Claims
- 1. The method which comprises forming a reaction mixture containing (i) a graft polymer, having a carbon-carbon backbone polymer containing residual unsaturation bearing graft moieties derived from a graft monomer containing ethylenic unsaturation and an epoxide moiety, and (ii) a Mannich base formed by the reaction of an aldehyde, a primary or secondary amine, and a hindered phenol;
- maintaining said reaction mixture at coupling reaction conditions thereby effecting coupling of said Mannich base through a nitrogen atom to an opened epoxide moiety of said graft monomer on said carbon-carbon backbone polymer; and
- recovering said product polymer wherein said Mannich base is joined through a nitrogen atom to an opened epoxide moiety of said graft monomer on said carbon-carbon backbone polymer.
- 2. A composition comprising a carbon-carbon backbone polymer containing residual unsaturation bearing graft moieties derived from a graft monomer containing ethylenic unsaturation and an epoxide moiety, and bonded to at least one of said graft moieties through an opened epoxide moiety, a Mannich base formed by the reaction of an aldehyde, a primary or secondary amine, and a hindered phenol.
- 3. The method which comprises forming a reaction mixture containing (i) a Mannich base formed by reacting an aldehyde, a primary or secondary amine, and a hindered phenol containing an active hydrogen atom, and (ii) a graft polymer, having a carbon-carbon backbone polymer containing residual unsaturation, bearing graft moieties derived from a graft monomer containing ethylenic unsaturation and an epoxide moiety, and (iii) a primary or secondary coupling amine;
- maintaining said reaction mixture at coupling reaction conditions thereby effecting coupling of said Mannich base and said coupling amine with said graft polymer and forming product polymer wherein said coupling amine and said Mannich base are each joined through a nitrogen atom to opened epoxide moieties of said graft monomer on said carbon-carbon backbone polymer; and
- recovering said product polymer wherein said coupling amine and said Mannich base are joined through a nitrogen atom to the opened epoxide moieties of said graft monomer on said carbon-carbon backbone polymer.
- 4. The method claimed in claim 3 wherein said polymer is a copolymer of ethylene-propylene or a terpolymer of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer.
- 5. The method claimed in claim 3 wherein said phenol is characterized by the formula: ##STR19## wherein R* is a hydrocarbon group bonded to the ring through a carbon atom which is bonded only to other carbon atoms.
- 6. The method claimed in claim 3 wherein said amine is N-(beta-aminoethyl) piperazine.
- 7. The method claimed in claim 3 wherein said coupling amine is morpholine.
- 8. The method claimed in claim 3 wherein said graft monomer is characterized by the formula ##STR20## wherein C.dbd.C is an ethylenically unsaturated double bond;
- R.sup.v or R.sup.vi is a divalent hydrocarbon moiety selected from the group consisting of alkylene, alkarylene, aralkylene, cycloalkylene, and arylene;
- R' is hydrogen or alkyl, alkaryl, aralkyl, or cycloalkyl,
- R" is a divalent moiety selected from the group consisting of --COO-- and --R.sup.v --; and
- a is an integer greater than 0;
- b is an integer 0-1;
- c is an integer 1-3; and
- d is an integer 0-1.
- 9. The method claimed in claim 3 wherein said graft monomer is allyl glycidyl ether.
- 10. The method claimed in claim 3 wherein said graft monomer is glycidyl methacrylate.
- 11. A composition comprising a carbon-carbon backbone polymer containing residual unsaturation bearing graft moieties derived from a graft monomer containing ethylenic unsaturation and an epoxide moiety, and bonded to at least one of said graft moieties through an opened epoxide moiety, a primary or secondary coupling amine and bonded to at least one of said graft moieties through an opened epoxide moiety a Mannich base formed by the reaction of an aldehyde, a primary or secondary amine, and a hindered phenol.
- 12. A composition as claimed in claim 11 wherein said carbon-carbon backbone polymer is a copolymer of ethylene-propylene or a terpolymer of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer.
- 13. A composition as claimed in claim 11 wherein said phenol is characterized by the formula: ##STR21## wherein R* is a hydrocarbon group bonded to the ring through a carbon atom which is bonded only to other carbon atoms.
- 14. A composition as claimed in claim 11 wherein said R* is tertiary butyl.
- 15. A composition as claimed in claim 11 wherein said amine is N-(beta-aminoethyl) piperazine.
- 16. A composition as claimed in claim 11 wherein said coupling amine is morpholine.
- 17. A composition as claimed in claim 11 wherein said graft monomer is characterized by the formula ##STR22## wherein C.dbd.C is an ethylenically unsaturated double bond;
- R.sup.v or R.sup.vi is a divalent hydrocarbon moiety selected from the group consisting of alkylene, alkarylene, aralkylene, cycloalkylene, and arylene;
- R' is hydrogen or alkyl, alkaryl, aralkyl, or cycloalkyl,
- R" is a divalent moiety selected from the group consisting of --COO-- and --R.sup.v --; and
- a is an integer greater than 0;
- b is an integer 0-1;
- c is an integer 1-3; and
- d is an integer 0-1.
- 18. A composition as claimed in claim 11 wherein said graft monomer is allyl glycidyl ether.
- 19. A composition as claimed in claim 11 wherein said graft monomer is glycidyl methacrylate.
- 20. A composition comprising a copolymer of ethylene-propylene or of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer bearing graft moieties derived from allyl glycidyl ether or glycidyl methacrylate and bonded to at least one of said graft moieties through an opened epoxide moiety, morpholine, and bonded to at least one of said graft moieties through an opened epoxide moiety a Mannich base formed by the reaction of a formaldehyde, N-(beta-aminoethyl) piperazine, and a hindered phenol containing an active hydrogen atom.
- 21. A composition as claimed in claim 11 wherein said hindered phenol is 2,6-di-t-butyl phenol.
- 22. A concentrate comprising an inert diluent-solvent and a composition comprising a copolymer of ethylene-propylene or of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer bearing graft moieties derived from allyl glycidyl ether or glycidyl methacrylate and bonded to at least one of said graft moieties through an opened epoxide moiety, morpholine, and bonded to at least one of said graft moieties through an opened epoxide moiety a Mannich base formed by the reaction of formaldehyde, N-(beta-aminoethyl) piperazine, and a hindered phenol containing an active hydrogen atom.
- 23. The method claimed in claim 5 wherein said phenol is 2,6-di-tertiary alkyl phenol.
- 24. The method claimed in claim 5 wherein said phenol is 2,6-di-t-butyl phenol.
- 25. A composition as claimed in claim 11 wherein said phenol is 2,6-di-tertiary alkyl phenol.
