Claims
- 1. A spindle motor for use in a disk drive comprising:
a shaft having a larger diameter section and a smaller diameter section with a step formed therebetween; a bearing sleeve having a central cylindrical opening, said shaft being inserted into said central cylindrical opening; and a bearing gap formed between said shaft and said bearing sleeve, said bearing gap being filled with lubricating fluid; wherein a first hydrodynamic thrust bearing is formed in the area of said step and wherein a hydrodynamic radial bearing is formed in the area of said larger diameter section of said shaft.
- 2. The spindle motor according to claim 1 further comprising a counter plate sealing said central cylindrical opening of said bearing sleeve, said counter plate being in an opposing relationship with said step.
- 3. The spindle motor according to claim 2, wherein said first hydrodynamic thrust bearing is formed between said step and said counter plate.
- 4. The spindle motor according to claim 3, wherein one end of said shaft is enclosed by said bearing sleeve, and wherein a second hydrodynamic thrust bearing is formed at said enclosed end of said shaft, such that said hydrodynamic radial bearing is located between said first hydrodynamic thrust bearing and said second hydrodynamic thrust bearing.
- 5. The spindle motor according to claim 4, wherein said second hydrodynamic thrust bearing is a pivot bearing.
- 6. The spindle motor according to claim 3, wherein said shaft further comprises a second smaller diameter section with a second step being formed between said second smaller diameter section and said larger diameter section, wherein a second hydrodynamic thrust bearing is formed in the area of said second step, and wherein said hydrodynamic radial bearing is located between said first hydrodynamic thrust bearing and said second hydrodynamic thrust bearing.
- 7. The spindle motor according to claim 6 further comprising a second counter plate sealing said central cylindrical opening of said bearing sleeve, said second counter plate being in an opposing relationship with said second step.
- 8. The spindle motor according to claim 7, wherein said second hydrodynamic thrust bearing is formed between said second step and said second counter plate.
- 9. The spindle motor according to claim 1, wherein a tapered capillary seal is formed at an open end of said bearing sleeve, said tapered capillary seal sealing said lubricating fluid in said bearing gap.
- 10. The spindle motor according to claim 3, wherein a tapered capillary seal is formed at an open end of said counter plate, said tapered capillary seal sealing said lubricating fluid in said bearing gap.
- 11. The spindle motor according to claim 7, wherein a second tapered capillary seal is formed at an open end of said second counter plate, said second tapered capillary seal sealing said lubricating fluid in said bearing gap.
- 12. The spindle motor according to claim 1, further comprising a base frame and a housing cover, wherein one end of said shaft is secured to the base frame while another end of said shaft is secured to the housing cover.
- 13. The spindle motor according to claim 1, wherein said shaft is a rotational component of said spindle motor.
- 14. The spindle motor according to claim 1, wherein said shaft is a stationary component of said spindle motor.
- 15. A disk drive having a spindle motor, the spindle motor comprising:
a shaft having a larger diameter section and a smaller diameter section with a step formed therebetween; a bearing sleeve having a central cylindrical opening, said shaft being inserted into said central cylindrical opening; and a bearing gap formed between said shaft and said bearing sleeve, said bearing gap being filled with lubricating fluid; wherein a first hydrodynamic thrust bearing is formed in the area of said step and wherein a hydrodynamic radial bearing is formed in the area of said larger diameter section of said shaft.
- 16. The disk drive according to claim 15 further comprising a counter plate sealing said central cylindrical opening of said bearing sleeve, said counter plate being in an opposing relationship with said step.
- 17. The disk drive according to claim 16, wherein said first hydrodynamic thrust bearing is formed between said step and said counter plate.
- 18. The disk drive according to claim 17, wherein one end of said shaft is enclosed by said bearing sleeve, and wherein a second hydrodynamic thrust bearing is formed at said enclosed end of said shaft, such that said hydrodynamic radial bearing is located between said first hydrodynamic thrust bearing and said second hydrodynamic thrust bearing.
- 19. The disk drive according to claim 18, wherein said second hydrodynamic thrust bearing is a pivot bearing.
- 20. The disk drive according to claim 17, wherein said shaft further comprises a second smaller diameter section with a second step being formed between said second smaller diameter section and said larger diameter section, wherein a second hydrodynamic thrust bearing is formed in the area of said second step, and wherein said hydrodynamic radial bearing is located between said first hydrodynamic thrust bearing and said second hydrodynamic thrust bearing.
- 21. The disk drive according to claim 20 further comprising a second counter plate sealing said central cylindrical opening of said bearing sleeve, said second counter plate being in an opposing relationship with said second step.
- 22. The disk drive according to claim 21, wherein said second hydrodynamic thrust bearing is formed between said second step and said second counter plate.
- 23. The disk drive according to claim 15, wherein a tapered capillary seal is formed at an open end of said bearing sleeve, said tapered capillary seal sealing said lubricating fluid in said bearing gap.
- 24. The disk drive according to claim 17, wherein a tapered capillary seal is formed at an open end of said counter plate, said tapered capillary seal sealing said lubricating fluid in said bearing gap.
- 25. The disk drive according to claim 21, wherein a second tapered capillary seal is formed at an open end of said second counter plate, said second tapered capillary seal sealing said lubricating fluid in said bearing gap.
- 26. The disk drive according to claim 15, further comprising a base frame and a housing cover, wherein one end of said shaft is secured to the base frame while another end of said shaft is secured to the housing cover.
- 27. The disk drive according to claim 15, wherein said shaft is a rotational component of said spindle motor.
- 28. The disk drive according to claim 15, wherein said shaft is a stationary component of said spindle motor.
