Claims
- 1. A polyaldehyde having a molecular weight of about 200-3000 and the formula R.sub.1 --(O--R.sub.2 --CHO).sub.x, wherein R.sub.1 is the residue from a polyalcohol containing three to nineteen alcohol groups, R.sub.2 is a divalent organic group and x is 3 to less than 20.
- 2. The polyaldehyde of claim 1, wherein the polyalcohol is glycerol, pentaerythritol, sucrose, sorbitol, 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,2',2"-nitrilotriethanol, or N,N,N',N'-tetrakis (2-hydroxyethyl)ethylene diamine.
- 3. The polyaldehyde of claim 1, which is prepared by reacting glycerol or pentaerthyritol with N-2,2-dimethoxyethyl-N-methyl chloroacetamide to form a polyacetal and then hydrolyzing the polyacetal to the polyaldehyde.
- 4. The polyaldehyde of claim 1 which is prepared by (a) reacting (i) a polyalcohol containing at least three alcohol groups bonded to different carbon atoms and (ii) an acetal-containing reagent containing a functional group reactive with the alcohol groups to form a polyacetal having a molecular weight of about 200-3000 and (b) hydrolyzing the polyacetal to the polyaldehyde.
- 5. The polyaldehyde of claim 4, wherein the polyalcohol is trimethylolpropane, trimethylolethane, glycerol, diglycerol, 1,2,4-butanetriol, 1,2,6-hexanetriol, erythritol, D- or L-threitol, sorbitol, pentaerythritol, D-mannitol, or sucrose.
- 6. The polyaldehyde of claim 1, which is prepared by reacting glyoxal with tetra(amidoethyoxy) tetramethyl methane.
- 7. The polyaldehyde of claim 1, wherein the molecular weight of the polyaldehyde is about 250-1000.
- 8. The polyaldehyde of claim 4, wherein the molecular weight of the polyacetal is about 250-1000.
