least a portion or combustion products generated in the primary combustion and for reducing the amount of carbon monoxide in such combustion products to thereby produce a reduced carbon monoxide exhaust gas stream, wherein at least a portion of the reduced carbon monoxide exhaust gas stream is exhausted directly into the room in which the appliance is located.
- 2. An appliance as claimed in claim 1 wherein the exhaust from the primary combustion chamber comprises 2% to 10% oxygen.
- 3. An appliance as claimed in claim 1 further comprising a plenum adjacent to and in communication with the secondary combustion chamber, said plenum having an intake opening through which room air can enter the plenum and an exhaust opening through which room air and exhaust from the appliance can exit the plenum.
- 4. An appliance as claimed in claim 3 wherein the plenum extends above at least a portion of a top wall of the secondary combustion chamber.
- 5. An appliance as claimed in claim 4 wherein the plenum further extends along at least a portion of one side wall of the secondary combustion chamber.
- 6. An appliance as claimed in claim 5 wherein the plenum further extends below at least a portion of a bottom wall of the secondary combustion chamber.
- 7. An appliance as claimed in claim 1 wherein the catalytic converter is located directly above the burner.
- 8. An appliance as claimed in claim 1 wherein the exhaust from the primary combustion chamber has a temperature of at least about 200.degree. C.
- 9. An appliance as claimed in claim 1 wherein the exhaust from the primary combustion chamber has a temperature of at least about 240.degree. C.
- 10. A gas, log appliance comprising:
- a housing;
- a substantially enclosed primary combustion chamber within the housing defined by a firebox having a top wall, a bottom wall, a front wall, a rear wall and a plurality of side walls at least one wall allowing viewing of the interior of the combustion chamber from a location outside of the housing;
- a burner within the primary combustion chamber;
- at least one log within the primary combustion chamber;
- a conduit for supplying a combustible fluid to the burner for combustion within the primary combustion chamber;
- at least one inlet opening in communication with at least one of the burner and the firebox for passage of room air into the at least one of the burner and firebox to provide oxygen for combustion of combustible fluid;
- a secondary combustion chamber within the housing, said secondary combustion chamber being in communication with the primary combustion chamber and comprising a catalytic converter for receiving at least a portion of the exhaust from the primary combustion and for reducing the amount of carbon monoxide in such exhaust to thereby produce a reduced carbon monoxide exhaust gas stream, wherein at least a portion of the reduced carbon monoxide exhaust gas stream is exhausted directly into the room in which the appliance is located; and
- wherein the amount of room air that passes into the at least one of the burner and firebox is insufficient to allow complete combustion of the combustible fluid to carbon dioxide and water and thereby results in a flame comprising a yellow color and an exhaust stream comprising oxygen and heat in amounts sufficient to allow combustion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide in the secondary combustion chamber.
- 11. A gas, log appliance comprising:
- a housing;
- a substantially enclosed primary combustion chamber within the housing defined by a firebox having a top wall, a bottom wall, a plurality of side walls at least one wall allowing viewing of the interior of the combustion chamber from a location outside of the housing;
- a secondary combustion chamber within the housing in communication with the primary combustion chamber;
- a burner within the primary combustion chamber;
- at least one log within the primary combustion chamber;
- a first gas stream carrying combustible fluid into the burner;
- a second gas stream carrying oxygen into the burner for mixing with the combustible fluid, the amount of oxygen being insufficient to allow complete combustion of the combustible fluid;
- a third gas stream carrying oxygen into the primary combustion chamber in an amount sufficient to allow further, but not complete, combustion of the combustible fluid;
- a flame comprising a yellow color produced by such incomplete combustion of the combustible fluid in the primary combustion chamber;
- a fourth gas stream carrying exhaust product, to the secondary combustion chamber, said fourth gas stream, including carbon monoxide, generated by the incomplete combustion of said combustible fluid in the primary combustion chamber and an amount of oxygen sufficient to convert the carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide in the secondary combustion chamber;
- a catalytic converter in the secondary combustion chamber through which at least a portion of the fourth gas stream passes, said catalytic converter having a size and a catalytic activity sufficient to reduce the concentration of carbon monoxide in the fourth gas stream by conversion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide;
- a fifth gas stream comprising a reduced concentration of carbon monoxide passing from the secondary combustion chamber into the room in which the appliance is located.
- 12. An appliance as claimed in claim 11 wherein the secondary combustion chamber is above the primary combustion chamber.
- 13. An appliance as claimed in claim 11 further comprising a room air plenum adjacent to at least a portion of the primary combustion chamber.
- 14. An appliance as claimed in claim 13 wherein the room air plenum is also adjacent to at least a portion of the secondary combustion chamber.
- 15. An appliance as claimed in claim 14 wherein the heat transferring means comprises a metal panel separating the secondary combustion chamber and the room air plenum through which heat is exchanged.
- 16. A gas, log appliance comprising:
- a housing;
- a substantially enclosed primary combustion chamber said combustion chamber defined by a firebox having a plurality of walls, at least one wall allowing for viewing of the combustion chamber from a location outside the housing;
- at least one log within the primary combustion chamber, wherein said at least one log is visible from a location external to the housing;
- a burner within the primary combustion chamber;
- a conduit for supplying combustible fluid to the burner for combustion within the primary combustion chamber;
- at least one inlet opening in communication with at least one of the burner and the primary combustion chamber for passage of room air into the at least one of the burner and combustion chamber in insufficient quantity for complete combustion of the combustible fluid
- generating a flame comprising a yellow color, wherein the incomplete combustion generates a primary exhaust stream comprising carbon monoxide;
- a secondary combustion chamber in communication with the primary combustion chamber for receiving the primary exhaust stream;
- means within the secondary combustion chamber for reducing the amount of carbon monoxide in the primary exhaust stream and creating a secondary exhaust stream; and
- means for exhausting at least a portion of the secondary exhaust stream into the room in which the appliance is located.
- 17. An appliance as claimed in claim 16 further comprising means for reducing the temperature of at least a portion of the secondary exhaust stream before the at least a portion of the secondary exhaust stream is exhausted into the room.
- 18. An appliance as claimed in claim 17 wherein the temperature reducing means comprises a room air plenum adjacent to at least a portion of the secondary combustion chamber and means for transferring heat from the secondary exhaust stream to room air in the room air plenum.
- 19. An appliance as claimed in claim 18 wherein the heat transferring means comprises a portion of the room air plenum which receives room air and the secondary exhaust stream whereby room air mixes with at least a portion of the secondary exhaust stream, said mixing resulting in heating of the room air and cooling of the secondary exhaust stream.
- 20. A gas log appliance as recited in claim 9, 10, 11 or 16 wherein the wall allowing for viewing of the combustion chamber comprises a transparent portion which allows for said viewing.
- 21. A gas log appliance as recited in claim 20 wherein the transparent portion comprises a glass door.
- 22. A method for operating a gas, log appliance comprising:
- placing in a room a gas, log appliance comprising:
- a housing;
- a substantially enclosed primary combustion chamber within the housing, said primary combustion chamber defined by a plurality of walls, one of said walls allowing viewing of the interior of the combustion chamber from a location outside the housing;
- a secondary combustion chamber within the housing in communication with the primary combustion chamber and comprising a catalytic converter;
- a burner within the primary combustion chamber;
- at least one log within the primary combustion chamber;
- supplying a combustible fluid to the primary combustion chamber;
- supplying an amount of room air insufficient for completely combusting the combustible fluid in the primary combustion chamber, thereby creating a flame comprising a yellow color and a primary exhaust stream comprising carbon monoxide wherein said primary exhaust stream passes through the catalytic converter in the secondary combustion chamber and forms a secondary exhaust stream comprising a reduced level of carbon monoxide, at least a portion of which is exhausted into the room wherein said reduced level of carbon monoxide being such as to maintain a non-hazardous level of carbon monoxide in the room.
- 23. A method as claimed in claim 18 further comprising reducing the temperature of the secondary exhaust stream before the at least a portion of the secondary exhaust stream is exhausted into the room.
- 24. A method as recited in claim 22 wherein the wall allowing for viewing of the combustion chamber comprises a transparent portion which allows for said viewing.
- 25. A method as recited in claim 24 wherein the transparent portion comprises a glass door.
