Claims
- 1. A composition that is moldable at pressures below about 100 psi, said composition being made by combining:
- (A) an unsaturated prepolymer resin, wherein the unsaturated prepolymer resin is an unsaturated polyester resin or a vinyl ester resin;
- (B) a monomeric unsaturated polymerizable material containing a terminal ethylene group;
- (C) a hydroxy-terminated polyester having a molecular weight in the range of about 500 to about 3000;
- (D) a polyisocyanate; and
- (E) a polymerization initiator containing an azo group; said composition being characterized by a mole ratio of NCO groups from (D) to OH groups from (C) in the range of about 0.1 to about 10.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said composition further comprises a polymerization accelerator.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein said composition further comprises a polymerization inhibitor.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein said composition further comprises at least one of a mold release agent and a filler.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein said composition further comprises at least one of a thermoplastic polymeric material, an elastomeric polymeric material, a shrink control agent, a wetting agent, an antifoam agent and a thickener.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein said composition further comprises a fibrous reinforcing material.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein (A) is an unsaturated polyester resin.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein (A) is the reaction product of dibasic acid or anhydride with a dihydroxy or trihydroxy compound; said dibasic acid or anhydride being selected from the group consisting of maleic acid or anhydride, fumaric acid, itaconic acid, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, adipic acid, succinic acid, phthalic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid and tetrachlorophthalic acid or anhydride; said dihydroxy and trihydroxy compounds being selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1,2-butanediol, 1,3-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol, diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, glycerol and neopentyl glycol.
- 9. The composition of claim 1 wherein (A) is the reaction product of a dibasic acid or anhydride with the reaction product of an alkylene oxide with 2,2'-bis(4-hydroxyphenylene)propane.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein (A) is a vinyl ester resin.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 wherein (B) is selected from the group consisting of styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, chlorostyrene, vinyl toluene, divinyl benzene, dialkylphthalate, methyl methacrylate, and mixtures of two or more thereof.
- 12. The composition of claim 1 wherein (C) is a hydroxy terminated polyester having a molecular weight in the range of about 500 to about 3000 and a functionality of 2 to about 4 hydroxyl groups per molecule.
- 13. The composition of claim 1 wherein (D) is selected from the group consisting of 2,4-toluene diisocyanate; 2,6-toluene diisocyanate; m-phenylene diisocyanate; p-phenylene diisocyanate; 1,5-naphthalene diisocyanate; 4,4'-diphenyl ether diisocyanate; 4,4',4"-triphenylmethane triisocyanate; 2,4,4'-triisocyanatodiphenylmethane; 2,2',4-triisocyanato diphenyl; 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate; 4,4'-benzophenone diisocyanate; 2,2-bis(4-isocyanatophenyl)propane; 1,4-naphthalene diisocyanate; 4-methoxy-1,3-phenylene diisocyanate; 4-chloro-1,3-phenylenediisocyanate; 4-bromo-1,3-phenylene diisocyanate; 4-ethoxy-1,3-phenylene diisocyanate; 2,4'-diisocyanatodiphenyl ether; 4,4'-diisocyanatodiphenyl; 9,10-anthracene diisocyanate; 4,6-dimethyl-1,3-phenylene diisocyanate; 4,4'-diisocyanatodibenzyl; 3,3'-dimethyl-4,4'-diisocyanatodiphenylmethane; 3,3'-dimethyl-4,4'-diisocyanatodiphenyl; 3,3'-dimethoxy-4,4'-diisocyanatodiphenyl; 1,8-naphthalene diisocyanate; 2,4,6-toluene triisocyanate; 2,4,4'-triisocyanatodiphenyl ether; diphenylmethane diisocyanate available under the trademarks Mondur and Papi, having a functionality of 2.1 to 2.7; 1,3-xylene 4,6-diisocyanate; aromatic isocyanate-terminated polyurethanes; aromatic isocyanate-terminated prepolymers of polyesters; 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate; ethylene diisocyanate; propylene 1,2-diisocyanate; butylene 1,2-diisocyanate; butylene 2,3-diisocyanate; pentamethylene diisocyanate; cyclopentylene 1,3-diisocyanate; cyclohexylene 1,2-diisocyanate; cyclohexylene 1,3-diisocyanate; cyclohexylene 1,4-diisocyanate; 1,10-decamethylene diisocyanate; diisocyanato dicyclohexyl methane; 1,5-diisocyanato-2,2-dimethyl pentane; hydrogenated 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate; hydrogenated toluene diisocyanate; (OCNCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.2 S; (OCNCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.2 O; OCNCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH(OCH.sub.3)CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NCO; OCNCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O(CH.sub.2).sub.4 OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NCO; ##STR3##
- 14. The composition of claim 1 wherein (D) comprises: (D-1) urethane modified diphenylmethane diisocyanate; and
- (D-2) polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate.
- 15. The composition of claim 1 wherein (E) is selected from the group consisting of azobisisobutyronitrile and t-butylazoisobutyronitrile.
- 16. The composition of claim 1 wherein said composition further comprises an organo tin compound.
- 17. The composition of claim 1 wherein said composition further comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol, hydroquinone, tertiary butyl catechol and methyl ether of hydroquinone.
- 18. A composition that is moldable at pressures below about 100 psi, said composition being made by combining: an unsaturated polyester resin having an acid number in the range of zero to about 5; styrene monomer; a hydroxy terminated polyester having a molecular weight in the range of about 500 to about 3000; urethane modified diphenylmethane diisocyanate; polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate; azobisisobutyronitrile; dibutyl tin dilaurate; 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol; zinc stearate; calcium carbonate; and fiberglass; said composition being characterized by a mole ratio of NCO groups from said diisocyanate to OH groups from said hydroxy terminated polyester in the range of about 0.1 to about 10.
- 19. A method of molding comprising the step of:
- molding a composition at pressures below about 100 psi, said composition made by combining:
- (A) an unsaturated prepolymer resin, wherein the unsaturated prepolymer resin is an unsaturated polyester resin or a vinyl ester resin;
- (B) a monomeric unsaturated polymerizable material containing a terminal ethylene group;
- (C) a hydroxy-terminated polyester having a molecular weight in the range of about 500 to about 3000;
- (D) a polyisocyanate; and
- (E) a polymerization initiator containing an azo group; said composition being characterized by a mole ratio of NCO groups from (D) to OH groups from (C) in the range of about 0.1 to about 10.
