Claims
- 1. A hardwood flooring product made according to a method comprising the steps of:
- (a) processing a strip of raw wood into a blank having a predetermined thickness and width defined by top and bottom surfaces and opposing side edge surfaces which reside in parallel planes relative to each other;
- (b) planing said top and bottom surfaces of said blank;
- (c) planing said side edge surfaces of the blank;
- (d) splitting the blank along the width of the blank from one side to the other to form two low profile flooring strips having the same width as the blank and a thickness less than one-half the thickness of the blank;
- (e) molding interlocking tongue and grooves into first and second longitudinally-extending side edges of the flooring strips for securing together like flooring strips placed side-to-side to form a floor, said tongue and grooves formed perpendicular to and adjacent the top and bottom side edge surfaces; and
- (f) performing the steps of (b), (c), (d) and (e), said steps comprising sequential automatic steps without intermediate handling to thereby provide enhanced dimensional tolerances to the flooring strip.
- 2. A hardwood flooring product according to claim 1, wherein the top and bottom side edge surfaces of each flooring strip are equally spaced from a tip of said tongue such that pressure applied by one flooring strip on an adjacent like flooring strip placed side-to-side is equally distributed over a profile of the like flooring strip for allowing said flooring product to resist cupping.
- 3. A hardwood flooring product according to claim 1, wherein the bottom surface of each flooring strip includes a single nailing recess extending in parallel relation to a lengthwise dimension of the flooring strip.
- 4. A hardwood flooring product according to claim 1, wherein the nailing recess defines a relatively small semi-circular groove.
- 5. A method of producing a hardwood flooring product, comprising the steps of:
- (a) processing a strip of raw wood into a blank having a predetermined thickness and width defined by top and bottom surfaces and opposing side edge surfaces which reside in parallel planes relative to each other;
- (b) planing the top and bottom surfaces of the blank;
- (c) planing the side edge surfaces of the blank;
- (d) splitting the blank along the width of the blank from one side to the other to form two low profile flooring strips having the same width as the blank and a thickness less than one-half the thickness of the blank;
- (e) performing steps (b), (c) and (d) sequentially and automatically without intermediate handling to thereby provide enhanced dimensional tolerances to the flooring strip.
- 6. A method of producing a hardwood flooring product according to claim 5, and including the step of molding interlocking tongue and grooves into first and second longitudinally-extending side edges of the flooring strips for securing together like flooring strips placed side-to-side to form a floor.
- 7. A method of producing a hardwood flooring product according to claim 6, and including forming top and bottom side edge surfaces perpendicular to and adjacent the tongue.
- 8. A method of producing a hardwood flooring product according to claim 7, and comprising forming the top and bottom side edge surfaces an equally spaced distance from a tip of the tongue, such that pressure applied by one flooring strip on an adjacent like flooring strip placed side-to-side is equally distributed over a profile of the like flooring strip to resist cupping of the strips.
- 9. A method of producing a hardwood flooring product according to claim 5, and comprising forming a single nailing recess in the bottom surface of the flooring strip, the recess extending in parallel relation to a lengthwise dimension of the flooring strip.
- 10. A method of producing a hardwood flooring product according to claim 9, wherein the nailing recess defines a relatively small semi-circular groove.
