Claims
- 1. A diesel locomotive engine comprising:
a piston having top surface and an annular sidewall including an upper rim face, said top surface including a center portion having a partially spherical shape, a cone portion adjacent to said center portion, an annular toroidal surface connected to said cone portion and defined by a toroidal major diameter and a toroidal minor radius, and a crown rim adjacent said annular toroidal surface and connected to said upper rim face of said sidewall.
- 2. An engine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said center portion has a spherical radius of about three inches.
- 3. An engine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said cone portion is formed at an angle of about 14 degrees.
- 4. An engine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said toroidal major diameter is about 0.822 inches.
- 5. An engine as set forth in claim 4 wherein said toroidal minor radius is about 0.77 inches.
- 6. An engine as set forth in claim 5 wherein said toroidal minor radius is measured form a point that is submerged about 0.496 inches below said upper rim face.
- 7. An engine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said crown rim has a radius of about 0.38 inches.
- 8. An engine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said piston defines a bowl volume of about 35.185 cubic inches.
- 9. A method of phasing a camshaft comprising:
providing the center line of the injector cam at about 48.5 degrees past top dead center;
starting the exhaust profile at about 78.5 degrees past top dead center; opening the valve at about 110 degrees past top dead center; maximizing the valve lift at about 174.5 degrees past top dead center; ending the injection profile at about 228.5 degrees past top dead center; closing the valve lift at about 238.5 degrees past top dead center; ending the exhaust profile at about 256.5 degrees past top dead center; and starting the injection profile at about 317.5 degrees past top dead center.
