Claims
- 1. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp comprising a discharge vessel,which discharge vessel encloses, in a gastight manner, a discharge space containing a filling of mercury and an inert gas, electrodes being arranged in the discharge space for generating and maintaining a discharge in said discharge space, and an electrode shield at least substantially surrounding at least one of the electrodes, a portion of said electrode shield directly between said at least one of the electrodes and another of said electrodes, wherein, the electrode shield is made from a ceramic material.
- 2. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 1, wherein the ceramic material comprises aluminum oxide.
- 3. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 2, wherein the ceramic material comprises densely sintered aluminum oxide.
- 4. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 1, wherein the electrode shield is tubular in shape, the tubular electrode shield being disposed along a longitudinal axis substantially coincident with a longitudinal axis of the electrode.
- 5. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 1, wherein, in operation, the temperature of the electrode shield is higher than 250° C.
- 6. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp comprising a discharge vessel,which discharge vessel has a longitudinal axis and encloses a discharge space containing a filling of mercury and an inert gas in a gastight manner, electrodes being arranged on the longitudinal axis in the discharge space, for generating and maintaining a discharge in said discharge space, and an electrode shield at least substantially surrounding at least one of the electrodes in at least a plane facing another of said electrodes and transverse to the longitudinal axis of said discharge vessel, wherein, the electrode shield is made from a ceramic material which is not glass, said ceramic material comprising aluminum oxide and configured for mercury absorption at a lower rate than that of a metal shield.
- 7. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 6, wherein the ceramic material comprises densely sintered aluminum oxide.
- 8. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 6, wherein the electrode shield is tubular in shape.
- 9. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 6, wherein, in operation, the temperature of the electrode shield is higher than 250° C.
- 10. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp comprising:a discharge vessel, said discharge vessel enclosing, in a gastight manner, a discharge space containing a filling of mercury and an inert gas, a first electrode being arranged in the discharge space for generating and maintaining a discharge in said discharge space, said first electrode having a length extending substantially transverse to a longitudinal axis along which said first and second electrodes are arrayed, said first electrode having two ends, a first side facing a second electrode, a second side facing away from said second electrode, and third and fourth sides parallel to the length of said first electrode and at substantially right angles to said first and second sides, and an electrode shield at least substantially surrounding said first electrode on said first side, wherein, the electrode shield is made from a ceramic material which is not glass.
- 11. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 10, wherein the ceramic material comprises aluminum oxide.
- 12. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 10, wherein the ceramic material comprises densely sintered aluminum oxide.
- 13. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 10, wherein, in operation, the temperature of the electrode shield is higher than 250° C.
- 14. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 10, wherein the only opening on the first, second, third and fourth sides of the electrode shield is a slit along the length of the first side of said first electrode.
- 15. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 14, wherein the slit along the length of the first side of said first electrode has a width of at least, substantially 1 mm.
- 16. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp as claimed in claim 10, wherein the electrode shield is tubular in shape.
- 17. A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp comprising a discharge vessel,which discharge vessel encloses, in a gastight manner, a discharge space containing a filling of mercury and an inert gas, electrodes being arranged in the discharge space for generating and maintaining a discharge in said discharge space, and an electrode shield at least substantially surrounding at least one of the electrodes on all sides, except for sides on which current supply conductors are attached to said at least one of the electrodes, wherein, the electrode shield is made from a ceramic material.
