Claims
- 1. A composition comprising the combination of:
- (A) at least one sulfur compound characterized by the structural formula ##STR15## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are each independently H or a hydrocarbyl group, or
- R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 is G.sup.1 or G.sup.2, or
- R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, or R.sup.3 and R.sup.4, together are an alkylene group containing about 4 to about 7 carbon atoms;
- G.sup.1 and G.sup.2 are each independently COOR, C N [C.dbd.N], R.sup.5 --C.dbd.NR.sup.6, CON(R).sub.2, or NO.sub.2, R.sup.5 and each R are independently H or a hydrocarbyl group, and R.sup.6 is H or a hydrocarbyl group, or G.sup.1 is CH.sub.2 OH:
- when both G.sup.1 and G.sup.2 are R.sup.5 C.dbd.NR.sup.6 [R.sup.5 C--NR.sup.6 ], the two R.sup.6 groups together may be a hydrocarbylene group linking the two nitrogen atoms;
- when G.sup.1 is CH.sub.2 OH and G.sup.2 is COOR, a lactone may be formed by intramolecular condensation of G.sup.1 and G.sup.2 ; and
- x is an integer from 1 to about 8; and
- (B) at least one carboxylic dispersant composition prepared by the reaction of
- (B-1) at least one boron compound selected from the class consisting of boron tiroxide, boron halides, boron acids, boron anhydrides, boron amides and esters of boron acids with
- (B-2) at least one soluble acylated nitrogen intermediate prepared by the reaction of a hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid-producing compound with at least about one-half equivalent, per equivalent of acid producing compound, of an amine containing at least one hydrogen attached to a nitrogen atom.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the succinic acid-producing compound of (B-2) contains an average of at least about 50 aliphatic carbon atoms in the substituent.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the hydrocarbon substituent of the succinic acid-producing compound of (B-2) is derived from a polyolefin having an Mn value within the range of from about 700 to about 10,000.
- 4. The composition of claim 3 wherein the polyolefin is a polyisobutene.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amine of (B-2) is characterized by the formula
- R.sub.1 R.sub.2 NH
- wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently hydrogen, or hydrocarbon, amino-substituted hydrocarbon, hydroxy-substituted hydrocarbon, alkoxy-substituted hydrocarbon, amino, carbamyl, thiocarbamyl, guanyl, and acylimidoyl groups, provided that only one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 may be hydrogen.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amine of (B-2) is a polyamine.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amine of-(B-2) is an alkylene polyamine.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amine of (B-2) is a hydroxyalkyl-substituted alkylene polyamine.
- 9. The composition of claim 1 wherein the boron compound of (B-1) is boric acid.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amount of (B-1) and (B-2) present is an amount to provide from about 0.1 atomic proportion of boron for each mole of said acylated nitrogen intermediate to about 10 atomic proportions of boron for each atomic proportion of nitrogen of said acylated nitrogen intermediate.
- 11. An additive concentrate for use in lubricants or functional fluids comprising a substantially inert solvent/diluent and from about 30-90% of at least one composition of claim 1.
- 12. A lubricant or functional fluid composition comprising a major amount of at least one oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount of at least one composition of claim 1.
- 13. The composition of claim 12 wherein the lubricant or functional fluid is a grease.
- 14. An aqueous system comprising at least about 40% of water and at least one composition of claim 1.
- 15. The composition of claim 1 wherein x is an integer from 1 to about 4.
- 16. The composition of claim 1 wherein G.sup.1 and G.sup.2 are identical.
- 17. The composition of claim 1 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 are H or hydrocarbyl groups.
- 18. The composition of claim 1 wherein R.sup.2 and R.sup.4 are hydrogen or hydrocarbyl groups.
- 19. The composition of claim 1 wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are H or lower hydrocarbyl groups containing from 1 to about 7 carbon atoms.
- 20. The composition of claim 1 wherein the succinic acid-producing compound of (B-2) is selected from the group consisting of succinic acids, anhydrides, esters and halides.
- 21. The composition of claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of A:B is from about 0.1:1 to about 10:0.
- 22. The composition of claim 1 wherein R.sup.2 and R.sup.4 are hydrogen or hydrocarbyl groups and R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 are COOR groups.
- 23. An additive concentrate for use in lubricants or functional fluids comprising a substantially inert solvent/diluent and from about 30-90% of at least one composition of claim 22.
- 24. A lubricant or functional fluid composition comprising a major amount of at least one oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount of at least one composition of claim 22.
- 25. The composition of claim 24 wherein the lubricant or functional fluid is a grease.
- 26. An aqueous system comprising at least about 40% of water and at least one composition of claim 22.
