Claims
- 1. A catheter comprising a flexible elongate shaft having a distal end and a proximal end, the catheter comprising:a polymeric elongate member; and an external coating on a distal section of said polymeric elongate member, the external coating comprising a first layer of a polymer or oligomer cross-linked to said polymeric elongate member and a second layer of a polymer or oligomer cross-linked to said first layer.
- 2. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the polymer or oligomer is comprised of monomers selected from ethylene oxide; 2-vinyl pyridine; N-vinylpyrrolidone; polyethylene glycol acrylates such as mono-alkoxy polyethylene glycol mono(meth) acrylates, including mono-methoxy triethylene glycol mono (meth) acrylate, mono-meth oxy tetraethylene glycol mono (meth) acrylate, polyethylene glycol mono (meth) acrylate; other hydrophilic acrylates such as 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate, glycerylmethacrylate; acrylic acid and its salts; acrylamide and acrylonitrile; acrylamidomethylpropane sulfonic acid and its salts, cellulose, cellulose derivatives such as methyl cellulose ethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, cyanoethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, polysaccharides such as amylose, pectin, amylopectin, alginic acid, and crosslinked heparin.
- 3. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the first layer is cross-linked to the polymeric elongate member by the application of ultraviolet radiation.
- 4. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the second layer is cross-linked to the first layer by the application of ultraviolet radiation.
- 5. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the external coating is hydrophilic.
- 6. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the flexible elongate shaft varies in stiffness, having a proximal portion of a relatively high stiffness and a distal portion of a relatively low stiffness, with an intermediate portion having a stiffness between that of the proximal portion and that of the distal portion.
- 7. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the flexible elongate shaft includes a braided support member.
- 8. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the polymeric elongate member is comprised of a material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane, a block copolymer of polyamide, silicone, Nylon, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terepthalate, polyester elastomer tubing, a polymer outer core with a metallic mesh inner core, and laminates thereof.
- 9. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the polymeric elongate member is doped with a radiopaque metallic material.
