Claims
- 1. A dry sump lubrication system for an outboard motor having a power head containing an internal combustion engine having an output shaft journaled for rotation in a crank case chamber about a vertically extending axis, a drive shaft housing and lower unit depending from said power head and containing a vertically extending drive shaft driven by said engine output shaft and a propulsion unit for propelling an associated watercraft and driven by said drive shaft, said outboard motor being supported for pivotal movement about a horizontally extending tilt axis disposed at the lower forward edge of said power head, a dry sump tank for containing lubricant disposed forwardly of the engine output shaft and between said engine output shaft and said tilt axis, a horizontally disposed pump shaft driven by said engine output shaft, a scavenge pump driven by said pump shaft for drawing lubricant to said dry sump tank from an inlet in said engine disposed so as to be positioned above said scavenge pump when said outboard motor is tilted up about said tilt axis, and a pressure pump driven by said pump shaft for delivering lubricant from said dry sump tank to said engine for its lubrication.
- 2. A dry sump lubrication system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the scavenge pump and pressure pump have their pumping elements rotating about a common axis.
- 3. A dry sump lubrication system as set forth in claim 2 wherein the scavenge pump and pressure pump comprise gerotor type pumps.
- 4. A dry sump lubrication system as set forth in claim 3 wherein the dry sump tank is contained within a protective cowling of the power head and is positioned adjacent the engine.
- 5. A dry sump lubrication system as set forth in claim 16 wherein the dry sump tank is provided with a lubricant inlet that receives lubricant from the scavenge pump and a lubricant outlet that delivers lubricant to the pressure pump and including screen mean disposed at a low level in said dry sump tank between said inlet and said outlet for separating air from the lubricant.
- 6. A dry sump lubrication system for an outboard motor as set forth in claim 1 wherein the power head further includes a protective cowling comprised of a lower tray portion and an upper cover portion detachably connected to each other around a mating flange, an oil filter carried by said engine and disposed in the path of lubricant flowing from said pressure pump, said oil filter being positioned above said mating flange for removal of said oil filter upon removal of said top cover portion.
- 7. A dry sump lubrication system for an outboard motor having a power head containing an internal combustion engine having an output shaft journaled for rotation in a crank case chamber, a drive shaft housing and lower unit depending from said power head and containing a drive shaft driven by said engine output shaft and a propulsion unit for propelling an associated watercraft and driven by said drive shaft, a dry sump tank for containing lubricant, a scavenge pump for drawing lubricant from said crank case chamber and returning said lubricant said dry sump tank through an inlet opening, a pressure pump for drawing lubricant from said dry sump tank through a lubricant outlet and delivering lubricant under pressure to said engine for its lubricant, and screen means positioned within said dry sump tank at a low level therein and between said lubricant inlet and said lubricant outlet for removing air from the lubricant.
- 8. A dry sump lubrication system as set forth in claim 7 wherein the dry sump tank is contained within a protective cowling of the power head and is positioned adjacent the engine.
- 9. An outboard motor having a power head comprised of a lower tray portion and an upper cover portion detachably affixed to each other around a mating flange, a drive shaft housing and lower unit depending from said power head and carrying propulsion means for propelling an associated watercraft, an internal combustion engine having a cylinder block and mounted in said protective cowling, said internal combustion engine having a lubricating system comprised of a lubricant pump driven by said engine for circulating lubricant under pressure to said engine for its lubrication, an oil filter detachably affixed to said engine cylinder block and in the flow circuit from said oil pump for filtering lubricant supplied to said engine, said oil filter being positioned above said lower tray portion for removal and replacement thereof through removal of the cover portion.
