Claims
- 1. A process for producing methanol by a low temperature reaction which comprises reacting CO with H.sub.2 to form CH.sub.3 OH in the presence of a catalyst comprising a hydridic hydrogenating agent of the type NaH--RONa--M(OAc).sub.2 where M is selected from the group consisting of Ni, Pd and Co and R is a lower alkyl group containing from 1-6 carbon atoms in the form of a slurry.
- 2. The process of claim wherein the catalyst is reused.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein said catalyst is a hydrogenating agent which is a basic complex reaction product of an alkali metal hydride, alcoholate, and a heavy metal salt, wherein the heavy metal component of said salt is selected from the group consisting of Ni, Pd, and Co and wherein the alkyl fraction of the alcoholate is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 hydrocarbon.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein the alkyl fraction is tertiary amyl.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the process is conducted at a temperature of about 80.degree.-120.degree. C. and at a pressure of 50-1000 psi of syngas.
- 6. The process of claim wherein the process is carried out as a batch process commencing at about 300 psi and completing at about 50 psi in a retrograde or descending pressure operation.
- 7. The process of claim wherein the catalyst is the complex derived from NaH-tertiary amyl--ONa--Ni(OAc).sub.2.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein the process is operated continuously by injecting a CO/H.sub.2 gas stream during the process.
